When I was working at the airport in Las Vegas, one of my co-worker and I saw these college students from BYU (all guys) getting in line for security and we noticed they were carrying pink bags. We asked them what’s up with that and they told us that they were Psychology majors and the people who steals bag will most likely not want to steal because the color pink is too noticeable versus a black bag. Ever since, I always buy an off-color bags like my roller back pack is turquoise color.
Adding the Apple Air Tag has already found my bag during a travel nightmare of cancelled flights out of Newark. My bag didn’t make the flight out that I was able to and the airline tried to tell me it had but they lost it. I was able to show them on my iPhone it was still in Newark. From that they had the ground crew there check and they found it. They then sent it on the next flight. They next day I knew it was at my home airport before they even contacted me.
I travel as a photographer all over the world. Here are my tips: 1) Use Pelican hard cases for all checked luggage - they are indestructible and waterproof - wait until your luggage gets left in the rain and you’ll understand! 2) Use zip ties not locks! Airport security will just cut off TSA locks - they are a joke! 3) Put AirTags in All bags including carry on! 4) Put contact information on decals on the outside and inside of all luggage! I lost a Pelican 1560 off the back of a 4WD in the high sierras last week - got everything back ($$$) within 24 hours - a few scratches on the case but everything inside was perfect! AirTags + Pelican saved me thousands of dollars! 👍
Having handled luggage for a major airline, I would recommend against the type of luggage tag you suggested. Those belt buckle style closures failed more than any other type. Two is a good idea. I use the rubberized ones that can hold a printed card that come with a strong rubberized loop that is looped through the tag and luggage handle. Further, on the tags on the outside, I would only put your cell phone number and name. Addresses on the outside help nobody and may inform baggage handlers of the address of someone likely not to be at home currently. This has been used in the pass for home thefts. I can't remember how many late bags showed up where I worked that only had the home phone number, big help when you're on vacation! I also use a colorful luggage strap to help ID my bags.
I was worried about my tag coming off, so I used super glue to secure the buckle. Hard as a rock now, but not going anywhere. Glue is helpful if you already bought one that is flimsy.
Do you have any recommendations for sturdy luggage you saw that did not come apart while you were handling luggage? I bought a cheaper Coollife set from Amazon but have no idea if they will last
we buy really bright duct tape - fav is neon yellow - put a big X on the large sides and a single piece on the smaller sides so that no matter which side is up when coming off the plane the bright tape can be seen.
I always double check the airline’s tag to ensure the destination is correct. We’ve had situations where on a multi-leg flight the final destination was not on the tag.
When I get a new bag I use a stencil and paint to apply a big flower (or pattern) to each side of my bag. A black bag with a bright flower stencil on it really stands out from all the other black bags on the baggage claim belt. Once a bag got lost and I think the airport staff found it quickly because I was able to tell them it also had two big pink flowers on each side.
Very useful tips in this video. Thanks! One other thing: I always include inside my checked luggage, in a very visible place, a copy of my itinerary that also includes my contact information.
I'm so glad you posted a video on checked luggage. There are far too many people posting about carry-on luggage when there are those of us that NEED to use checked. I, for example, fly to Europe annually for a month. The European carriers are very restrictive for carry-ons (size, weight or both) and because of my extended stay a small carry-on only won't do.
I've seen a trick where people put colored/themed duct tape on their luggage to help distinguish it from other bags, although I would not necessarily want to do that with the high-end luggage you use. Picking any color other than black definitely helps too. I stopped locking my luggage years ago because of increased frequency of random search, but I will still put a small zip tie on to help keep the zipper shut. The trick there is to put the zip tie on backwards (inside out) so it doesn't lock in place but instead slides easily back and forth, which also makes it reusable. Another great video, Megan. Keep up the good work!
