“Do you have time to hang out?” “I actually don’t, I have a final and I already took 2 days out to come here and I’ve spent 4 hours waiting on set for it to be my turn to come in to sell this”
I love that on the 1895 proof Morgan that they never really gave the actual reason why it’s worth so much money. I know most of you aren’t avid coin collectors but the 1895 proof Morgan was not a low mintages proof. 880 mintaged on a proof Morgan is about average maybe slightly below average. What makes this coin so valuable is that the Philadelphia mint did not make any regular struck coins in 1895 and the proof example was the only one to come from the Philadelphia mint. This is why it’s so valuable. I have a 1901 proof Morgan in about the same grade (NGC Proof 64 but with no Cameo) and it is worth probably $4000-$5000 retail. The mintage on my coin is 813 which is even less than the 1895 for reference.
There are a few reasons why. 1) It dates back to 1895. 19th century coins are pretty valuable, especially if they're silver and in such good condition. 2) It's proof. Proof coins by default are minted to be of significantly higher quality because they're made for collectors. 3) Only 880 were minted. Which by coin standards is an insanely low amount. And that'll get smaller with time. And 4) American coins are ALWAYS overpriced since they're the most widely collected coins.
@@pierrebegley2746 you are right but for the 1895 the main reason why it is so expensive is because they did not make a regular struck Philadelphia minted 1895 Morgan dollar that year. Anyone who wants to complete the Morgan dollar set with all mints needs this coin. Most proof Morgans are worth $2000-$5000 in lower grades but the 1895 is worth $40000+ in any grade.
