In another world, the ball doesnt bounce of the post and go straight to bonucci for him to tap in and England win 1-0. It's easy to criticize southgate but sometimes it's just luck 🤷‍♂️.

Yes. They caught Italy cold and got the early goal. Credit for that, but Donnarumma never had to make another save for 118 minutes. After the first 15 or 20 minutes Italy dominated the game. Chiellini and Bonucci could have sat in deck chairs with a glass of wine and a cigar. I doubt they've had many easier games in their careers.

@@MildChunkySalsa Italy wasn’t bad, simply it’s difficult to score against catenaccio, with the whole England team in their goal and only Harry Kane out for a counterattack, but Italy attacked in 10 and the equalizer was just a matter of time. Not to mention in the final Italy was left without Zaniolo and Spinazzola, Chiesa going out and Jorginho almost going out, and despite lots of injuries Italy managed its men and kept attacking.

Why? They weren't composed or confident in THAT exact moment because they weren't having a good game. To minimize this risk, the penalty takers must be chosen based on in-game performance. You choose the players who performed the best in 90 minutes of the game. For instance, Maguire, a defender, scored his pen. Why? He was confident and had a good performance in 120 min. Disagree with Onuoha about not needing to get warm before a penalty. Anybody who has ever competed at any level will tell you that you're more nervous/anxious at the very beginning of your play time. But once you've had some touches, passes/shots, tackles, ect. you get into a flow state where you're less nervous and get into a rhythm. Rashford/Sancho never got into that rhythm of the game. They were at their most anxious just entering extremely late and that was compounded even more by having to take a penalty with the tournament on the line.

Even if it’s not FIFA’s rule it was my rule. Respect to Southgate, but if a coach is able and allowed to do that, then by that reckoning, Italy should have been allowed to swap out Donnarumma for a fresh keeper that had not played through to extra time! The whole thing is ludicrous. FIFA please do something about this grey area.

Nedum & Steve got it wrong. Statistics give empirical evidence: players who enter to take a pen at the 120, these two, like Zaza for Italy in 2016, Carragher in 2006, all missed. The same reason why an otherwise excellent Maguire terribly mispasses to Pickford (to give a corner) in the 1st min or why Di Lorenzo missed Shaw's run on the 2nd. It's the nerves and pressure of starting a big game, over time you shake it off as you get more and more involved. As you walk to the spot from the middle, your heart beats faster and your stomach cramps, while most others on the pitch had the benefit of going through that 120 mins earlier

However, the players that are substituted at the last minute of extra time definitely has to be for the penalty shootout, this time they have higher expectations to have to score (really high pressure)
Plus, Southgate was taking a risk there. What if the ball wasn't kicked out, they wouldn't even have got subbed in

Foden +Grealish played 10 mins togethe during the whole tournament. Kane doesn't drop so far back if you play those two with Sterling running in behind then you can drop Mount to play alongside Rice or Phillips or to the bench. Mount doesn't play well deep. Agree with the other stances but Mount and Kane dont combine well. Mount to me is more of a in behind kind of attacking mid that creates space for others to come in to. Works great when you have someone coming in behind but not good when your striker is also dropping deep. I think dropping mount deep though would ruin the space for Sterling and Saka to run into. That's why mount didn't receive the ball a lot in the final for some reason they had him playing outwide and cutting in instead of parking him behind the striker and making his movements from there

Gareth is too scared of that kind of a formation because it will drag Rice and Phillips out of position of basically being his make shift center backs and as a result expose Stones and Maguire. It was so obvious and Italy took 100% advantage of it, England basically played with 6 defenders in that final. There were not enough players in midfield to push the team forward because half of England's midfield was covering the defence.
This worked very well against smaller teams and a poor Germany because Kane bossed them in midfield and basically ran the show and single handedly dragged the team forward.
Italy knew they just needed to silence Kane and the others would fall. Italy had the quality to do so and the rest was history!
Points to take home... against a quality team you cannot depend on your hermit crab defence to do the job! You will need to take your chances even if it means leaving yourself exposed! Sadly, I don't think Southgate will be willing to expose his hermit crab defence because the moment he does that and lose the media will slaughter him and his players! It is a horrible cycle.

Heck, anyone who is a regular penalty taker at even Sunday league level understand the importance of 'feeling the ball' before taking a penalty. After all, there is a reason why even before a match begins, players come out 30 mins before the game to warm up with the ball, and get a feel and touch for the ball before the game starts, yet a lone, before a penalty!

Exactly, literally anyone who’s ever played the sport at any level knows this. Pros are not some rare breed that don’t need any sort of proper contact with the ball in a different environment… practice is not a cup match finals. So many factors so much pressure makes no sense at all… why take the risk and put that burden on them when England had endurance enough to drag the game out since holding their first point played so passively…. the guys on the field weren’t so fatigued that they couldn’t take them… like come on. Also this whole debate as mentioned just takes away from the key issue of Southgate’s plan in the first place… if you don’t have some penalty kicker god with that kind of experience in the first place, why even plan for that endgame? Makes no sense…. and the bullsh*t those players now have to deal with…. what a waste of a solid team and a solid opportunity.
