As for families on board ship, I think you forgot how big the universe is. Even traveling at the speed of light, a mission can take years to complete. Best to take your loved ones with you.
It was a shock when they killed Tasha but they did it well. She is referenced a few times later. They're good episodes so I'm sure your fan suggestions will pick them out for you. They all grow a lot through the series. It's hard having you skip through it; there's a lot of history and growth that they build up, but there are lots of really good "stand alone" episodes too.
If you didn’t watch the 3rd episode of season 1, you wouldn’t know that Data and Lt Yar had a sexual relationship that made them deep friends, and it changed Data. That’s why he was confused at actually “missing” someone. His relationship with Tasha made him more human, which is his goal.

Cassie didn't seem to catch on that Michael Dorn (Worf in TNG) was the lawyer defending Kirk / McCoy in ST VI: The Undiscovered Country. Most Trekkie fans knew because the ST: TNG series crossed over with the TOS Movies for a few years.
Deforest Kelley sadly passed not long after this aired. However you may see some familiar faces in episodes to come. Q is a pain, but his appearances are usually to teach the crew something important, and prepare them for what lies ahead
I was at my first posting at an Air Force Base in New Mexico when "Star Trek: The Next Generation" started. All of us were apprehensive about whether we would like this new series. However, it finally found it's place in our hearts.
"This is the Star Trek that I remember my dad watching when I was a kid." I mean... I was also a kid at that time, but this still makes me feel incredibly old.
As Gene Roddenberry was at the helm of the early seasons of The Next Generation (TNG), he wanted stories that were standalone, much like most of The Original Series (TOS). So he really didn't want a cliffhanger at the end of the first season. It wasn't until his death, that the series had serialized episodes and story line arcs.
at the time story archs were kind of new thing to TV. and roddnberry was ceratinly old school. even then shows that did introduce story arcs, tended to keep the arcs self contained inside a few episodes ... Then Babylon 5 came along ajnd changed every thing. where the show definitely had a time line story arc and you had to watch them in order. now most shows do this. and it's all thanks to B5 showing every one that it could be done and be successful.
@@HuntingViolets oh make no mistake ... B5's contribution to TV story writing is not something i was praising or condemning. it completely changed story telling in TV , and was an amazing show for what it did ... but at the same time there's a lot to be said for serialized story telling. and it's kind of sad that EVERY show today followes the "big story" style of writing. Not every thing has to be a massive epic and i think TV has lost it's charm in the fact that it used to be the place to get away from epic story telling. it was kind of relaxing to just have something fun and short that is quick to get into and quick to get out of. For that B5 has kinda cursed TV writing. PS and yes it most certainly is the reason old shows do well on streaming. not every one wants to get into a mind bending emotion riveted Epic story .. after slogging through 8-12 hours a work every day.
@@DenverStarkey No, I didn't mean to suggest you were. I like both arcs and standalones (and series that can do both). I at least like some memory to the standalones (as in, things that don't contradict previous episodes -- old sitcoms were great for contradictions). Yes, I miss longer episode runs too. There's room to focus on different characters sometimes and embrace things that happens somewhat organically, which is more difficult with things set in stone.
@@DenverStarkey The more we hear about stories from the Roddenberry era of Trek, had he lived longer, even series such as DS9 would've suffered the fate of not being able to be serialized. And so much for Roddenberry's newer baby, TNG, so much for the arcs of the Klingons and the Borg. It seemed that the only things he wanted to go further initially was Q and the Ferengis, who I'm sad to say, Roddenberry botched. Thankfully the DS9 writers salvaged that race and made them credible.
13:56 Mark! After August 13th of 1987, until 2004 or 2005, I was able to go to conventions. Sometimes, an episode of the first "Star Trek" animated cartoon series would be shown via a reel-to-reel film projector. Ah was wondering why I this video showed up in my feed but was slightly different. I get why copyright checks are in place but wish they were more relaxed. The studios in their infinite short sightedness don't seem to understand that fan-based videos--whether reactions or fan fiction--are a GOOD thing for their franchises.
Denise Crosby / Lt. Yar had so much potential as a character. I was so sad when her character was killed off. Data's reaction is one of the most precious moments in TNG.
I too was disappointed back then. Only later I came to the conclusion that Yar really was a useless character and writing her out was the right thing to do.
@@disobedientdolphin I really prefer Worf as security chief, it makes more sense than Tasha. On the other hand, the narrative with the Enterprise C was one of my favorites.
She chose to leave the show and character so 🤷🏻♂️ but at least they had a interesting story - episode out of it all 😯 She wasn’t killed off but chose to walk away - a BIG mistake all things considered.
Hey Cassie, do you remember when I was recommending this Other Canadian TH-camr who reacts to movies and shows who I thought you too Should possibly meet and react to movies together.? Well, right now she is also reacting to Star Trek next generation episodes and her last video that she released was her reaction to season 2 episode 10 ,I think. But. Her name is Jen Murray.
The Next Generation is set roughly 100 years after TOS. In the TOS movies you got to see Enterprises NCC 1701 - NCC 1701 B. This is the Enterprise NCC 1701 D. Ricard is priceless. You managed to mash up the captain and first mates names so effortlessly. The theme song is pretty much the theme from The Motion Picture.
Picard is very stern, but has a heart of gold! You’ll definitely love him more as time goes on, and Riker is absolutely the “smolderer” in this series lol. Q is a great villain, he’s so smarmy and gross, he’s easy to hate 😂 Data is my favorite by far, he provides a ton of comic relief throughout the series as he copes with learning how to “fit in” with humans.
