Such great memories. Saffa moved up from London to live in Stokesley for 4 years. Love the people, the pubs, the countryside, however it was the weather that finally drove me to leave and head to Singapore. Red lion Blakey Ridge for the best pint of Old Peculiar together with a steak and ales pie after a morning of trail running. Good times and wonderful memories. Best part of the UK is the north east.
As another ex-patriated Northerner (from Scarborough, NOT Whitby...bluddy ell) I am enjoying this series immensely. It also demonstrates the everyday humour and personality of the North and of Britain as a whole that often seems lost in the ever increasing outside influences on society and culture here, for example: "I've turned him round so he won't see" *continues failing to kill other crab*.
Just like Germany, the UK has some real gems in it's cuisine but has a pretty negative image. I don't think this series is doing anything to alter that image.
Objectively, comparatively to the rest of the world, British cuisine is definitely not top-tier... I say this as a Northen English man, filling, yes, tasty? Hmm...
River Tyne was once so abundant in salmon that locals became bored of the now middle to upper class dinner favourite. Sometimes I feel these vice docs focussing on specific regions are trying to prosper the notion of all people in that area being like that, I'm not really a typical northerner my parents moved up from London and i have a generally middle class outlook, personally i don't think that this area is any worse or better than other areas in terms of ingredients and quality, go to any farmers market in Newcastle and there is some quality nosh to be had. The one thing is deprivation, a friend of mine was a primary school teacher up in Blyth on Northumberland coast, he said some of kids were very malnourished and had little knowledge if vegetables, breakfast was haribo and dinner chips.
It's strange how parmos are so localised, I grew up 35 miles south of Middlesborough and had never heard of them until quite recently...I have still never seen one to this day.
I'm from Teeside and to be entirely honest, nothing about this video really does the food nor the people justice...But still parmo's are phe-goddamn-nomenal! However, like anything else, some of us like it and some don't. In THIS house it'll be Estons Expresso Pizzeria that'll be on the plate most nights though.
Yes, you are only supposed to do it that way if you have already stunned them with electric, or if you have put them in a sleep state by popping them in ice/a freezer.
Great to see a typical boro crowd loving life in the europa, sadly now consigned to history. Parmo love is spreading, had them in the lakes recently. The Devine Greek in Thornaby is my current Parmo provider, given five stars by the Parmo hunters.. They know their stuff.
Never heard of a Parmo but as I’m thinking about running a food truck in France where I live, I may spread the gospel here ( without the chocolate variety).
i fucking love parmos, but beware of the 'jeff the chef' ones they sell in supermarkets around the uk they taste nothing like one straight out of a teesside pizza-shop!! UTB!!!!
Uprated. I LOVED the North of England, and the South of Scotland! I was FINE with the food in both countries, since 1980, many times, mostly for pleasure but a little bit for work. I just stuck to local specialties and game. No problem! Crab fishing by boat is horribly hard and dangerous. Seafood and shellfish, any sea or water products, in fact, are generally way too toxic to eat or too stressed to harvest, however, so I reluctantly avoid them. (But do not exclude them. Depends.) The parmo is, at this point, after living in France so long from the USA via Italy, too gloopy for me likely, but I certainly would try it! I really like doing some British and Scottish dishes here, making my own pastry, getting the gnarly supplies and cooking them all down. Fun clip. I think the North of England is a bit like the North of France, which has a bad reputation. Undeserved. I can really recommend the Northeast of England as a visit destination. Go look, study the history, behave, and try some things! Very fun clip, thank you.
I'm from the midlands, but I've had parmos from the best parmo takeaways in the teeside. They're F**king top! I tried one in a fancy diner in Nottingham. I wanted to kick the chef in face and spit on him. He'd tried to 'fancy it' up. If you want a parmo, go north/east. I want a parmo now :(
Wow that crab part was so depressing. They clung together in the bag. The spared crab lost the will to live after the suffering it endured. Fuck. Why didn't you just kill it when you caught it instead of sticking them in a bag?
