I have been making my way through John Carpenter's films for the last few months. The Thing is an absolute classic. They live, is outstandingly fun and immersive. It is such a fun and engaging movie. Carpenter is so good at creating these worlds that feel so moody and alive. They Live sucks you in, right through the TV or theater screen. The back alley fight scene is amazing. It's absurdly drawn out and visceral. I love it. It works on every level.
The Thing, They Live is absolutely the best double bill I've ever heard of. Sounds like that theater is great, even putting retro trailers in between! I need to get back to a theater for something like this soon.