5:08 I love the idea of making my bags as unique as possible. I try to buy luggage in an unusual color to make it easier to identify but lately I have been getting my bags wrapped for any international trips which make them look exactly like every other wrapped bag. The stickers are a great idea to make a wrapped bag look unique! Thank for that tip.
Great ideas. Also in the vein of don't buy cheap luggage, I decided to reconsider cheap tickets involving four different airports, multiple layovers and two or three diferent carriers and just go with one carrier with one layover in its home country. I bought my ticket directly with the carrier and not some fly-by-night consolidater. TBH, there are no guarantees with air service these days.
try to get a direct flight if there is one. It's easier for you (no layovers, no spending hours in an airport) and easier for your bags. That being said, the only time my bag failed to arrive was on a direct flight because the baggage handling system at the airport had broken down and they had let the plane go without any bags at all (that was fun, as everybody had to file a claim at the same time). Luckily it was on the way home so I didn't need anything in the bag immediately (and as an added plus, they brought the bag to my house so I didn't have to do that myself).
The ONLY way we were to retrieve our lost bag was the Apple AirTag. The 4 or 5 organizations that touched the bag….It took 3 weeks the AirTag and pre-check in photo was the ONLY reason we got it back. Thanks!

My recent experiences have led me to believe that you should always prepare to have your luggage delayed. Airlines try very diligently to get your luggage to your final destination but if there are weather issues or plane delays they really don't make much of an effort unless you push them to get your luggage to you in a timely fashion. You must make a claim with the airline immediately upon notice that your bag will not be on your flight to your destination or there is a delay. Put a claim in immediately and keep track of it until you receive your bag. Also, you can put in a request for a refund of the bag fee.
Hi Megan! I just came across your channel today, probably because I was googling for suitcase cover. Our brand new expensive luggage has a huge scratch on it after a recent flight. I instantly liked your channel. New subscriber 🙋🏻♀️
Thank you for this video! It was very useful. I’d also add that if you have an international layover, check with the front counter to see if you’ll need to reclaim your luggage at your layover. And some credit cards have baggage delay/lost luggage protections; it would help to see if your card has them and to familiarize yourself with their terms and conditions.

I've been using a few of those tricks, but it seems the best defense is to have a long layover. I went on a cruise out of Copenhagen earlier this month, and I understand 300 people arrived without bags due to issues in European airports. I had a five hour layover in Frankfurt, and my bag arrived with me, so I was set. On the way bag, I had an hour, 40 minutes in London Heathrow. I arrived back in Las Vegas; my bag didn't. It was delivered about 30 hours later. Fortunately, there was nothing I needed in it. My Airtags showed it as being in London, but I still had to wait until they stopped dropping bags at claim before I could take it up with the person on duty (another woman from the same cruise and route home also did not receive her bags). One thing I did was put a list of where the bag wanted to be for each date, and I used an online translator to put it in several languages (English, Danish, German, and French). Copies went in the plastic pouch with my ID tag (on the other side of that contact information), and inside my bag. They gave me a form instead of my bags, but when I got home and went online to fill it out, my bag was already listed as missing (the workers at Heathrow no doubt already had the bag and knew the plane was long gone). Surprisingly, it didn't allow me to upload a photo of my bag (which is VERY distinctive given the stickers on it), just a description. You can't really avoid lost bags; you can just take steps to maximize the chance of getting them quickly.
Another tip: take a photo of your bag purchase receipt. Turkish Airlines badly damaged my bag but got out of compensation because they said I had to provide a receipt of the value of the luggage.
Was a I given wrong info - I was always told not to buy hard shelled check on luggage. I rarely check on luggage except when moving my son to and from University. I just bought some luggage and was given the advise not to purchase hard shelled check on as it almost always gets loaded first due (comes out last) to how luggage compartments are designed.
I love your channel Megan. One of your viewers shared about a travel insurance card for U.S. citizens and I referred it to a friend as well. It is called Faye. Have a super day!
