South Indian Comfort Food with Swagath Gourmet: Family Food

  • In the premiere episode of Family Food, we head to Swagath Gourmet, a South Indian restaurant run by the Iyengar family in Edison, New Jersey. We meet brothers Sesha and Murali as well as Murali's wife Padma, who all share a passion for bringing authentic South Indian food to the table. The lentil- and rice-based vegetarian dishes that have made Swagath a local favorite are not only delicious, but also extremely healthy.
After spending time with the Iyengars in their restaurant and their tight-knit community of Edison, we see it's no coincidence that the word "swagath" means "welcome" in their native tongue. The minute you walk into Swagath, you feel like a part of the family.

I think one general rule when it comes to judging how good an "ethnic" restaurant is going to be, is seeing how many people of that ethnicity go there. This place seems to be one of those that Indians trust. I live in Tokyo, and my favourite restaurants here is extremely popular with Indians. The same goes for my favourite Thai place. It's also interesting that these places are often nothing fancy to look at, and aren't expensive. They're just genuine.

Kannada people especially resent Tamils, their fellow South Indians, god damn it.
Don't give me the BS, South Indians are also very much racist, like the rest of India. More so the South Indians of Mumbai, who are even more parochial minded, as they often like to let out or even sell their properties only to fellow South Indians, since they feel only their fellow South Indians are trustworthy and that non Southies will cheat them or something (this my own Telugu friend told me, from Matunga, close to Dadar, which has a massive South Indian population).

akhilesh v... They are Iyengars. They form a decent sized community in Mysuru and Bengaluru. Iyengars are originally from Tamil Nadu. A good number of them migrated to Karnataka in the 12th century. But even to this day, they have maintained their linguistic identity despite integrating into Karnataka culture this forming a sub culture of their own.

South Indian cuisine is a blanket term covering the food culture of 4 states.. idli, dosas, wadas and some rice dishes may be common but it does not encompass the vast variety of other food which you can find within each individual state.. during my stay in Europe, I found a rather strange pattern followed for Indian restaurants. No matter which country you travel within Schengen zone. They all will serve xacuti and vindaloo which is specially goan and it is rarely eaten in India (not generalising but I have never found them in menus in India).
This is the beauty I suppose. Each state within India has so many dishes to offer.
Same goes for Italy and China.

e sailesh to add to this. ‘Brahmanism’ if I may exists in every religion in South India because in the end, they were the descendants of one or more castes within Hinduism.
