Savea talking crap as usual and Tagata Pasifika being his propaganda arm (as usual). The aim of the Media Council is to regulate the media industry on the same basis as the Broadcasting Standards Authority and Press Council does in New Zealand. The Media Council is made up of JOURNALISTS (i.e.: Savea's peers in the industry) and would have a representative from all the newspapers and media outlets in Samoa. Yes, there will be representatives there from the govt media (i.e.: 2AP and Savali News) but the majority of representatives would be from the independent media. The problem with freedom of the press in Samoa is that when people are slandered in the media, the only recourse is the Courts. However, most people cannot afford the legal fees to take the mighty media barons to court. The media council would simply provide cheap avenue for ordinary joe citizens to make complaints about journalistic ethics. For example, when Samoan clown journalists recently went and interviewed underage sexual abuse victims. People need to be protected against this sort of trashy tabloid journalism.