For gods sake please make sure you watch Best of Both Worlds part 1-2 end of season 3 beginning season 4 which was the biggest cliff hanger of the series. Im sure the patrons will vote for it because its essential for the series, other series of Star Trek and the second STTNG movie.
Love the way Q "tests" them and basically hands them the answer on a silver platter. The problem is they don't see the clues in front of them, proving Q's point.
I know you have been having a hard time with Trek episodes lately and I just wanna say we appreciate you powering through it! I love watching someone become a true trekkie before my eyes!!!
Allot of the fans felt Star Trek: The Next Generation only found its feet in season 3. There was a new confidence and a new energy in season 3. The episodes were well written and produced and got better and better. Star Trek TNG went on for 7 seasons with 4 movies to follow. Not bad for a show that was originally cancelled after 3 seasons.
Did you happen to notice that they changed the intro from "where no man has gone before" to "where no one has gone before". Star Trek stands for progress for all people, not just men!
Even after all these decades, TNG is one of the few franchise shows that ISN'T a remake or a prequel. 😉 It's like many of these franchises are scared to continue onward into their future.
The Romulans were never our friends. The Romulans are the Federation's oldest enemy. The threat of the Romulans is the reason the Federation was formed.
The actor who played L.Q. Sonny Clemonds in "The Neutral Zone" is Leon Rippy, who you previously have seen in The Patriot. He is also known for his roles on the TV shows Saving Grace and Deadwood. He's a very underrated character actor, but he's great in everything I've ever seen him in.
A friend of mine and I discussed the differences between OS and NG, and we agreed that the OS was like the wild west out in space and all about "Draw out your phasers FAST!" whereas NG was about expanding your minds and seek out all possibilities of existence. Edit: and it's "DAY-TAH," not "DAAA-TAH."
The saucer seperation was seldom done in the series and the reason there are families onboard was because Gene Roddenberry thought that one of the problems about military service was that too often service members had to leave their families behind and the Enterprise was supposed to be going on a very deep space mission and wouldn't be back for a very long time. Problem was the Enterprise hung out close to home an awful lot.
53:36 Mark! Oh wow! Yahoo! 🎉 Another "DOOL" viewer! 😊 Then you recognized John de Lancie as having played "Eugene Bradford"? That character invented Time Travel in the series! 😎
Brent Spiner is very good at playing both Starfleet Officer Data and psychopath Lore. Worf is a Klingon, but he was orphaned at a young age and adopted by human parents. He had a difficult childhood and is still a little awkward talking to people about anything other than his job, that is why he is sounding a bit like Spock. At this stage they have various people that seem to be serving as chief engineer, later Geordi LaForge takes on that role. Patrick Stewart is an English actor playing a French character in an American show. A brownout is a loss or restriction of electrical power.
Is there some reason no one is mentioning the 2-parter "Best of Both Worlds"? The entire global demographic of sci-fi fans held their breath for an entire off season.
Romulans appeared in a couple of episodes of the Original Series; at that time they had already fought a war with the Federation, but since none had ever surrendered and they never took prisoners, no one in the Federation had ever actually seen them. It was a big reveal that they are related to Vulcans, but they're like Vulcans before they developed their philosophy of logic and tolerance.
"Everybody has their needs met and there is no disease" sums up why (most) of the first three seasons were lackluster. It's all very nice to imagine Utopia.... but it is not conducive to dramatic story-telling. It wasn't until the introduction of the Borg and Picard becoming more "Kirk-like" that the show really found its footing. I think they were trying too hard in the first seasons to make everyone all respect and admire each other... no real conflict between them. Data and Worf at least had internal conflict. And Patrick Stewart had such great power in his voice that he kept you intrigued. Frankly, Tasha, Troi and Wesley were the real weak elements in the first 2-3 seasons. When you get to Season 3, you might consider watching all the episodes in order... even if it takes you a year or two to get through them. There is a thru-line to the episodes which may not make as much sense if you watch them piecemeal. My 2¢ OF course, I think you should go back and watch ALL of TOS. It is still unmatched.
True, Wesley, troi, and Tasha were kind of a drag. Ironically she may love these characters. Every time I see Wesley I just wish they would beam him to the sun.
If you have ever read, or seen Stephen King's short story "The Raft", in his collection of stories "Skeleton Crew", or the film "Creepshow 2", there is a similar blob, or slick.
5:12 "I Totally Remember That Guy,From When My Dad Watched It" That character was Worf, and the actor who played him, Michael Dorn, played the Klingon defense attorney for Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy in "Star Trek VI:The Undiscovered Country" It was supposed to be written into this series that Worf was the grandson and namesake of Michael Dorn's character in Star Trek VI
It's true. I watched Generations with someone who'd only seen odd episodes once, and she was completely lost, because the movie doesn't explain *anything*. It was then that I realized she'd have needed to see Brothers, and Descent 1 & 2 to understand certain story points, and Redemption 1 & 2 to understand others. And watching *those* episodes would require seeing I Borg, Silicon Avatar, Datalore, many many Worf episodes, many Borg episodes, etc etc. TNG had more story arcs than people realize. It just didn't have those arcs running concurrently. And Star Trek Generations references a metric ton of them with no concept that maybe movie-goers might not have seen the TV show. The only Trek shows where I think the pick n mix approach works well are TOS and Voyager.
Watched all these the first time around, watching again so you know how much we appreciate you! Don't let CBS get you down, this really is a great show! That being said, there may be a few more seasons where you need to do 5 episodes... not that you should, but that you really need to. So trust your people if they suggest this! ❤