Eh, it was probably shocked and not in its deep water place, and might not have survived. I would have considered regifting it. Many animals and fish, birds, are so traumatized by being caught, they just fall off.
CuteCatFaith yeah i get that, but if you go out w fishermen and they give you a gift, you dont nullify their hard work by trying to put it back where it came from
paucceri Yes, there are also a lot of superstitions about boats, ships, water, the sea, et c. Some things are considered highly inauspicious. Last year I read a rather long piece on some of them, and also, the cost and trouble you have to go to to rename a vessel. Otherwise, the sea will not recognize her and will reclaim her quickly. If the TITANIC was, indeed, her sister ship, badly damaged in a mishap, then refitted, and disguised, not only was their structural damage, but the new, fake, cheating ship was doomed, if you believe superstition. At the very least, it's pretty rude to do what he did, in and of itself. At least to document it.
I was born in Yorkshire and LOVE my food, and have to say this episode at least did nothing but concrete the notion that Northerners know nothing about good food.
Not tryna gatekeep, but the Parmo is a Middlesbrough thing, not a teeside thing. Yeah, it got popular around teeside, but the OG parmos, the experimentation & improvements in ingredients; quality, innovation etc etc will always be a Boro/Middlesbrough thing. They legit started on Linthrope Road. I was born & grew up literally the side street off of Linthorpe Road. Not being biased (well maybe a bit), but the best Parmos are obviously gunnu come from Boro!! Very disappointed that Parmos across Middlesbrough weren’t covered; it’s legit the birthplace of the Parmo 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
he didn't need to stab it first, you can just toss em into a pot w/ about an inch or 2 of water, hold the lid down and steam em. That's what we do anyway
'I wanted to be an accountant' lel

The Red Lion is superb.
Ben is a great reporter, make more with him!
As another ex-patriated Northerner (from Scarborough, NOT Whitby...bluddy ell) I am enjoying this series immensely. There's something about this show that's got me hooked. I wonder if the crab survived.
Thats some PRIMO PARMO! Gonna start my own Parmo shop in California!
RiotHouse have you opened yet?
Parmo seems like the best thing in the world!
It is
"Make sure the other one isn't looking"
"I turned him around so he couldn't see"
Im dead
Not so grim up north! Top grub x
Christ, absolute state of the people in the late night Parmo restaurant. That gene pool is barely ankle deep.
I often went on holiday to Whitby and Middlesbrough as a kid and believe me, the food is amazing. I even went fishing on of the boats.
Just like Germany, the UK has some real gems in it's cuisine but has a pretty negative image. I don't think this series is doing anything to alter that image.
It’s not just an “image” it’s their truth and this shit is depressing
Objectively, comparatively to the rest of the world, British cuisine is definitely not top-tier... I say this as a Northen English man, filling, yes, tasty? Hmm...
As a northerner I can honestly say we dont care what anyone thinks, we love who we are.
A guide to wales would make for a good series
I want a Parmo, it looks like perfect night time food, bring it to Las Vegas and it will sell like crazy
This looks depressing, yet extremely delicious
Thats basically teeside
Been a Boro lad I can confirm
England is pretty impressive, keep up the good work mate.
I've just moved to Stockton from London and I've always ignored Parmo. Gonna get me one right bloody now :)
You must eat parmo by now ?
This was great. Don't know much about northern England, learned a lot. Pamo's sound fucking amazing!!
It isss
Talk about how much work was put into catching the crabs then releases one 5 seconds later......
He'd already paid the guy for it. So he's not arsed if it's released.
Yeah, and the crab in question could have been too small to keep. Gotta follow those sizing regulations, even in the UK.
didn't even take the tape off before boiling them lol
Parmo seems like a completely genious invention, tbh. Swede here who wants to go drunk eating in teesside now!
