Great video. Thank you for actually showing how to adjust the parking brake, which most other videos just gloss over. This is important for those of us who never touched drum brakes and haven't had to touch parking brakes before. Thanks also for really addressing the rust, which is also not present in many videos but is a major factor here in NE Ohio.
😂 I’m from Alabama. Loved “ when I retire I’m gonna move down south and take my crescent wrench with me. Fix everything“. It’s crescent “ranch” down here lol. Thx for the video. Very informative and professional.
Nice to see a video that does not involve a $10,000 scan tool. Keep up the good work. Your videos are always very informative. You come across as a very honest businessman. The other day, one of my coworkers asked if I could recommend a reliable mechanic. Unfortunately, you’re too far away.
This afternoon I redid my rear brakes and took extra time to clean the rust off the brackets. What a difference it makes! The pads actually slide instead of needing a hammer to get them into place. THANKS!!!!
I think I shard my britches a little when the brake clean music sounded. It has been so long since I heard that. Then it happened again. Awesome, two brake clean intros in one vid. I am now going to proceed to change my britches.
I have a 1st gen honda ridgeline that I love. The old girl is needing some handy work, and the dealer wants way too much $ for the work. You make it look easy. Although, I am certain it took years to master this stuff. Thank you for the educational video and entertainment.
I bought the 3M clean around the stud cleaner and I think they are the cats ass. I was able to use them the past 2 weekends.. Thank you for showing every step when your doing repairs.. Very helpful for a DIYer like myself...
Appreciated and enjoyed the video on Honda Ridgeline rear brake rotor and pads. I can appreciate the particular attention you paid to the calcium and the problems it presents in maintaining a vehicle up north. You are more than welcome to bring your crescent wrench with you when you retire and move down south with the rest of us.Thanks.
I like seeing a mechanic that does a quality job. No short cuts to save time. I would use you in a heartbeat if you were a mechanic near me. I’m sure everyone watching loves your videos. Always a job well done Best of Luck.
Eric O even makes a simple brake job look so darn good. Customers all over the country would have less complaints after brake repairs if mechanics did quality work like this video illustrates. Always impressed with the time spend on the small but highly important details of his jobs. I also learn a lot because he takes the time to explain those smaller details and the consequences that may arise if you fail to do them. Ive always over lubricated my sliding pins because I once had those pins seize up on me in the bracket. Eric explained why over lubricating those pins can actually cause MORE problems by pushing the pins back out and hanging up the pads defeating your whole objective. Thank you Eric O.
‘Not rocket science’ maybe, but I’ve been a shade tree mechanic for 30+ years and I still learned something. I live south of the rust belt and am always amazed at the crust you have to deal with. Jeez!
Wife came home the other day telling me her "front" brakes were making a horrible noise, turns out it was both the rears with the driver's side actually dragging. I figured I'd look to see if there were any TH-cam videos on it and found yours. I'm pretty good with a wrench and plan to go a few steps further than you did like painting the calipers and hitting the suspension components with rust restorer and paint after a little cleanup but I'd like to thank you for your efforts it's going to make my job go a lot smoother seeing the process in advance. Looks pretty straight forward, the truck's already on jack stands and wheels removed, next step is remove the calipers and see how bad things look, I'm hoping to get away with just rotors and pads and removing the rust nodules before hitting whatever needs it with some paint including the calipers. For lube I like to use some well placed silver never seize, can anyone tell me why this is a bad idea? I've never had an issue with it.
I am getting ready to buy a used Ridgeline. I have seen your videos prior to this one and I have found ,once again, your video to be helpful. THANKS ! ! !
Yep grew up with the two basic tools to fix anything....crescent wrench and screwdriver, that's all you need in Alabama, of course every tool has a hammer side. Keep em coming
Oh yeah, done that job a few times on the old 2005 Odyssey with 180kmi. Love Honda brakes, there's just somethin' about how easy they are. Thanks Eric!
I switched to the permatex ceramic brake grease 8 months ago and have had great success with it. I am also in the rust belt of new England (CT). My come back rate is almost zero since the switch. My opinion; Best stuff ever....
Congrats on a hundred thousand subs Mr. O! Been quite a while since I hopped on the SMA train, still loving it! Thank you for continuing to share your adventures with us!
Eric, looking at the backing plates reminds me of dealing with the cars here on the east coat of Canada. The amount of rust we have to deal with is incredible.
Hey eric i have learned some new tricks and how to be better tech watching your vids just want to thank you sir for your time and effort i know it's not easy especially have a family and a busniess keep up the good work
Thanks for your video. I have an 2008 that I have to do all 4 wheels, rotors, new pads. I”m glad I have a small lift to use so I can methodically do all 4 at once. I”m glad I don’t have the salt/rust issues in my area. I’ll be checking your other Ridgeline vids for more tips. Thanks !!!
I us the Permatex Ceramic Extreme on all the metal contact points like you and use Permatex Ultra Disc Brake Caliper Lube on the slide pins & bushings. Never had any issues myself with any brake jobs on customer cars or my own. Heard & read all the issues some people have had but they are the few. Probably going to try the Permatex 80653 Silicone Extreme Brake Parts Lubricant next...heard some great reviews on it and it is supposed to be compatible with all rubber boots, seals, bushings...after I use up all the stuff that has worked great for years :D
@South Main Auto THANK YOU! I’m about to do front and rear brakes on my “new to me” 2006 Ridgeline in two weeks! I actually flowcharted your directions/actions while watching this video. I’ve actually done brakes several times on my 1995 Saab 900 but for some reason I’ve been apprehensive about doing the Ridgeline brakes. Seeing your video made me realize that it’s basically the same, just a bigger vehicle. Found your channel by accident. So glad I subscribed! 😍😍😍 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 I ASSUME the fronts are just as easy with no “gotchas” I need worry about?
As usual you are the MAN. Too bad you're so far away. Maybe you can start a host a viewer program where you select one lucky viewer to watch you work in person? Id volunteer to be the first lucky viewer! Awesome.
