    The chronicles of that time wondered why King Enrique never visited the queen and yet always made himself surrounded by young knights. That's why no one believed that Juana was his daughter. Greetings from a castilian. One important topic to understand the Isabela's mind was that she was grown almost in jail. Isabela and her mother were confined in a castle when king Juan died because Enrique didn't like the 2nd marriage of his father. That, in my opinion, shaped the personality of Isabela and explains many things about her behabiour.

    This was such a great video! I can't wait to listen to the rest of the series. Isabella of Castile is such an interesting historical figure and oversaw so many events in Spanish and world history. She certainly seemed to have a very strong personality and sense of self. Just a small quibble, the kingdom of Castile had at least two queens regnant (crowned in their own right) during the middle ages: Urraca of Leon, who was queen of Leon, Castile, and Galicia in the early eleventh century, and Berenguela of Castile who ruled Castile with her son, Fernando III, in during the thirteenth century. Again, I really loved the video and can't wait for more!

    • @evaschubert1
      @evaschubert1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes I had heard of these earlier queens who ruled with sons or as widows. I will look up Urraca though. It seems Castile was more willing to have female rulers than most other kingdoms who involved the Salic laws of male succession.

      Gracias por tomarse todo este tiempo para investigar sobre Isabel I de Castilla. Efectivamente, como se dice en el comentario anterior, en los reinos hispánicos (excepto Aragón) se daban dos conceptos importantes en cuanto a la legitimación a la conona: potestas y regnum. Las infantas heredarán ambas, pero solian delegar la postestas en un varón porque implicaba la dirección de las tropas (pero la mujer sigue teniendo el derecho de regnum).

      (repost) ... (repost) ... Muslim Europe, Mexico & Latin America? … Stopped by the Passion of one woman.
      Count your blessings! … If not for Queen Isabel we - most of Europe, and definitely all the Americas - would be Muslim; decked out in burkas, hijabs, thawabs, and Sharia Law! ... And I'm Sephardic!
      ... After Jesus Christ, Isabel may be the MOST Consequential Figure in History. .. By expelling Muslims from Spain, and thus erasing Islam's key foothold in Europe - AND any future claim! - she saved Christian Europe from being swallowed up by Islam. Charles Martel of France repelled Muslim advance deep into Europe at Tours in 732, and Isabel in 1492 expelled the entire, and main, European Muslim civilization of consequence! One entrenched in Spain for nearly 700 years; with cities such as Granada & Sevilla as the largest and most advanced in Europe.
      ... Also, her successful Vision of Spain not just as a World Empire (with her Columbus Expeditions), but much more importantly as 'Defender of the Faith' - Ensured that ALL of Latin America (and the Philippines) became and remained Christian, and never Muslim; … This CREED also saved Europe from Islam by stopping the Ottoman Empire’s takeover of the Mediterranean with victory at the Naval Battle of Lepanto in 1571.
      … Not bad for one resented by the MAJORITY of the Nobility, AND the Church (who forced her to cut her ties with her Jewish financiers and advisors) … for usurping her brother Enrique’s plan for the throne - instead of becoming a nun! (Great biography - 'Isabella: The Warrior Queen' by Kirstin Downey.)

    Dear Miestra Schubet: Your historical podcasts are so facsinating that I had to get a small notebook to keep track of your podcasts. They are clear, logical & fascinating. I think I am done with the "European Religious Wars" or at least need to take a break from them as they are intense. I was educated pre-internet and in the university, the internet was so primitive, it was only used for email. Now, if I were a student, I would not want to relay totally on your podcasts to pass a class & have a more complete understanding. However, your podcasts are great to give basic background before getting into the historical & sociological details from the text. Thank you so very much. /s/ Old Man

Most of the writings, videos or publications try to belittle Spain and to build half-truths or lies about us. I am about to subscribe and see what comes out of this. I would only need to see you put the truth of what happened with respect to the "Felicísima Armada" and my eyes would pop out of my face.

    You are totally correct. Europe under the Catholic Church was Patriarchal. I am a white male who loves history. Women in history have been leaders and motivators all the way back to mythological times. Greek Mythology has the earth as Gia. The Mother. Titans and Gods had females plus many more. Norse Mythology had the same. Mythology became history and religion. Women were a great part of it but got little or no respect. My niece who I helped raise always said she was a princess when she was 6-12 years old. I explained that 1. The US has no royalty, and 2. Princesses were used to marry for political reasons, create alliances, and make heirs, often by proxy to total strangers. Great video. You are quite wise.

Aragon was another kingdom just as Portugal was although they did share a lot more similarities with Aragon than with Portugal.

      Yes absolutely. I try to mention that “Spain” was a term that came into use later, but I do use the term from time to time to anchor listeners in something familiar, as few have heard of Castile.

      España es Hispania. Castilla y Aragon y Portugal estan en Hispania. Provincia Romana. Otra cosa son los reinos y condados, etc que conforman Hispania. 😊 En Francia, Aquitania, Alsacia, Vascongadas, Rosellon, Cerdaña etc, no eran Francia.

    Isabel made great achievements indeed being a female ruler in the late middle ages when men were dominant ,
    however i like to think that the vast majority of muslims in Andalusia were Arabs not Moorish ( the rulers and the knights and elite ) and i don't say that because im arab .

    Well, being Middle Eastern, you should know the Arabs grabbed the Knowledge from those regions they conquered. Those were in Mesopotamia, which were the Assyrians which in very Aramaic (the language they spoke) meant "The Beginning". The Assyrians created the CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION. Arabs conquered those people, but that was because those regions still belonged to Assyrians. They couldn't convert them because they were Christians, and were resilient. Even the Maronites who are an extension of Assyrians and Phoenicians had constant civil wars against Arabs who are Muslims. They spread this false information that they are "Arab Christians" because people like Saddam Hussein, and other Arab Muslims. Especially those Kurds who came from what is called Afghanistan want to erase the indigenous people . Historically the Assyrians gave the first Laws, the Laws of Hammurabi, and the first steel, and wheel , even beer etc.... The Assyrians are prophetically going to be reclaiming their lands. just like the Jews, and Indigenous Egyptians, who are NOT Arabs, but Nubians, will be the 3 nations returning from Diaspora to their indigenous lands. In Isaiah, the chosen people, the Jews were the recent and first people returning from Diaspora, the Assyrians the first converts into Christianity, and are found still all over the world shall be 2nd, and thirdly, the Nubians. It is found in Isaiah chapter 19. The very word Astronomy was derived from Assyria. Arabs haven't done anything just steal as always. lol Romans and Greeks took everything from these ancient peoples, and added to it. That is why our founding fathers in America, took from all these great people, and created our constitution!!!
