    I thought the first chord was actually a "Bill Evans chord" first used in "So What." Great video, thanks

    good stuff here. I have always played that 'so what' voicing but i havent done the variation with all perfect fourths

    • @jazzpianoschool
      @jazzpianoschool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment, Dan. Indeed, the variations give so many different options and versatility. Happy practicing!

      @@jazzpianoschool I have a doubt, am I wrong or these are not all perfect fourths as @Dan Hicks writes? When you play the chord starting from Eb the first interval is an augmented fourth and the highest interval is a minor third. In fact, if you had to maintain the same intervals (4th+4th+4th+major 3rd) you couldn't be able to respect the grades of dorian mode. Am I right?
      I just want to learn things well, not a criticism

    If you forget how it sounds or want to transpose by ear easily just think if it as the the first 5 strings you play when tuning guitar 😈

    I've been playing music on one instrument or another (mainly guitar, but also bass and keyboards) since the mid-70s, but am only now trying heavily to delve into jazz piano. And, regrettably, playing as usual as I've always played-mainly by ear with a large working (but not playing) knowledge of theory.
    And one thing I've always done on keyboard, regrettably, is play just octaves in the bass, with tetrads (four-note groupings, one finger more than a triad) in the right hand. I don't know why I do that but it’s probably because my early formation imitating Elton John, whom as we all know is a formidable jazz pianist.
    But could I take this lesson and adapt it, by still playing the octaves in the bass and doing four-fingered chords with the right hand? Mentally I've tried to imagine myself doing what you're doing except my way-and I know that there is a reason that *your* way is better than *my* way-because I guess if it weren't then McCoy Tyner must have been doing it all wrong.

      Hi Kamakiri: thanks for the question. As far as trying to play modal voicings like McCoy Tyner, I would suggest sticking to 4th voicings (chords built in 4ths). So that would lead you to 3 note voicings, if with one hand, unless you can stretch a 10th to make it 4 notes with one hand. Quartal harmony gives you a much more open sound and it can mask the tonal center and be used to create tension or resolution more effectively. Hope this helps!

    • @kamakirinoko
      @kamakirinoko 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it helps! Are there any particular tunes you can point to where these types of chords are being played so I can "hear them in action," so to speak?

    • @AyinVillagra
      @AyinVillagra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Footprints by Wayne Shorter. It's in Cm so you can use the chords just as they appear in this video for most of the tune. So What is also a popular one.

    Using those in Eolian Context is always a tricky one. How do you go about it?

    • @jazzpianoschool
      @jazzpianoschool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mathieu: thanks for the question. Aeolian you mean? I would suggest for minor, just sticking to Dorian mode as opposed to aeolian mode.
