Fun December 16th, out casting for these Lake Ontario Eastern Basin walleye.
Water temps were 36 degrees and air temps were 38, fish were holding in 26-to 35-foot..
My favorite rod & reel for this style of fishing when temps are above freezing is TFO's Professional Walleye series, PRO WC 764-1, 7' 6" M power fast action rod paired with a KastKing BFS Zephyr reel spooled with 5 lb. Cortland Masterbraid with a 36-40" section of 12.9 lb. Cortland Top Secret Fluorocarbon.
For the past 30 days walleye that roam the Eastern Basin are stagging in Chaumont Bay as they prepare to winter over in this area before they begin their annual spawning runs in late April & May.
Anglers trolling these fish have done very well using Berkeley Flicker Minnows S11 or Walleye Nation Creation Reapers on in-line boards using 50- to 75-foot sets, but that ain't me.
If they can catch em trolling them I know I can catch em casting. Trip before this one we have two 9 pounders and a one 8 pounder. Today I brought my GoPro camera and I lost two fish to light bites, but I managed to get a decent one in the boat.