I just flew AA to Miami and they delayed my bags on the way there AND on the way home. The way home was a complete mess .... the WORST customer service at baggage claim at the BOI airport that I have EVER had. It did appear that many people had delayed luggage.
As an airline Customer Service Agent and Frequent Traveler I HIGHLY recommend you put your name and number on the outside and in the inside of your suitcase because I’ve seen bags get tagged with other peoples’ bag tags.
Great info, thanks! I'm usually a carry-on traveler but will be checking in a luggage next month to Dubai b/c I'm planning to buy stuff to bring back. Also, I end up checking in my carry-on bag anyway because by the time it's my turn to board..overhead bins are full so I'm giving it a try to Dubai. Just one big check in luggage and personal item to board. Thanks again!
To keep the suitcase shut stop by the dollar store and buy either a luggage strap or just use an old belt (punch a new hole to tighten it). Use 2, one lengthwise and the other way. Don't overpack it either. The ground crew isn't gentle.
Early this year I fly with Singapore airlines my luggage was lost show up in 4days after their, airline found it! Luckily I am coming home not going out, traveling.
Thank you for this video. It’s perfect because I am looking for a good quality check in luggage with a unique color😁 and also I just started making extra ID that I can put it inside my luggage😉
In addition to removing tags/barcodes/stickers from previous trips, they should be shredded as well. Your name appears on there and should not just be put into any random bin. I invested in the Air Tags. And I'm glad...luckily this time no incidents. But I'm still waiting for a lost bag over 2 months. Thanks #KLM! Don't fly with them. I filed a claim and there's no movement at all and all I get are boilerplate responses.
Megan, Thanks so much for all your amazing information. Can you give me a link to an ideal plug adapter for Spain that can handle charging Apple devices as well as a high power dual voltage hair flat iron?
My sisters packed lots of rolls of toilet paper inside a half full suitcase on a trip to France. It helps to take space, to be filled in the way back home (mostly chocolate!) and who wants to buy toilet paper in Euros, when one can buy them in Reals (Brazil)?
If I'm using packing cubes, I put an ID card in each, just in case the bag breaks open and they spill out. Weight tends to be more a factor than space for me, so a lite weight bag is most important.
Beacons may yet be a wonderful idea: If placed inside a baggage---would facilitate immediate discovery anywhere in the world should a misplacement occurs on transit ---though may not allowed by airlines---as becons are often times first tool of trade by operatives of nefarious activities.
Hello Megan, great videos. Can you lock your checked luggage with a padlock (if you don't have combination lock) or are you suppose to leave it accessible in case they need to check the contents? Thank you.
A great video and a detailed one.. thank you for sharing this.... . I'm sure these great tips would be of help to everyone. Unfortunately even after paying a high cost to airlines and airport taxes these guys are highly irresponsible... And we end up thinking and spending our hard earned money in further unnecessary stuff to ensure it's safe and secure.
My 2 year old only drinks liquid pediasure in a bottle. So whenever we go on trips I bring a case or two. Is it better to check in or carryon? I mean, if I check in a luggage, I always lose an item or 2. And in carryon luggage it’s always a hassle getting searched. But so far I have only been checking in his liquid pediasure and only bring a small milk bag with 6 ready feed liquid pediasure in it.
I added stickers to my bright blue baggage, added a Galaxy SmartTag tracker, took pictures and all... but I DID NOT put contact information INSIDE the bag. So... it is lost in Paris since May during my connecting flight back home. I think it lost its tag. The Air Company did their part and I received a refund, but all the stuff I bought during the trip was lost. It's a stress nobody deserves.
