That extra "high compression" is really noticeable when you see how it jumps out of the hole and gets on plane in seconds. Nice top end also. You never disappoint, nice job!
That high compression is noticeable when starting thus motor after starting a different one too. This one definitely requires more effort to pull through compression. When it's warm, all it takes is one bump over and it's running though. It's a very strong runner and very enjoyable to run. Thanks for watching!
So far, this motor has been perfectly fine with the high compression. I still want to try some 110LL in it to see if I get any benefits, but it keeps pulling all the way to max advance without falling off and the plugs look good, so it seems to be fine running Rec90. It runs at about 165F now that I have soldered the hole in the water tube and it is getting full flow to the powerhead. Everything seems happy and I plan to run it pretty regularly again this season. Good luck with your motor with the 25hp cylinder head and thanks for watching!
This is one of the strongest 18s I have and one of my favorite to run. It basically equals thee performance of the later 20hp motors. The 22c.i 25hp will still outperform it on the top end, but this one idles perfectly. The 25s, in my experience, will tend to load up if they idle for extended periods. This one doesn't seem to mind. Thanks for watching!
I bet they would push a 10' dinghy along very well. Too bad about the salt water. It definitely takes a toll on outboards. Thankfully I am in freshwater country here in the Great Lakes region of the USA. Thanks for watching!
Good Sunday afternoon Ben! 12:10 Iowa time. Definitely another strong runner! Did I hear that it has a 25 HP power head on it now or did I misunderstand. Either way it went right across the lake and back! A tiny bit of rain early this morning here and the sun is out again for now! Enjoy the rest of your Holiday weekend there! I am here! Mark in Iowa.
Hi Mark! This powerhead is still all original 18hp except the cylinder head. The original had both plug holes stripped out and I had a good cylinder head from a '69 Evinrude 25hp on the parts shelf. I checked everything for fit and it all cleared so I put her together. The compression went from about 110 to about 155psi. It has a very crisp throttle response, idle, and exhaust note with that high compression head on it and it has been running wonderfully. No rain yet in Northern MI, but it will get here tonight. Looks like all day tomorrow, but we'll be headed back down state in the morning. Rain there too from what the forecast has to say. Thanks for watching!
A 79 with low hours probably only needs the water pump done, gear oil changed (check for leaks while empty), and possibly a fuel pump and hoses and a carburetor cleaning. Pull the spark plugs and fog the cylinders for some lubrication before trying to start it the first time. Thanks for watching!
gracias por tus videos, tengo un motor johnson 2 hp me gustaria si me apoyaras con mantenimiento al carburador te lo agradeceria mucho. excelente dia. Thank you for your videos, I have a 2 hp Johnson engine. I would like it if you could help me with carburetor maintenance, I would greatly appreciate it. excellent day.
Thank you for watching! I habe a series of videos on my channel going through the whole tune up process on these motors. I'm working on a '59 18hp, but the carburetor work is the same as the 2hp. I hope the video helps.
It sure did in this case. Compression went from about 110psi to about 155psi and it is very noticeable when starting the motor. It runs beautifully and is very crisp through the entire rpm range. Thanks for watching!

Another great success!!! Thanks for the ride along!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
I have a 25 hp cylinder head on my shelf just waiting to try this out! This motor seems to be fine with the high compression. Thanks for posting!

Pretty quick motor!

These outboards were popular in Bergen Norway and used on 10’ with dinghies obtaining good speed. Unfortunately not many left here now - salt water.

I’m picking up a low hours, 1965’ FD-19D, 18 horse power on Saturday. Same as yours. Can’t wait to get it running like yours is. Thanks for the info!
They're great motors. The 22c.i OMCs are my favorites. Good luck with yours and thanks for watching!

Another Johnny-Rude engine! Mark.
Any way you can help me identify my old super fastwin evinrude 18hp?
What is the model number on the nameplate?
I have a 79 even ride I just bought and I need someone who knows what their doing to go through it it has low hours but has not been run in years

I guess a 25 hp head gets you 25mph in this case. She’s a screamer!
