Another awesome video Shane, thank you. I was scratching my head to figure out what I was going to do about a 3 way in my kitchen and viola there was you video. Man I love the look of that Wemo switch, and I personally like the little light ring to help me find that switch in the dark. I have some Meross switches that are the opposite, the little courtesy light turns ON when you turn the light ON. I guess it's personal preference, and they were $50 for three. I had a cluster of Neutral wires I did not want to unravel, so in one location I opted for the Lutron Caseta Dimmer that you mentioned that does not require a Neutral, and it came with a Pico Remote I used in the other location, and I just eliminated that switch altogether. Looking forward to watching you HomeKit Series.

Nice! I use the Aqara relay to do this.
Brazil's power grid uses two voltages variants. 127V 60hz and 220v 60hz. Also, our wall box is the same as in the USA. 4x2.
So as I live in the 220v 60hz part with a 4x2 box. Is quite difficult to find 4x2 220v.
In the past, I found some smart plugs sold by Wemo in the US which specs were only for 110v but works everywhere. 5 years and it didn't catch fire yet.
The only catch with Aqara relays is the noise.

Hey Shane, would you consider doing a video on using the "Bond Bridge" + Hoobs/Homebridge to add non-smart devices to Homekit? The Bond Bridge is basically a gizmo that lets you record and playback wireless remote signals to your whole house - so you can use it to control things like "dumb" ceiling fans or anything else that uses an RF remote. It doesn't directly have homekit support but there is a hoobs/homebridge module for it.

Do they have any temperature range issues? We have three way switches in our garage in Michigan, it’s not heated per se (dryer vents into garage so so w heat is added by that when it’s running) but otherwise it gets cold in there. Getting an EV so being able to turn on and off the lights from the car or via scenes would help when. plugging/unplugging.

Help. I’ve been installing Meross single and 3 way switches. So far 100% success rate with the single pole. About 50% success rate with 3 way. The problem is with wiring. One gang box had pretty straight forward looking sets of wires and I was able to follow the diagram in the instructions fairly easily. Both switches worked fine and the lights functioned as intended. My stairwell switches were an entirely different story. Again, I followed the diagram, but no luck. I’m thinking there were wires I should have or not have used that I missed? Maybe different circuit running through the gang box? Neutral wire issues? Is there a fool proof way to troubleshoot or specific issues I should be looking out for when it comes to wiring?

Aqara switches connect via zigbee to their hub, but last I checked they are not 3 way compatible.

Starting with the 2011 National Electrical Code (NEC), neutral wires have been required at almost every switch point. Exceptions occur when it's very easy to run a neutral wire later, such as when a wall is unfinished on one side. My house was built in 2007. As far as I know, I have only one switch point without a neutral.
This video is timely for me. I've been exploring how to make the light at the bottom of my basement steps smart, and this looks like a good option. So far, everything I have is Lutron Caseta. But for the dark stairway, I want a paddle-style switch that I can hit with my wrist or elbow when my arms are full.

Not sure if I missed this in the video, but if you turn on the switch in HomeKit, it shows as ON. What if you turn off the light with one of the other “normal” switches. Does HomeKit update to show the light is actually off? Even though you didn’t use the Wemo switch to turn it off?

Smart switches and smart bulbs generally don't play well together. I always choose one or the other (smart switches when there is a switch and smart bulbs when there is no wall switch).
However, if you do have Hue bulbs and a wall switch, I'd take a look at the Lutron Aurora. It works with Hue bulbs and allows you to still use the wall switch.

You can do this same thing with Lutron Caseta switches, only having to replace one switch in a 3 way setup. Checkout their Advanced Installation Guide online. I’ve done this with a Caseta Smart switch paired with a toggle switch as part of a 3 way setup. You do have to slightly modify the other switch in the setup, but it can be done. Not sure about a 4 way setup though.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Interesting, I didn't realize that. I'm guessing this only works with certain Caseta switches, just the ON/OFF switches or the Pro dimmers? Looks like it's not too hard to do even though you do have to modify the other switch. I bet the 4 way could get confusing if it's even possible. Thanks for sharing!

The Wemo switch looks very attractive for a four-way light switch that I have, but for two things. It being a WiFi solution and not Thread capable AND all of my other switches are Lutron Caseta switches. I just don't understand why Lutron can't come up with a solution like this. I know you can use one Lutron Caseta switch with two Pico remote; but I refuse to use the Pico remotes. I want a WIRED solution. If the LAN goes down or I have issues with the Lutron hub, then the Pico remotes will not work. I want to be able to manually control the switches from the wall if necessary regardless of the status of the hub or LAN status. I'm just weird that way. I want Lutron to come out with a solution like Wemo has done for a 4-way switch. The way they do the wiring on their 3-way switch makes it very difficult to have multiple wired manual switches with a four-way in the middle. I have been told that there is a way to get around this but Lutron does not support it, but I have yet to find a wiring diagram showing how this can be accomplished.
Ugh!!!! Anyway, thanks for another great review. If Wemo comes out with a Thread version of this switch, I will jump on it.

I used Lutron Caseta Pro 1000W Dimmer White (PD-10NXD-WH) switch for a 3-way application I had in my house on a ceiling fan. I used a Lutron Claro 3-way paddle switch for the other side of the three-way light switch.
I used the Lutron Caseta Fan Switch (PD-FSQN-WH) for the fan part. The fan was on a single switch and didn't need a 3-way solution, just the light.

I went all in with wemo products in my house and regretted it. WiFi based switches get hot and fail over time also they use a lot of power if you blanket your house with them. I had endless reliability issues with mine. I thought it was my router so I swapped over to WiFi 6 mesh Orbi setup and with the MASSIVE headache of putting them all in HomeKit again, it didn’t fix my problem. I tore them all out and switched to Lutron and never looked back. I love the Lutron switches and they make a 3 way neutral switch that works flawlessly. Speaking of flawless, it’s been 5 months and not a single issue, not one! When people ask me about smart switches I tell them to stay away from the WiFi ones.

Sorry to hear about your frustrations, but I'm glad you got everything working well now. As I mentioned in the video, that's one reason why I wouldn't want to cover my whole house with wifi switches... if you ever have to remove and re-add them to homekit for some reason... that would be nightmare. Definitely benefits to having a bridge in some cases. And you definitely can't go wrong with Lutron Caseta. Thanks for sharing!

Same experience with me. I installed 20+ Wemos a year ago. They kept falling off wi-fi or needed resetting, tripped GFCI circuit breakers at random times. Gave up after 6 months of hassle, replaced them all with Lutron Caseta. Not one problem ever since. They just work. Anybody need a bunch of like-new Wemos, cheap?

Wont go wemo. Trying to get out of their environment. So inconsistent and issues left and right. Wishing you luck with them.

The only way to open curtains that I've tried is with the Switchbot curtain. But it doesn't natively support HomeKit at this time. I integrated it into homekit via homebridge.

This is nothing for me. Only my lights are integrated in HomeKit, not my sensors and switches. I don’t see the point… 😏

You killing me, three way switches never work when you turn off one of the other switches and you didn’t show that here
