What a great idea, having the big screen down in the auditorium, so that the audience could see the performance as well as hear it. My father, who was an organist, sometimes took me to organ concerts on the rare occasions that they were given here, when I was a child. And to be quite honest, as a child, I found them dead boring, because there was nothing to see. The organist was tucked away wherever the console was in the church, and usually difficult if not impossible to see. The recital may as well have been on the radio. And I enjoyed this performance. It brought tears to my eyes, as it reminded me very much of my father, and his passion and love for the organ and organ music.
One of the best renditions of this wonderful work that I've ever heard. Only the great organists can do what she does, make organ music sing with hardly any apparent deviation from evenness of touch and tempo. And she's only 22 years old here, I think?

God, I don't talk to you nearly as much as I should, but I want to thank you for giving us Mr. Bach. He has been an inspiration my whole life, and was truly a gift from you, showing us briefly what it must be like to be in your presence. Thank you also for Maria. This is now my favorite recording of BMV 582, surpassing E Power Biggs (which is saying something)! IMHO, the organ at Herve is one of the greatest, with sweet/full/clear voices, and apparently in remarkable condition. Maria, please post more, and whether/where we can purchase your recordings. Thank you for playing with passion, for understanding the harmonic depth and beauties buried in Bach's work, and for not playing like you need to catch a bus in the next 5 minutes (like some do!). Heaven on earth would be to listen to you perform this or other works from Bach on an organ such as this one. I wish for you a long career as an organist!
Same here! Power Biggs used to be my standard, but it feels a bit too sterile compared to this young lady's more lively interpretation. Could also be the older sound recording techniques playing a part in Mr. Biggs loosing out.

The performance is perfect. The Tempo in this interpretation is faster than what some of us are use to, but this is at the discretion of the artist. Even Rachmaninoff played HIS OWN COMPOSITIONS FASTER than what most concert pianists of the day, and since, would play them. We have no idea how fast Bach would have personally played this composition.

If the phrase "Long phrasing" means what I think it does, I believe that it is probably a significant factor in the appreciation of Bach for a first time listener, and especially in this work (and other works, with similar rhetoric). The enormous increase in the appreciation of Bach music in the 70's could be attributed to their being taken much faster than they had been a couple of decades earlier. Of course, that detracts from the essential solemnity of some of the pieces, such as, in fact, this one, which inevitably suffers as a result of speeding up. Ms. Vekilova somehow finds a good compromise, IMO. Not varying the registration seems to help.

Nice performance, clear and with a lot of emphasis on the musical ideas within the piece. A bit more of stop variation would have been beneficial, though, but the playing is high quality. What I can't really stand is the headbagging and tarantula-bitten movements - in a piece as complex as this every useless movement is a source of distraction. Also the public need not be distracted by the player's behaviour, on the contrary the player should transfer his personality to the music itself. It is like she needs to demonstrate that she "feels" the music beyond her own performance, a convincement sadly typical of many modern-era performers and which adapts much better to a showman or circus manager than a valued musician like she is.

I, too, was a little taken aback by what you call the 'head-banging.' But as I began to appreciate the intensity and the vehemence of Ms. Velikova's playing, I began to see that it was relatively restrained. We're probably never going to agree on this point. As casual listeners (of Bach) become more aware of the intense---but to some extent hidden--- emotion in Bach's instrumental music, they, and we, will perhaps be more forgiving of some of the ways in which performers deal with the expressive limitations of the organ.
