- The Chevrolet Corvette C8, great performance, but the styling left me wanting more. Or less. In this video we’ll re-design the Corvette C8, I’ll show you what the design problems are and how we can solve them to create something beautiful and worthy of the Corvette name.

This guy knows what he is doing, i also do car design, and Chevrolet has been making very edgy looking style to their vehicle lineup, just look at the new Chevy Silverado, people think that the crazier and edgy the car the better, but thats not what i think, its smarter to keep it clean but sleek and good looking
Original looks better in my opinion. You made the rear too blocky. I don't think you're taking aerodynamics into account with your redesign.

You could change the design of some cars to show what they would look like if they were build by another brand. Like, for example, the Corolla made by Honda, Civic by Toyota, Golf by Ford, and so on.
Ford already makes a Golf. It's called Fiesta and it's just as bad 😂
Ronaldo Bandeira well think about it🤔. If Honda made a corolla....it would look just like a corolla....with a Honda badge. If you start putting Honda design language on it, then it would just look like a possible Honda Civic Honda could make.

@@keino111689 No. You do not understand. What I proposed, for example, is to take a picture of a Civic and put some Toyota design elements in it. Or take a picture of a Mercedes and put design elements from BMW.
Ronaldo Bandeira I understand exactly what you mean. For example Toyotas tend to be rounded and more curvy and Hondas tend to have flat surfaces, skinny lights, squared edges......and maybe you can take a Camry and apply a bit of slimness to it or some headlights that look like they belong on a Honda. I get what you mean. But that goes back to my point. It’s kind of pointless because once you do that....it now either looks like a Honda or not Honda enough and still looks like a Toyota etc. I just don’t see that being substantial content. But we can agree to disagree, it’s all good.
You are a genius. When they redesigned the Corvette to look like the one you created I’ll buy it.

Yeah packaging dictated the outboard position of the exhaust tips. also the header design.
Should still be possible though, previous vettes has transaxle

No its because their brief was to still carry 2 sets of golf clubs.Centre exhaust = less space and heat. In the previous models transaxle, the gearbox is in front of differential,the new DCT ,the gearbox is behind the differential.
Can you make a video about rims ? Like I’ve seen your takes on body styles and would like to know how you view the impact a certain rim has on a car .
This isn't a bad idea, I'd definitely watch that.

Yes, we want a designers perspective on selection of rims. Preferably several episodes covering different types of cars.
For instance: American, European, and Asian sports cars. Retro, street, daily driver etc. And some crazy ideas.
I think you need to reduce the amount of videos per week and put more effort on your redesigns ... I like your redesigns, some of them are great " like the honda S2000" but the last few redesigns weren't well thought in my opinion.
I'm not sure, the underhang styling just makes it look fat to me. Like the vent design though.
Front view definitely needs more help though so hope we get that redesign.
Wi1dCard I think it’s kind of funny that he made the car look fatter, yet he ragged about how it looked fat with the house example. I love the design as is. No changes needed, it’ll just take some time to catch up for some people.
Not fatter but fuller, the proportions from his redesign fit better than the original
@@mikeoz6643 yeah it already looks like a layer cake but the added red bits exaggerates that more than I feel necessary. As of now I like the bigger rear light design as it calls back to the camaro without just cloning its rear end.

Your redesign really improved it, but i think it made the rear look bit too tall due to the higher tail and those fender wraparounds.
Still, just a personal opinion, keep up the good work!

then again does the cars ass keep true what a corvette has always been after the 4th gen? this redesign keeps that. everyone can easily recognize a c7 cause of the tail pipes. thats what the corvette is knowned for in looks(the c4 started it and it is supposed to stick) contact chevy engineers about this and see what they think
I personally think the new C8 Corvette is one of the best looking vehicles ever manufactured in history! I may be one of the few but I'm going to stand with it and I will own that car someday.

Add BMW square offset headlights and smoked headlight cover (for aero) give it a forward leaning rake, and drag slicks. Good to go my bro.

You make completely valid points, sir, but I still like the design. It could be better, sure, but Chevrolet will sell every single one they can run off the assembly line. This will be, by far, the bestselling Corvette of all time.
I didn't think the C8 could look any better, but somwhoelw, you made it 10x better looking.
I thi k the C8 is one of those designs that will make more sense when the zo6 and zr1 come out.

I am glad I discover your channel because i am studying to be an automotive designer. Even though I was shocked in the other video of the C8 because I loved the design, I appreciate the explanation.
The only thing that I am see is that the lights are too similar to the ones of the camaro nowadays.

The door/air intake is a design masterstroke..who else has a door that has part of the air intake on it?.. its amazing. As you mentioned the mid engined car has to have a totally diffetent look to take advantage of the engines position. The front of the C8 to me is better than any mid engine car out there.
Glad about your comments of the C7. The only reason the C7 rear got hate at first, is the tail-lights. That was just one hurdle. After you look at the rest of it, you realize, "Oh, Corvette's always curved like this". What complicates things is the C8 does not have that typical Corvette curve. It's busy, cramped, but also I can't blame it. It's Chevy's first time going Mid-engine for the Vette. I personally don't see myself liking the Z51, but I respect Chevy's efforts. Here's to hoping the Z06, ZR1, and Zora will look better.