I always thought it was ironic that Bones was depicted as the last surviving member of the original crew and Kirk was the first to die in the movies, while in real life, DeForest Kelly was the first to pass away and William Shatner will probably be the last (or George Takei).
I normally always skip season one and most of season two whenever I re-watch this series. But eventually the show does find it's way and it's just as great as the original series, if not better.
The interesting thing about the "Neutral Zone" episode - were the actors outside of the main cast. For instance, 1 of the actors playing a Romulan - also played Gul Dukat from Star TreK: Deep Space Nine is Marc Alaimo. The other is the actor playing the cryo-frozen country singer guy. He plays a LOT of bit parts, but you may recognize him from The Patriot (Mel Gibson movie) the bad guy in Kuffs and many other movies. His name is Leon Rippy. There are SO many famous and semi-famous actors playing guest roles in the show it's really cool.

These really are not very good episodes except the last one. Q gets better but the second Q episode in season 1 "Hide & Q" I was not crazy about. All the following Q episodes are very good though. For season 2 my picks would be, "Elementary, Dear Data", "Pen Pals", "Q Who" & "Up the Long Ladder". I tear up watching "Pen Pals". Four really is not enough though. Love all your reactions. What until you see Mr. Riker perform his alpha "Riker maneuver" on the ship's chairs.

It was a shock when they killed Tasha but they did it well. She is referenced a few times later. They're good episodes so I'm sure your fan suggestions will pick them out for you.
They all grow a lot through the series.
It's hard having you skip through it; there's a lot of history and growth that they build up, but there are lots of really good "stand alone" episodes too.
skin of evil hits harder when you know the lore around natasha yar, .. data and tasha even hat a night together
Yeah. I was a little bummed she didn't watch that episode. It was pretty funny
If you didn’t watch the 3rd episode of season 1, you wouldn’t know that Data and Lt Yar had a sexual relationship that made them deep friends, and it changed Data. That’s why he was confused at actually “missing” someone. His relationship with Tasha made him more human, which is his goal.
Data’s insistence to bring the frozen 20th Century people back had the passion of Lore
1:19:50 Mark! A point of order here! That ship is no mere "cruise ship"! She's an "ocean liner"! They are built for crossing oceans, not just cruising coast lines! ⚓️
Encounter at Farpoint aired in 1987 and DeForest Kelley passed in 1999. 12 years is more than just 'not long after'.
For me it was definitely a love/haye relationship with Q.
I was at my first posting at an Air Force Base in New Mexico when "Star Trek: The Next Generation" started.
All of us were apprehensive about whether we would like this new series.
However, it finally found it's place in our hearts.