I keep a copy of our passport in all of our luggage, checked or carry-on. Not only it identifies witout any doubt our stuff but if we were to lose the passports, we can use the copy for an emergency one at the Embassy/consulate. Another way to identify the outside is do draw on it with sharpies. If you have children, let them have fun! Just make sure whatever is drawn remains family friendly. ;)
OMG NO! Never take the risk that someone can get a hold of anything having to do with your passport. If traveling with other people, have each person carry the other person's passport photocopy. It's unlikely that you will both have lost your passport and you'll have a back up with your companion. If alone, keep the paper copy in a RFID sleeve with your credit cards. If someone takes the passport, you still have a copy to take with you to the embassy. Also, take a photo of the passport face page, all your credit cards (with the back side as well) "just in case"
hello! I'm hooked to your channel! top content! where should I put my jewelry? checked bag or carry on? I'm scared the tsa say it's not prohibited and lose everything! xxx
We mostly do too, but it's so much easier said than done if you are an activities person. If my husband and I are travelling to a city like New York, London, Paris, etc. Yeah, we can both do carry ons. But we also ski in the winter and dive in the summer (other people bike internationally and bring all kinds of gear, etc). Try packing 5 days worth of clothes, shoes and toiletries as well as 2 sets of wetsuits, fins, snorkels or ski pants (we each rotate two pairs for a week long trip), ski boots, goggles any other ski equipment you may own. Carry on only is great, but not always possible in every situation ever and it's good to have tips on both sides. Having said that, for our upcoming dive trip, if our one shared checked bag is lost we can always rent whatever we lose (even expensive dive watches, which we will carry on, but if we didn't those can easily be rented as well), and same for ski gear, we can buy or rent at the destination, but for repeat activity people it's nice to have your own stuff and have the option to check bags, despite the HORROR some people make it out to be. The checked bag situation is currently a nightmare. I am 100% aware of that. But I'm still going to check my bag for this situation and handle whatever happens by being prepared for both outcomes (bag comes with us and is fine or bag is lost). Being ready for both scenarios takes a lot of pressure off because I know I'll have a blast no matter what and still be able to partake in our activities.

Not locking it seems like a bad idea. Just get a lock that is tsa approved and they will have a key that can unlock it.

Awesome tips thanks for sharing your thoughts and knowledge. Gosh you deserve more subscribers 💯🙏.
2:18 Very Very important tip. Never go for cheaper Luggage Bags.
Thank You 🙏🏻👌🏻👌🏻❤️
I've been using a few of those tricks, but it seems the best defense is to have a long layover.
Great information! I wish I would have found your channel back when I traveled a bunch for work.
Another tip: take a photo of your bag purchase receipt. Turkish Airlines badly damaged my bag but got out of compensation because they said I had to provide a receipt of the value of the luggage.
Thanks for this tip!! I'm sorry to hear about your luggage though
another great video lispy. I love how the Canucks use all of the hand gestures to animate the videos. 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
very great, tips, thanks for sharing. We gained some extra tips again, thanks a lot
Oh cool! I have not heard of this... time to Google! Thank you!
Business card is an excellent idea for identification purposes.
You shouldn’t give tourist dollars to a country that subjugates all women as second class people. Including tourists.
@@catherinesparling6639 Then, we'd all be staying home. I prefer to travel.
Thank you! Great ideas!! 👍🏾👍🏾💯
To keep the suitcase shut stop by the dollar store and buy either a luggage strap or just use an old belt (punch a new hole to tighten it). Use 2, one lengthwise and the other way. Don't overpack it either. The ground crew isn't gentle.
I’m moving and this helps. I’m packing an old laptop in the checked bag. It’s too heavy for the carry-on
Early this year I fly with Singapore airlines my luggage was lost show up in 4days after their, airline found it! Luckily I am coming home not going out, traveling.
Never fun to arrive without luggage! Glad to hear yours got back to you!
Thank you for this video. It’s perfect because I am looking for a good quality check in luggage with a unique color😁 and also I just started making extra ID that I can put it inside my luggage😉
I have worked at the airport for 20 years and fifty percent of passengers do not zip their luggage closed fully.
What are #KLM?
@@wendynguyen8296 It is the name of an airline based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands
As usual, fantastic video!!