Been using the purple stuff ever since the NAPA guy put it in my bag o'goodies without me knowing. Was $20 then - nice to get it free! I've seen the stuff harden up a bit on my truck, but that thing gets abused big time. Heavy foot no matter what I'm towing behind it. It's brakes get HOT. :D Lesser brake lubes would just break down and fail completely, and ruin the pads when the caliper seized on the pins. Got a couple stories for ya regarding local "techs" and how people view quality work. First, I brought my '93 Volvo 940 to the glass place for a new windshield. Found my carpet sopping wet on the passenger side - had to take the seat, and all the sound deadening "jute" out of there to drip dry. Anyway, I get the car back, and my passenger side wiper is SMOKED - stripped clean. Wouldn't even move, even with the nut tight. I get that it's a nearly 25 year old car, but the guy didn't even tell me! To top it all off, the driver's side wiper arm was mounted too high up on the windshield - looked ridiculous! Very few people these days take the time and effort to do a good job. Sad. Story #2: neighbor had a rear hub bearing installed at another shop since I was busy with my addition project. That was a little over 2 weeks back. He stops by and says his e-brake isn't working anymore. So I yank the rear brakes and rotors after verifying the cable was still good and moving everything as it should. Turns out they were just out of adjustment, probably from my 86 year old neighbor leaving it on a couple times. It happens. But, on the side that had the shiny new hub bearing, the adjuster star was so friggin tight I had to remove it and throw it in the vice, and hog on it with big Channel Locks before it broke free - I can only assume it was the last guy that worked on it, spinning the star the wrong way ... with a hammer and screwdriver ... and gave up when they got it stuck, and couldn't recall which way it was supposed to turn. Unreal! Took me all of 45 minutes to do both sides, and that's using a jack and jack stands! They were right there - they could've at least got ONE parking brake working - better than NONE! Anyway, I got her working correctly. Now if he leaves the brake on, it'll drag the rear tires - that will get his attention. :)
What we have in the south are high school and college kids who go mudding and leave the crud on their trucks to show off. We don't have salt except on the beaches. Kudos for dealing with all that salt.
You're very entertaining to watch and confident which is wonderful, I think it's funny you're like remember if I can do it you can do it, I just watched your valve adjustment on the Honda Ridgeline, you're like if you haven't done this before you probably shouldn't. I'm going to try anyway
Good times with SMA. Interesting to see the little things people to differently, I always fit the caliper bracket to the car, then put the pads in, otherwise I end up dropping them lol. Also first step should be check the brake fluid, if it's been topped off it could overflow when you press the piston back in!
"take my Cresent Wrench and move to Florida" epic comment. I moved to Wyoming after 36 years of NY road salt. You can't imagine how nice it is to work on cars here. Thanks.
Impact screwdrivers are AMAZING!! I use to use the one from Harber Freight but after a few uses it went into the garage and I got the 23 piece set from MATCO best set in the market I think.
Thanks Eric. You just saved me a bunch of money. Your instructions are right on. Oh, BTW, when you state 'factory spec for tightness, it would be a big help if you said how many foot pounds etc. Thanks.
Eric - It is fun to pound on the rotor to get it off but the rotors on the Ridgeline have threaded bolt holes to thread in two metric bolts (forgot the size/have them at home) and as you alternatively tighten them, it'll pop the rotor off. Clever Honda design...Again, not as much fun as a 3 lb sledge but quieter.
That brought back memories from when I lived in the finger lakes. It always seemed to me that every time I had to bleed rear drums that I might as well just have a couple wheel cylinders ordered up ready to go. Use to hate that and have freaking brake line snapping off at the fittings when doing caliper R&Rs
Great video! I never understood the right way to lube the pads and bracket. Question: when you push the piston back on the calipers, don’t you push brake fluid back to the master cylinder and possibly out the top?
Great video! Thanks a ton for this comprehensive brake job video. Very informative and thorough. I'm about to do my own brake job on all 4 wheels of my 2008 Honda Ridgeline. I was told I need rotors and pads on all wheels and was quoted on Carquest Platinum rotors and Carquest Wearever ceramic pads. Maybe you can't (or don't want to give reviews) but if you could just give me a thumbs up or down on those parts I'd appreciate it. Just making sure I wasn't being hosed by the shop....it could be that I don't need all 4 wheels done.
Please clear up the Honda CRV brake wear indicator position for me. Just did my first brake job ever which went well, however, I think I hear a slight grinding sound (on the right front rotor when coming to a slow stop. I used all the products you've used in this and previous videos and I'm certain I greased up all required area where metal to metal contact exists. I got the caliper guide pins in correctly with the one with the rubber bushing on the bottom. They too have been greased and the boots have been burped. The brake hardware kit came with everything except the anti-rattle clip. The hub was cleaned and I ground all the rust away so that it was super smooth...even used emory cloth to do a final sanding. Used copper based silicone paste on the hub as well. CRV drives great but that grinding (rotor?) sound on the right is really bugging me. I put the inside brake pads (where the caliper boots are located) installed with the indicator down just like I saw on the old pads. Once I torqued the caliper mount and guide pin bolts, I tested and the calpier with pads installed slid side to side just fine. Oh, I even lined up the flat side of the caliper pins with the slots on the caliper mounts. So, could the inside brake pads have been installed incorrectly from the start and may be causing my issue? Please clarify so the newbie do-it-yourselfers are educated properly. Also, I only did my own brakes after having watch the two ladies change out that front suspension as you oversaw their work...funny as heck and that prompted me to man up and make things happen for myself.
I had that pucker. After a firestone shop left my a-arm bolts loose on an alignment, and I ripped the a-arm, shock, cv shaft off the frame, they didn't set the brakes on round three. (Round two was subpar parts replacing high end ones that were wrecked.) Pulled out of the shop, got to the end of the block, and blew through 6 lanes of traffic on a red light in Denver. E brake was left unhooked, somehow they thought it was causing problems bleeding brakes... Thank god I somehow made it through. I almost got arrested that day.
Oh yeah. I had to talk myself out of parking it in the middle of the lobby. *crash* *shatter* "Hey guys, I'll give you one guess what you forgot to do!"
Hey if you were located in NC I would let you do my brakes. I do it but you do such a thorough job. I usually clean any rust but install pads only unless rotors have groves in them, usually never clean like you. Thanks
Gotta love brake clean lol. I use it probably more then anyone at work. One of my coworkers said he’s gonna get me a belt holster to put right beside my leather man to hold a little can of brake clean lol I’d probably wear it too....
All I need is a battery powered impact ratchet! Know of any good ones? My Ryobi impact gun is the shiznit, jus too big to fit behind rotors! Of all the videos available, I always check SMA first. Your content is easy to understand for a working class person, like myself! Appreciate the info, you have saved me a bunch of money btw.
Update....2010 Hondoo Ridgeline passenger side rear brakes - The 17mm caliper mounting bolts require a impact ratchet, because there is limited clearance for an impact gun, or a breaker bar for a regular ratchet due to bolt orientation (the way you have to unscrew them to get out). Since I had it tore apart ready to remove and had no impact ratchet, after trying for hours and couldn't wait until the morning to go buy an impact ratchet, , I pulled out my other floor jack, took the core from one of my jack stands, and used both on the handle of my 1/2" socket wrench to add enough pressure to break both bolts loose. I was afraid of snapping the bolts, but the broke loose and everything went exactly as described in the video!

