- northcofire.com - Brian Kelly, owner of Northco Fire, demonstrates how to light a pilot light on a gas fireplace.
IMPORTANT: when attempting to light your own pilot light, it's important to know where the gas valve shutoff switch is located. Being cautious and understanding the risks of working with gas can save your life. If in any way you're unsure or uncomfortable working with gas, call a licensed gas fireplace technician BEFORE attempting to do this on your own.

Thank you so much! We couldn’t get the pilot to light until watching your video!
Great job. Got it lit the first time. Excellent instructions!
This was PERFECT!!! straight forward, quick and easy. Thank you!
I've warch 3 videos before this one and this one actually helped. Thank you!😊
Thank you very much, your video saved me at least $200, great content!
Thank you so very much! I turned my fireplace off last winter because just the pilot being on was enough for the gas company to charge me $45 per month. So it is super cold in Virginia and I wanted to turn the fireplace back on. I watched your video and now my living room looks amazing. It’s warm too. Thank you.
Great video. It was easy to understand and flow. 🤙🏽
Thanks, your directions were very clear and you saved the day!
I farted
Your instructions were 100% correct.... thank you.
Best video yet. Thank you 😃
Perfect, succinct, accurate. Thanks so much.
Thanks! Right to the point and solved my fireplace issue! 🔥
Thank you! This worked like a charm.
We have an older heatilator with kind of an all in one knob (GA266908) this helped do the trick ours seems to allow us to depress and turn it to adjust the pilot light size. I appreciate this straight forward guide as we cannot find the owners manuel for this model and all references to the heatilators show either this setup or a dual knob system. Many thanks! Saving this for next year as we forget how to re-start the pilot every time :)!
great video, helped alot. do I keep the knob on pilot and then just turn it "on" when I want fire? I don't want to turn it to off and then have to jump it and light the pilot on again.
Ah this video was helpful!
Thank you. That worked.
Thanks....you saved me a call to the repair person to relight the pilot lite that I switched off
Every year I dread doing this. Your concise and short-winded explanation got me through a successful lighting. This is, and I’m not exaggerating-the best tutorial. Thanks very much. 💥 💥 🤯 -😊update pilot light fizzled out I could not re-light it, very very annoying 😡 do I really have to call a technician? not happy
Good heater really like it it came in with a little dent on the top but I ain't no worry about it it won't too bad
Thank you so much
This was perfect. Thank you!! One question: there's also a red on/off switch, that is currently in the off position. What does that do?
That is the service switch. Leave it in the off position. It allows you to turn on and off the fireplace while servicing the fireplace.
thank you so much for this tutorial!! i have been trying for weeks to get my pilot to turn on and this explanation worked!
(it didnt work the first time i tried, but once i realized my gas key was turned off it worked wonderfully lol)
Thank you for the video I do have the pilot light turned on but my fireplace has a switch when I turn on the switch for the fireplace but it does not turn on. Do you have an idea why?
HELP PLS ANSWER
So Rain has been pouring into my fireplace from the chimney right down into where the flames come out. Can I still use it?
This happened last year too as new owners refuse to replace the chimney cap, and all the gas pipes rusted shut.
Can I use the gas fireplace safely anyways? They refuse all maintenance requests.
Push in the Pilot knob...Got it! 👍🏾
Great view of your hands
Omg great video! Thank you so much! I got it back on ☺️
Thank you! My vavle looks a little older (house was constructed in 1993). But it functions the exact same.
Thank you ! I just moved into a building with a free gas fireplace and had no idea how to turn it on. I had no idea that the pilot knob was a button also.😂
Thank you! Super helpful
Thanks to your video, I was able to ignite my fire place this morning. 👍👍👍
Perfect! Thank you, no professional service $$ needed! Easy directions!
that is great
Thank you. Do I have to remove the glass to use it?
Thank you👍.........My mistake was thinking "one click" of the igniter. would be enough.
Why did I find this on the mark Rober homepage?
I did the exact same steps but I could never get my pilot lite. It’s like the gas isn’t coming through the lines. Held the pilot for 2-3 minutes without striking and nothing
Make sure your gas supply line is open (look for a red lever, handle should be parallel with gas line). If it is open, then you likely have a faulty gas valve.
Thank you!!!!!
Thanks you helped me out
Cheers Brian
Great video!! Thank you so much! One question: I followed all those instructions and it worked but the natural gas fumes got stronger and stronger. I turned it off after a couple of mins. Is the gas fumes just part of the process? Thanks
I have a 20-year-old Heat n glo 6000TR-NF gas fireplace, serial number 37537. My pilot light is on and my wall-mounted thermostat will not turn on the flames and fan. I can turn them both on manually. I cleaned the thermopile and vacuumed all of the dust-out. I also tested the thermostat using a U-shaped paper clip on the 2 wires in it and had no luck. My thermopile has 3 wires. All of the thermopiles online that I see only have 2 wires. Please advise!
Trying to start my pilot hit the igniter multiple times while pressing pressing the fuel release valve and nothing is happening once i see the blue light came on but im having to use 1 hand for 2 objectives and can not get it to get going
Mine didn't relight and I tried for around 30 seconds then I got nervous and stopped. How do you know if gas is still coming in?
What if it doesn’t light though?
How do I contact you ?
In the winter, what setting should you have the control nob by default? On, Off or Pilot? For instance, is it bad to have it on Pilot or On (without flames) for days/weeks at a time?
Yes have it off when not used
What happens if it doesnt stay lit after 1 min
Thanks for a add that is longer then the video

Remarkable
do I turn the gas nob off once its let
Felt like I just climbed a mountain
I feel like we live in 1924. Why would we have to wait over 60 seconds to light?
Can't even see the locations
Fellow, no one can see behind your hand
🙂👍
Aargh! You assume I know how to remove the cover. I don’t. There’s no handle or anything I see to help me remove the cover. 👎
Fireplaces differ so not everyone will be able to access the same way. Some have a drop down in the front, others are more complex.
Very helpful thank you!
THANK YOU!!!!!!
Thanks!!
