In the past, this was the biggest game in Portuguese football. But that has long changed... since the early 90's. Since then, there is no question about it... The biggest game of the season by far is Benfica - Porto / Porto - Benfica. These are the biggest and most successful football clubs in Portugal. Sporting is and will always be the small underdog that will try to get in the way of the 2 clubs. As for the Sporting fan in the video that says that Benfica has titles and Sporting history... I'd say that is the most absurd thing i've heard in quite sometime. In this video, Manuel Fernandes only says that this is the biggest game in Portugal so that Sporting still feels relevant in this battle. Nothing else.

Like Sporting fan I will thank you for this short zoom about our most old inportant national derby.
And I like to clarify why Sporting is known as high class club. Its about our foundation in 1906 by a Visconti José de Alvalade. Until the 70s bankers and high financial members,even politician s are connected to our club.
In Portugal Sporting bring inovation to all sports modalaties building the most big and only Olimpic stadium in 1956.(our old stadium before the actual one and the first stadium in Lisbon before Benfica) In 40s our club has the most well prepared headquarter s in Europe and the most large office.
In Portugal, Sporting Clube de Portugal is the second club in europe with most european titles conquered today.
To not mention the first Ultras supporters in PT 1976 "Leonine Youth" our even the first merchandise official store "Green Shop", in 80s before FC Porto and Benfica.
Fun fact: The old stadium José de Alvalade was the only place for live concerts in PT( 80s and 90s)...Michael Jackson,Guns and Roses, Sting,Rolling Stones,Marlyn Manson and others play before mass audiences.

It is true that Benfica was created by a group of passionate sports fans and had a remarkable past but you can't forget how the governament chose Benfica to represent Portugal internationally and so they gave them a lot of financial and legal benefits that smaller clubs didn't have, with Salazar in the governament those benefits were taken to the extreme since Benfica was in favor of the Regime. You can't also forget how Benfica used the church and the nations traditional values to manipulate people into giving the club money. It is a club with a very dark past, as many Portuguese clubs have.

@@David-qq9bk Well you can't forget the main reason for Sporting's success in XX century was due to their management being made out of the elite of Portugual, very wealthy, but most importantly mored educated, these were the people that introduced scouting, youth recruitment and development to Portugal so I don't really see a correlation here while with Benfica it is known, AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT, Portugal always had trouble with corruption, you can't expect football clubs to be an exception, the clubs can have a dark history but we can always grow from it 💪