Work all day as a mechanic. What do I do? Go home and watch another Mechanic work. Thanks Eric entertaining as always.
That's how you learn something new.
Ha! Me too brother..
Nice to see a video that does not involve a $10,000 scan tool. Keep up the good work. Your videos are always very informative. You come across as a very honest businessman. The other day, one of my coworkers asked if I could recommend a reliable mechanic. Unfortunately, you’re too far away.
I'll take a different break video everyday it's better than what's on crappy TV good job Eric get a big buck
Oh brake clean, I have missed you and now you're back! Please don't ever leave me again.
This afternoon I redid my rear brakes and took extra time to clean the rust off the brackets. What a difference it makes! The pads actually slide instead of needing a hammer to get them into place. THANKS!!!!
We have rust in maryland but not as bad as new york. Love your videos.
Excellent Demonstration ! Clear, concise instructions and CLEAR views of all the steps in removal/replacement with great lighting.
You can ALWAYS tell the ability of a good mechanic by the brand of adjustable wrench he uses on your car!!
YIPPEE! Brake Clean returns! You used so much I can smell it here in Florida, love the smell. Want some pictures of non-crusty brakes?
I think I shard my britches a little when the brake clean music sounded. It has been so long since I heard that. Then it happened again. Awesome, two brake clean intros in one vid. I am now going to proceed to change my britches.
This is a great reminder of why I just sprayed a little bit of extra Krown rustproofing when I swapped on my winter tires.
I have a 1st gen honda ridgeline that I love. The old girl is needing some handy work, and the dealer wants way too much $ for the work. You make it look easy. Although, I am certain it took years to master this stuff. Thank you for the educational video and entertainment.
Seeing a notification from SMA makes my day. 😂👍
same here
I bought the 3M clean around the stud cleaner and I think they are the cats ass. I was
able to use them the past 2 weekends.. Thank you for showing every step when your doing repairs..
Very helpful for a DIYer like myself...
Thank you! You are my Go To guy when it comes to my Ridgeline!