@@DenverStarkey Although I love a good story arc, that may be one reason older, longer series do better on streaming.

The audiences laughed every time the animation cell "Insert Commercial Here!" appeared! The wording was hand drawn, not just handwritten.😎
You might recognize Colm Meaney (The curly haired guy) from Con Air. He played the DEA agent with the fancy car.
"that'll make sense when I'm older.." 😂😂😂
The main theme was re-used from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, by the late-great Jerry Goldsmith.
Season 1 is a lot of them figuring out what they are as a tv show. and learning how to interact with each other.
I wish you were doing more than 4-5 per season. There's so many great episodes of TNG and you're only getting about 1/6th of the experience this way.
Though most of the great episodes were post season 2. Until season 3, I think Pop should just pick "the best" episodes.
Agreed. The entire series is worthy. But I'll take what I can get
“The Measure of a Man” is a good one she will miss I think.

Ah was wondering why I this video showed up in my feed but was slightly different. I get why copyright checks are in place but wish they were more relaxed. Denise Crosby / Lt. Yar had so much potential as a character. I was so sad when her character was killed off. Data's reaction is one of the most precious moments in TNG.
I wonder if anyone claims to be the one who did the makeup when she died? That splotch ..

I too was disappointed back then. Only later I came to the conclusion that Yar really was a useless character and writing her out was the right thing to do.

Hey Cassie, do you remember when I was recommending this Other Canadian TH-camr who reacts to movies and shows who I thought you too Should possibly meet and react to movies together.? Picard is very stern, but has a heart of gold! You’ll definitely love him more as time goes on, and Riker is absolutely the “smolderer” in this series lol. Q is a great villain, he’s so smarmy and gross, he’s easy to hate 😂 Data is my favorite by far, he provides a ton of comic relief throughout the series as he copes with learning how to “fit in” with humans.
It's been a long time since i got the box set and watched all of TNG, i forgot this is how it started, what a crazy introduction to the show.

Roddenberry wanted little to no connection to the 1960s show. Very canny of him.
34:07 Mark! He asked for the cameo as insurance or assurance against being killed off in a movie or, worse, off screen! 😎
I watched and shared the original posts. I'll watch and share again to support your S.T. journey. Love the show, love your reactions.

My 2¢
OF course, I think you should go back and watch ALL of TOS. It is still unmatched.
True, Wesley, troi, and Tasha were kind of a drag. Ironically she may love these characters. Every time I see Wesley I just wish they would beam him to the sun.

"I Totally Remember That Guy,From When My Dad Watched It"
That character was Worf, and the actor who played him, Michael Dorn, played the Klingon defense attorney for Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy in "Star Trek VI:The Undiscovered Country"
It was supposed to be written into this series that Worf was the grandson and namesake of Michael Dorn's character in Star Trek VI
Worf, son of Mogh, son of Worf
Also, Michael Dorn has been on more Trek episodes and movies than any actor in the history of the franchise to date.
It's always funny to me that they held Tasha's funeral in a Windows desktop picture.
4 or 5 episodes per season will never fill the "WTF" gap ... LOL. Simply not possible.
I noticed these taken down and worried you'd been discouraged or something. Thank you for finding a way to put them back up Cassie!
Season 1 just wasn't good. But fortunately for all of us, each season got better.
Watched all these the first time around, watching again so you know how much we appreciate you! Don't let CBS get you down, this really is a great show!
That being said, there may be a few more seasons where you need to do 5 episodes... not that you should, but that you really need to. So trust your people if they suggest this! ❤

The difference is that old school shows had designated points for the breaks. Now, the ads pop up at random places on videos, movies and shows.

I understand why you were advised to do the episode where Tasha dies and the one that explains Data's origins but they just are not their best episodes in season one. I like it better when you do it alone because you talk to us. When you're with your sister you talk to your sister.
