Really great series, gentlemen. Joe and Mark, I've been an A&P mechanic since 1988, with thirty-two years experience at Delta Airlines. I've been involved in many structural repair and some modifications projects. Now that I'm retired, watching your series, just reminds me how much I really enjoyed being an A&P mechanic. It really makes me want to build my own Van's aircraft. Very few things I'd have done differently Joe, and it's just so obvious to me that this is a labor of love for you Joe. One thing I wondered through the inspection process with Charlie was if he worked with a detailed checklist format specific to the RV-8 ? I'm also very curious about the Lycoming powerplant you chose Joe. Why you selected it, and what advantages or disadvantages you've noticed with it ? I would love to see a series in which someone like yourself does a coast to coast trip in an RV. For a number of years I subscribed to Kit Plane magazine. My high lite reel would be complete if I could meet Dick VanGrunsven. I'm not being glib when I say that I believe he pioneered bringing kit aircraft to the mainstream. His aircraft, the simplicity, the performance along with the forgiving characteristics, is what makes them like no other. Thanks gentlemen and best of luck.
All very informative! Did anyone notice the nut was missing from the tail wheel pivot shaft? He mentioned it later, but the DAR didn't say anything while he was inspecting it. At 3:37:19
Some things they do are quite questionable. E. g. up to Minute 55 (when I started to fast forward) not a singe hole was drilled straight... Some holes they drilled with clecos only from one side -if possible you should always drill between two clecos to prevent what Van's call creeping. The elevators they attached provisionally just flapped down - they should be mass balanced at that point and not flap down but more or less stay where they are when you are not holding them. And what they say about electric drills is simply not true. Maybe it was 20 years ago.
I wonder if it would be better practise to wet assemble and electrically bond more of this aircrafts components, or is this not so common in smaller aircraft?
When you put the primer in the fuselage how in the world do you get the primer on ALL surfaces in all the various holes and everywhere that you can't see without having to take the entire fuselage apart??? I'm so confused.
And if you can wait out receiving the kits that are backlogged. Keeping our fingers crossed that Van's will make it through BK. Fortunately I bought a built -8 8 years ago.
Now, for a limited time only, you can send VANS a deposit…..they will hold you hostage in bankruptcy court……and your cheap home built airplane becomes a time and money pit. Get yours today.

I'm the third owner of a 2002 RV-8A and I love it! Great airplane!
Hey Mark, nice to see you here :D
I appreciate your work, hope you are doing fine.
Hard to believe the video was over 20 years old! Thank you!
I can absolutely believe it. Especially with those prices.
It's a shame what happened to the company
2023 - double all prices mentioned in video.🤑
Treble prices for the UK!
How much would that be?
2024. Quadruple+ all prices mentioned in video 😵
i checked an its more 4 times the price now in Europe
We can thank our Federal Governments and Central banks for spending too much and printing money.
Best performance, and value for money aircraft ever “made”. Fabulous capacity and with Flymore Tip Tanks it has 6.5 hours endurance
The airworthiness certificate for this plane was issued in 2001. Over 20 years later, and the RV-8 kit hasn't changed much.
It is kind of like the A-36 bonanza...they got it right from the beginning...
apart from the price, they say a finished RV, inc paint, engine etc is $50,000

is Sonerai better than RV 3 ? why or why not ?

What a great job building and documenting. Congratulations! Very intimidating though I must say!
I flown the RV-8 before. It’s simply wonderful!
Thanks for upload , really appreciate it , building mine soon
I remember watching this show on the DIY network.
What a gem of a machine
Thanks for sharing this!
👍🙏❤
Well done, learned a bunch.
Yes the prices are definitely 20 years old. Wish these were current prices.
Would love to see a stretched rv-10 for 6 seats/ bonanza rival.
I remember seeing bits and pieces of this show or at least Joe back in the day. PBS maybe.

Excellent series! When building the wings, why were static wicks omitted? Thanks.
Thank you so very much🙏💯😎
You are so welcome

RIP to those avionics.
What year was this shot? Do we have any updates on the aircraft all these years later?
This is a series filmed by our partners at Air2Air many years ago. No updates were made since.

New feature: Laser cut parts! 🤣😅
...sorry, I just *had* to _crack_ that joke
If buy a kit plane was still 50-60k excluding the engine I would save every cent
What is the airplane at the 37:56 mark??
That's a Griffon Lionheart, basically a composite Staggerwing. Too bad they couldn't sell that many kits.
Indeed a Lionheart. Amazing plane for sure! AOPA did a feature on it a few years ago.
I guess denim shirts were all the rage in 2001?

@@Dronescapes I helped a friend with his RV-6A project years ago. (A small part, anyway) If I ever have the $ to build a plane it'd be an RV-10.