Trust me you don’t want to end up in teeside lol
It's strange how parmos are so localised, I grew up 35 miles south of Middlesborough and had never heard of them until quite recently...I have still never seen one to this day.
You see them around but they dont compare to a boro parmo.
Those accents are something special!
he really came in there and ate off everyone's plate............beautiful
I'm from Teeside and to be entirely honest, nothing about this video really does the food nor the people justice...But still parmo's are phe-goddamn-nomenal! However, like anything else, some of us like it and some don't. In THIS house it'll be Estons Expresso Pizzeria that'll be on the plate most nights though.
YES, Ben is back.
Europa was the original joint and atmosphere. Vinegar on salad. Sadly closed!!! Those fries went with it!!!
Parmo looks reallllly gooooooood
Good host and actually educational
11:03 she was a cleaner at middlesbrough council a few years ago.
And Rock Climbing. It’s counterintuitive but The Lake District & The North is a World Class Rock Climbing & an international climbing destination
No way this guy stabbing the crab was more ethical than just checking them into the pot
Yes, you are only supposed to do it that way if you have already stunned them with electric, or if you have put them in a sleep state by popping them in ice/a freezer.
What's the music playing in the background when they eat parmo, sound super familiar
I liked this. Host seems pretty real
Ahhh home :)
I like this Ben guy. Post more things with ben.
North is the best for food people and countryside ooh and no GANGSSSS haha
Aren't your footie supporters all basically in gangs?
You need to cover the chicken Patmos in Middlesbrough
Great to see a typical boro crowd loving life in the europa, sadly now consigned to history.
Parmo love is spreading, had them in the lakes recently.
The Devine Greek in Thornaby is my current Parmo provider, given five stars by the Parmo hunters..
They know their stuff.
Yep, a Boro institution gone like all the old Boro places with character and heart
Never heard of a Parmo but as I’m thinking about running a food truck in France where I live, I may spread the gospel here ( without the chocolate variety).
parmos are the boyoo 👌 #utb
top lads! very fun to watch lol
I feel like if that guy that walked in at 11:24 said “no” to the question “d’ya like Parmos” he would of got his face reconstructed
Can someone tell me what went on with the released crab?
Died
When visiting family yrs ago down sheffield we always got asked to take stotties down from newcastle lol
The parmo is a culture 😂
Parmo is like that kind of food, that should only be eaten during depression seasons or PMS days?
my homeland, teesside represent
Good video but do I really have to watch 3 adverts for The Snowman during it
Only ever heard of a parmo when it has tomato sauce. 😁
i fucking love parmos, but beware of the 'jeff the chef' ones they sell in supermarkets around the uk they taste nothing like one straight out of a teesside pizza-shop!! UTB!!!!

I'm from the midlands, but I've had parmos from the best parmo takeaways in the teeside. They're F**king top!

Parmo best dish eva
Aight. So that's the FUCKIN' chicken parmo that tintin from teesside is always looking for! Looks so good!
A man after my own heart. He genuinely felt bad about killing the crab. You could tell the moment it's life left its body.
very disrespectful to go out with those fishermen, take their gift of 2 crabs, and just set the other one free.
Eh, it was probably shocked and not in its deep water place, and might not have survived. I would have considered regifting it. Many animals and fish, birds, are so traumatized by being caught, they just fall off.

Easy for you to research and look up. If you buy a boat and change the name, follow the protocol.
Damn I want a parmo
Well this was cute and nice.
Middlesbrough
I was born in Yorkshire and LOVE my food, and have to say this episode at least did nothing but concrete the notion that Northerners know nothing about good food.
You dont know what your talking about....if you cant put gravy on it, it's not worth eating.
Instead of 'EU fishing quotas' it should rather be 'intensive fishing has led to EU quotas'
yay the put the crab back in the ocean
kate-mia white yayayayay No.
didn't know leigh griffiths rated parmos in his spare time
A parmo is not a north east institute! It's for smog monsters from teeside.