Megan, Thanks so much for all your amazing information. Can you give me a link to an ideal plug adapter for Spain that can handle charging Apple devices as well as a high power dual voltage hair flat iron?
Great tips, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
My sisters packed lots of rolls of toilet paper inside a half full suitcase on a trip to France. It helps to take space, to be filled in the way back home (mostly chocolate!) and who wants to buy toilet paper in Euros, when one can buy them in Reals (Brazil)?
Very direct to the point, thank you ❤
Traveling to India from USA for wedding- any tips for packing multiple formal dresses?
30 Years ago, had a sticker that said "Live Snake inside". It was cute, but I would DEFINITELY not have one today. :D Bad idea.
These are some great tips! Thanks
If I'm using packing cubes, I put an ID card in each, just in case the bag breaks open and they spill out. Weight tends to be more a factor than space for me, so a lite weight bag is most important.
Great idea on putting ID in each cube!
I put my name, flight number and date on the visible side of my luggage tag. On the reverse of this card or paper I put an address sticker.
That recommended checked bag weighs in at around 12lb or 5.5kg. That’s a lot out of your over all checked baggage allowance (15kg/20kg/22kg).
Beacons may yet be a wonderful idea: If placed inside a baggage---would facilitate immediate discovery anywhere in the world should a misplacement occurs on transit ---though may not allowed by airlines---as becons are often times first tool of trade by operatives of nefarious activities.
Great tips - thank you so much 🇨🇦
Great Tips, looking forward to next week.
Can you use a luggage sleeve on the voyageur luggage or is it unable to go through the top because of the unique handle? Love the video!
Hi Megan.. love your video love ❤️ traveling
Hello Megan, great videos. Can you lock your checked luggage with a padlock (if you don't have combination lock) or are you suppose to leave it accessible in case they need to check the contents? Thank you.
Is it safe to rap the suitcase with plastic. Thanks always for your useful tips
Ummmm, Air Tags and their equivalents have lithium batteries, which are not supposed to go in the hold.
I actually bought customized luggage covers, with my name and likeness on it. Can putting a photocopy of my DL inside work as well?
Can someone please explain to me why people shrinkwrap their luggage, don't security cut it off to check your bag?
A great video and a detailed one.. thank you for sharing this.... . I'm sure these great tips would be of help to everyone.
Unfortunately even after paying a high cost to airlines and airport taxes these guys are highly irresponsible... And we end up thinking and spending our hard earned money in further unnecessary stuff to ensure it's safe and secure.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
Great video again. Thanks.
Another fantastic video full of great and necessary travel tips Megan!
I can’t wait to bump into you in Da Nang in the next 6 months! 👍🌹🙏👏🏻😎
Please explain how a baggage tracker or airline app is going to prevent my bag from getting lost or delayed
Where did you buy your Level 8 from?
Amazon? Level 8 website? A store?
Thanks.
What about using the SITA WorldTracer system?
Is the level8 luggage anti-theft? Or can the zippers still be popped open by a ballpoint pen?
Hi i have a question, can product’s containing glycerin set off the machine?
Hello
Is there any soft (foldable) bags that could be used for a checked bag ? Kind of like an over flow if we gain souvenirs as we travel ?
Check Biaggi. I just got one to take on my next trip.
Apple Air tags are great
Thanks for being on the channel, Eddie.
I wrap making tape around the handle of my checked bag. No one else does this. They tend to use red tape.
hello! I'm hooked to your channel! top content! where should I put my jewelry? checked bag or carry on? I'm scared the tsa say it's not prohibited and lose everything! xxx
1, don't bring jewelry. 2, if you must in carry on if it's at all valuable, or just bring the cheap stuff.
Never in checked-in luggage. If you must bring jewelry, keep it with you in your carry on or hand bag that you can keep an eye on
I just circumvent the whole issue by traveling with carry-on luggage only.