Nice to see someone taking pride in a simple brake job. So many mechanics i've seen just slap on new pads and send the car on it's way.
Not sure why, but I find watching brake jobs oddly satisfying!! 😂😆

Sure glad you posted this today, Eric. SMA withdrawals are brutal!
Eric, looking at the backing plates reminds me of dealing with the cars here on the east coat of Canada. The amount of rust we have to deal with is incredible.
Hey eric i have learned some new tricks and how to be better tech watching your vids just want to thank you sir for your time and effort i know it's not easy especially have a family and a busniess keep up the good work
Working for Honda Corp for 10 years I know those seized rear pads all too well. I feel your pain Eric!!
I have watched a lot of Honda brake job videos, this is the best one yet :)
Thanks !!!
You make it look easy Eric, appreciate the video, got to throw in those brake jobs every now and then
Love the sound effects when you show the cans of cleaners or lubes you use ! LOL
I us the Permatex Ceramic Extreme on all the metal contact points like you and use Permatex Ultra Disc Brake Caliper Lube on the slide pins & bushings. man I wish there were Great mechanic's like yourself where I live!!! Good Job love all your work!!!!
I would love to see some videos of you replacing the different types of emergency brakes
Hey Eric, I went to buy that Permatex in Australia, they went to charge me $50 Usd, imported the same from the US for $15usd.
Videos like this make me glad I live in Florida.
Great tip about using a file to clean the caliper bracket. I've just been shining up the rust all these years.

