ハンター坂は北野坂の西側に位置する通りで、かつてその北側にあった英国商人E・H・ハンターの洋館にちなんで名付けられました。
ハンターは1843年にアイルランドで生まれ、22歳で日本に来て、横浜港で商業活動を始めました。その後、神戸に移り、造船や鉄鋼などの事業を手がけ、日立造船の前身となる会社を興しました。ハンターの洋館は、1963年に北野町から王子動物園に移築され、「旧ハンター住宅」として国の重要文化財に指定されています。一方、彼が建てた日本家屋は北野に残され、「北野ハンター迎賓館」として知られ、ブライダルの場として活用されています。
また、「にしむら珈琲」や「フロインドリーブ」といった神戸を代表する名店がこの地を発祥としています。
Hunter Slope is a street located on the west side of Kitanozaka, named after the Western-style house of the British merchant E. H. Hunter that once stood to the north of it. Hunter was born in Ireland in 1843 and came to Japan at the age of 22, where he began his commercial activities at Yokohama Port. Later, he moved to Kobe and engaged in businesses such as shipbuilding and steel, founding a company that would become the predecessor of Hitachi Zosen. Hunter’s Western-style house was relocated from Kitano-cho to Oji Zoo in 1963 and has been designated as an important cultural property of the country, known as the “Former Hunter Residence.” On the other hand, the Japanese-style house he built remains in Kitano and is known as the “Kitano Hunter Guesthouse,” utilized as a bridal venue. Furthermore, Kobe’s renowned shops such as “Nishimura Coffee” and “Freundlieb” originated from this area.
