  • In this adaptation of the Thomas Mann novel, avant-garde composer Gustave Aschenbach (loosely based on Gustav Mahler) travels to a Venetian seaside resort in search of repose after a period of artistic and personal stress. But he finds no peace there, for he soon develops a troubling attraction to an adolescent boy, Tadzio, on vacation with his family. The boy embodies an ideal of beauty that Aschenbach has long sought and he becomes infatuated. However, the onset of a deadly pestilence threatens them both physically and represents the corruption that compromises and threatens all ideals

The boy represented the things you can't have. He said nothing throughout the film but threw teasing glances at the man. It was like he was the spirit of ideal beauty itself. Disturbing.
Bjorn said if he had known what does now he wouldn't have acted the role. He said he was uncomfortable and he wasn't gay. He's been married since 1983. Such a sick twisted but beautiful story. This kind of movie plays with your emotions

Tadzio represented the youth and energy that Gustav lost and would never have again, as well as representing the daughter he lost and the Angel of Death.
Gustav was a dying man physically, emotionally and spiritually but trying to cling onto life. Tadzio was merely showing him the exit.

It certainly played with mine. When I saw Bjorn I felt completely defeated as a person. Nothing I had to offer would be as great as what Tadzio could. And because of this I felt like nothing. How do you work through that? Powerful negative emotions come through with this story. But, even this, is not reality my negative friend.

There's a big mistake in the infobox. In the original Novel the protagonist (Gustav Aschenbach) is NOT based on Mahler (despite his music being in the movie, whose protagonist may be inspired by a composer, maybe Mahler) but partially on the author of the novel (Thomas Mann) who, like the protagonist, saw a 11 y.o. polish noble boy and couldn't help starring at him and thinking about him (he didn't stalk nor follow him though, unlike the protagonist; Mann wasn't homosexual, he was in Venice with his wife in 1911). The other german writer the protagonist is based on is AUGUST VON PLATEN (the name Gustav is an anagram of August, same letters in a different order and Platen was born in Ansbach, which resembles the surname Aschenbach; moreover he died in Syracuse, Sicily due to cholera, like the protagonist, and apparently he went there as a sexual tourist).

Aschenbach is very slightly based off Mahler. The description of his appearance is precisely that of Mahler, but other than that, I’m not aware of many similarities. The book was began just after news of Mahler’s death, which had surprised Mann. There are a few photographs of Mann and Mahler together. Those are interesting.

Thomas Mann would now doubt be hounded, vilified, reviled and probably be jailed or commit suicide! Mahler has nothing to do with the story and the movie (except the music). It's based on a novel written by Thomas Mann about a personal experience during a holiday in Venice (btw, not even mann was homosexual, he just couldn't help staring at that boy, but unlike the charachter in the novel he didn't stalk him that much nor follow him around like that. And obiouvsly didn't "love" him, whereas the protagonist of the book does, even if in a platonic way. Furthermore Mann's wife was in Venice with him aswell, but the protagonist of the novel is alone during the whole trip).