I ASSUME the fronts are just as easy with no “gotchas” I need worry about?

Got a couple stories for ya regarding local "techs" and how people view quality work. First, I brought my '93 Volvo 940 to the glass place for a new windshield. Found my carpet sopping wet on the passenger side - had to take the seat, and all the sound deadening "jute" out of there to drip dry. Anyway, I get the car back, and my passenger side wiper is SMOKED - stripped clean. Wouldn't even move, even with the nut tight. Anyway, I got her working correctly. Now if he leaves the brake on, it'll drag the rear tires - that will get his attention. :)
Real good job explaining brake installation, very well explanation, give you a 10 & 5 star rating, thanks .
Watching your videos makes me glad I live in Virginia!
I'm very happy with the brake clean content in this video.

Always a satisfied viewer! Thanks Eric :)
Much better than Leon right? Right... glad we agree haha
Hahaaaaa .... Ladies don't kiss and tell ;) so to speak ....
A mother job well done Eric O.
You're very entertaining to watch and confident which is wonderful, I think it's funny you're like remember if I can do it you can do it, I just watched your valve adjustment on the Honda Ridgeline, you're like if you haven't done this before you probably shouldn't. I'm going to try anyway
Brake job videos never get old 😊
Man I wish I owned a car lift ! Thanks for sharing your video..fantastic
I know it's an older video but, it's one of my favs.

Brake Parts Cleaner on a brake job in a SMA video? Mind is blown! 😏
"take my Cresent Wrench and move to Florida" epic comment. I moved to Wyoming after 36 years of NY road salt. You can't imagine how nice it is to work on cars here. Thanks.
Your videos are still the best mate. 👍
You know you live in the rust belt when it takes longer to clean the rust off than it does to change the pads ;) Good tips!
Great video. Just had mine done in the 06 Ridgeline. Hope he was as good as you.
Impact screwdrivers are AMAZING!! I use to use the one from Harber Freight but after a few uses it went into the garage and I got the 23 piece set from MATCO best set in the market I think.

How can someone dislike? Great vid as always.
Haters gonna hate!
Thanks Mr.O for sharing another fantabuluas show. Looking forward to some Hunter O shows🍨🍩🍨🍩🍨cheers.
Thanks man. Your very easy to follow through the video
Works every time, unless it doesn’t... love it, thanks for the video
Great video! I never understood the right way to lube the pads and bracket. Question: when you push the piston back on the calipers, don’t you push brake fluid back to the master cylinder and possibly out the top?
Late to the party, but sincere thanks for the quality video .

my 07 is really clean under there but I live in Idaho, Good job , I will do Mine next summer
Very good presentation...I wish I'm close to your place and I'll let you do my brake system!!!
Congrats on the 100K subs!
Thanks for another informative and interesting video.
Learning new every day.. Thank you SIR!
Nice job Man your a true professional .
Please clear up the Honda CRV brake wear indicator position for me.
Your videos are always so satisfying lol
"What's up Mrs. O?"
"You need to eat your salad."
I LOVE the sound effect for the brake cleaner! 😂😂😂
89nissancrawler look at all the excitement you had. I suppose you did a come back? There’s idiots out there
Thanks
“To avoid a butt pucker pump the brakes”😂 Ima have to use this some time.
had headphones on turned up so i can hear you .. brake clean sound popped up scared me so bad i almost threw my cup across the room. thanks obama.
😆
Yeah Thanks Obama
I love these videos. Thanks for doing them :)
Finally made it to 100K!
Gotta love brake clean lol. I use it probably more then anyone at work. One of my coworkers said he’s gonna get me a belt holster to put right beside my leather man to hold a little can of brake clean lol I’d probably wear it too....
Good job like watching you work
All I need is a battery powered impact ratchet!
Just gotta love rust, it never sleeps. Thanks for the video.
Awesome video. Thanks for uploading.
