  • We still battle cold temperatures but all the bilge stringers are fitted, although it has been to cold to epoxy them in place. So we moved on to chine installation on the starboard side.
    This is this is the story of a complete boat owning and boat building novice and his family, constructing a 41’ full displacement trawler yacht in the backyard of their upstate New York home. While I consider myself a fairly advanced amateur woodworker and DIY guy, I’ve never owned a boat before and certainly have never built one either.
    The naval architect, George Buehler, designed this boat, from his Diesel Duck line, with the home builder in mind. This design has been licensed for professional builders in China and Turkey, but George’s goal was always to make the large, blue water cruising boat within the reach of the average person.
    His commitment to a design that was attainable for the average handy person, resulted in his first book, Buehlers Backyard Boat Building, detailing the process. His designs often include building materials and fasteners available at the big box home improvement stores.
    George believed that a robust, comfortable and safe cruising boat could be built with less than ideal, traditional materials. While he acknowledge that less than ideal materials may limit the vessels longevity and resale value, his design would get people safely out on the water while the other guy remained landlocked saving for a design he would never be able to afford to build.
    Many traditionalist scoff at his mostly hard chined designs and deviation from traditional methods and materials. However his maverick approach has made the dream of crossing oceans in a home built boat a reality for many around the world. No matter what the “experts” say, his designs have been proven over and over with literally hundreds of examples cruising the worlds oceans today.

    It's not just boat building i'm new at!, a little user error on the Teespring store which I think I fixed but it may not display properly for a bit. There is a link in the description that you can use instead if necessary. I apologize for the error, I'll get better!.....probably.

    I've never sailed, or know anything about boat sailing, I've only ridden on car ferries, that cross Galveston bay, as a child.
    Watching you makes me wanna build a boat, like a bucket list project, you make it look easy. Must be George Buehler's plans, that help a lot. What's good about this project, it's like a huge assembly by numbers project, that can be done with materials anyone can obtain. Much cheaper than trying to build a car, or a vehicle, which requires specialized machinery, tools, mills and lathes.
    I'm in my mid 50's now, I bet I could do it. I got plenty of tools. Just need to move closer to the Gulf of Mexico. And take swimming lessons at the "Y". 😆

    Nice work! I like that you use commonly available material. I built a 38 ft. roberts in a northern town in the 80's and it was difficult to source material pre-internet. Now I learn so much on the internet from all the current projects I follow. I love your boat shop construction as I probably spent more time building two heated shops, than I did working on the boat. To all who may read this, shop building is an addiction just like boatbuilding.

    • @SixPointsWoodWorks
      @SixPointsWoodWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could build this whole boat with dimensional lumber and plywood. You might need to double up on some of the pieces but it could definitely be done, and was in fact designed to do just that. We used a lot of dimensional doug fir in the keel but the rest is custom milled larch and white oak. However I did that because it's very easy and cheap to get near me. The shed project was a lot of fun and is a great space for lots of different activities. I wish I built it taller, but hind sight.....

She’s beautiful! And that you are doing it so much alone is very inspiring. Im going to order study plans for a boat or my own. I could certainly not take in anything of the scale you have. White oak is a very good boat and barrel wood. With a thin cut length of oak, bend it and it wont crack or break easy which a boat needs as it flex's underway where wood like mahogany will easily break crack and split.

    • @SixPointsWoodWorks

    Hey Scott - going well - great to see. I mentioned on a previous post that you do not need to use acetone with epoxy resin for clean up, etc - use methylated spirits instead - much cheaper, far less toxic an deasily obtainable - check out other sources if you do not believe me but I do a lot of epoxy resin work...

    I was positive the first time I spiled a plank for replacement on a 34 foot boat. Thing looked strange and seemed to twist and bend all the wrong directions. It slipped in like a dream. Instead of doing the measurements like you are doing you can use a pencil compass. Just make sure you establish the distance for the arcs and maintain them the same for that plank. Looking good.

      @manfredschmalbach9023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrong.
      You feel the difference very destinctively, at least on a sailing boat.
      There's no problem with hard chines though, as long as they're positioned properly in terms of trim and heel (not a thing in tugboat-style engine propelled ones ...), but George Buehler ever was said to have the feel for his boats, havin' been a simple sailor himself all life long.
      Wait for Salt'n Tar's Rediviva sailing to see what one mahussive hard chine does to her performance - can't take long til they try it, she already floats. (Buehler boat as well.)

    I built a 50ft wooden structure in temps of 90 deg F.........when the finished structure was subject to low temps it would distort, I would only ever build a large wooden structure at the average operating temp and not at any of the extremes.....have you calculated what those wooden planks are going to expand to in summer temps?

    • @SixPointsWoodWorks
      @SixPointsWoodWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that is the right way to look at it. If it were so, they would be building houses around here in the spring and fall. Wood moves with moisture content, not temperature. Provided the wood is dried before installation, which it is, the seasonal changes in the material are not a big deal. The use of glues and bedding compounds are to remedy that known seasonal movement of all types of wood. When building furniture, wood movement is a much more critical consideration, because wood movement can cause tight, pretty joints to open up. It can even split boards in cross grain situations. But boats, subjected to brutal conditions, are designed to deal with this.

    8:08 Why is that beautiful piece of live edge white oak "kinda scrap"? The things I could build with something like that, woooo wee... awesome work regardless, loving this series, just confused as to why that is considered scrap to you :/

    • @SixPointsWoodWorks
      @SixPointsWoodWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For furniture stuff it is a great piece, but for boat building it was not so perfect. That board was near the edge of the tree so it had a bit of sap wood on each side. It was only useable for the right piece that could cut around those defects. Sap wood does not have the strength or rot resistance of the heartwood in white oak.

      Silicon bronze would be best fort sure. However the cost was just to much for me. We are building for ourselves and are not concerned about resale so galvanized will give us all the strength and longevity we need. just FYI in case you are working on something similar, Stainless is not recommended below the water line, it needs free oxygen to avoid crevice corrosion.

      User error on my part, sorry. I think I fixed it, but it may take a bit to show up in the feed again. Here's a link and I added one to the description: www.teespring.com/stores/sea-dreamer-project-gear

      Well, you might be comparing apples and oranges there. Perhaps who is left with most fingers, at the end of their build, is a more useful measure...Scott is currently shading that one.

    Is that dengerous to build a wooden boat??? You need to have that over the top face mask???

      no not at all. The respirator has a nose cup and and is the only eye protection I have that doesn't fog up. I suppose it's not a bad thing that it cuts down on all the fine dust I breathe in but that's not a huge concern.

    Average handyman with a few tools can do this build .... what planet are you from ? lmao

    • @SixPointsWoodWorks
      @SixPointsWoodWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can! That doesn't mean it is without challenge. I'm lucky to have 20 years of buying woodworking tools which makes many jobs faster, but smaller, common hand operated power tools can get the job done as well. More equipment allows you to save money buying wood in "the rough" and machining it up yourself, but finished lumber is widely available. As for the design, It is nothing that complicated. I know nothing about boats, however, with enough reading and study anyone can learn anything.

    Hi Scott, I've been watching your build since the beginning and admire your persistance and vision. Doug, the rebuilder of th-cam.com/users/chaschiara spiled all the new planks on Susanne and he has some excellent explainations, demonstrations, full vlogs of how it is done. I don't rem the episode numbers but it is somewhere in the middle of the series. Got your Challenge Coin from SV Seeker. Good Luck.
