Able to share the itinerary? Notice why you did not start from Fukuoka head to Nagasaki? Would it be good to stop at Kumamoto cover Mount Aso? ANd then further continue to Mount Sakurajima?
Yo, i went Kyushu 3 times b4, each time vastly different itenaries. Specifically to ur questions, i tried ur route (left to saga -> nagasaki first etc) during my first try, it was great too. No right or wrong, just personal preference. But i think going southwards (kagoshima/miyazaki etc) has a more difficult drive, esp the winding roads ard aso area. So it could be a good idea to get the more difficult drive out of the way first :)

Which car rental you used ?
Yo. Major ones all can but if no preference just go for Toyota. Do note for Toyota, there're 2 Toyotas @ fukuoka airport, 1 @ international side + 1 @ domestic side (need shuttle bus to go, if airport is stil under reno). So it's rather confusing. Do go for the international side one -> go to its pickup point, then Toyota wil standby van to pick u up to its actual office nearby. The problem is the pickup point is rather confusing, so u buffer urself sometime to ask for the pickup point :)