To me...the 3 things in styling of the C8, that seems off, are the side air intakes that seems too long, the rear seems too wide, and the headlights seems too big.

You're very talented, Sir, but I'm very annoyed that you have approached this project this way. This new car is form following function. Every line and angle on it was formed because of how the performance molded the design. Airflow over the rear deck dictated what shape and angle would provide the best result. The rear exhaust is at the side because of where the engine and transmission now sit. I'm sure some design decisions were made to give us a fresh product, but all you talked about in your presentation was how everything looked. You have not considered at all the math and other dynamics that contribute to the final design. If you started with a wire frame of the body around all the underpinnings, then I'd appreciate this project much more. But right now, this is meaningless.
Jason, don't believe all the marketing hype "it had to be like this, we used a wind tunnel....blah, blah, blah" The side intake is designed like it is, simply to form a "C" for corvette. I am sure they could have done any other design and had the same aerodynamics.
Exhaust easily could be done in the center, it's especially easy to do if you put an aftermarket mufflers instead of factory, actually. It just goes from engine straight down. They could've make an exhaust system similar to 911 GT3, which has center exhaust that is in way tighter space. They couldn't make it higher because of the trunk, but not making it center is a mistake.
Good redesign as hoped for, but I just wanted you to move the license groove a bit down! I think the corvette lettering logo could come down with it as well to the central area of the taillights
Corvettes are hands down the best looking cars throughout each generation bar none. No other make has done it better.

Having the body color wrap around made such a huge difference. That's my favorite part from this redesign. I agree with your assessment of the side intakes, they don't flow. I'd like to see a side redesign more than a front, I think. Great vid! Keep up the good work!

Well, that was disappointing. I waited half the video for you to start applying your magic touch to it and you didn't even change much.
I've been waiting for this vid since your initial C8 review. Nicely done! Especially the center exhaust and the vent size/shape. To get rid of the weak dip at the top, I like the current C8 just without the spoiler - this would have been a great place to implement Active Aero (deployable spoiler). Need a side view to understand what you did to fix the side scoop.
Looks good! Although i think its styling is perfect as is, i'd really like to see what you can do with the e39

I had different opinions when you first talked about the C8 bad design in the other video, but I TOTALLY agree with you on this one, great redesign! I'm really impressed how some sutil changes just made more sense for the Corvette. Greetings from 🇧🇷

Your redesign looks better but the exhaust pipes can't physically be there because that is where the transmission is located now.
How come Supercar companies have done it? Such as Lamborghini

I think this design for the C8 has a purpose but also doesn't flow like you're saying. Some car companies are going for the angled look. And maybe the C8 is supposed to look angular. In fact, the design reminds me of a Lamborghini Urus. Both a lot of creases and angles. You would think they are from the same brand. However, the Urus is the most attention giving SUV I've seen. So many people look at them when they go past. If it wasn't designed like that, it might not have given such appeal.

They couldn't. The dual transmission sits there now. If you put the exhaust in the center there would be no place for the transmission or the trunk.

One of the Chevy guys said that there were technical reasons that they didn't do the center exhaust during an interview at the launch.
Someone at Chevy likes Camaro lights.. they need to bring back the circular lights!
I think the shape is good, but I think they should have seperated them with some body colour to make them quad lights at least.
This! So this! Circular-ish lights are on every gen Corvette since the 1st.
I sometimes wish these redesigns make it into the actual car, or even as a kit. This redesign is probably the best i have seen yet, it changed how i think of the car.

I know there is the factor of practicality and actually making the car which often wreck designers sketches, but its still funny to see one dude make a car look better in 15 minutes and a cup of coffee than massive car companies do in a matter of months.
You have my exact opinion on this car and like what you did to the rear but please fix the rest of it too. Specially that side scoop.

Can you make the rear end of the Dodge Durango look less like a minivan? I love the vehicle's looks except for the back end. On that same concept, could you create a new midsize pickup from the Durango?
The center exhaust is only a new design trend with Corvettes to my knowledge. It was only with the introduction of the C5 in about 1996 that they adopted center exhaust

The exhaust on the C8 was moved to the sides for functionality so by moving them back to the center you can kiss the trunk bye bye.

You should do a full redesign. The changes were too subtle. I think 4 round taillights would look sweet af.
Looks good. The centered four exhaust is great. The problem with such projects as the C8 is that expectations are so high, they get over-designed sometimes.
SO much better looking i expect that we will see a body kit take styling from your work to replace the rear end

back of the trans of a mid engine veh is right there thats usually the clutch housing or v drive housing, usually a little tough to get exhaust exits there. if you look at the konnisseggs they exit there but a little higher along with the zonda as well. I absolutely love your redesigns though.
I think it looks so much better. Just making those air outlets bigger made a big enough change

The quintessential corvette has always had strong lines even the garbage corvette like early nineties. I agree with you, these lack luster lines over the entire car are weak and seemingly random. Stiffen up the lines and more bold, frame the car a little better with rear front and side profiles. And bring back a little of the simple corvette style.

The framed bottom and the exhaust is all I liked from the redesign because with the other stuff I just felt like there’s too many holes in the back
Couldn't agree more. I didn't know what made feel a little off on the C8, but now I know. I feel like the stuff you're talking about is basic design school stuff and Chevy got too caught up in engineering to notice. And maybe you're right that different groups worked on different parts of the car. I would still buy one if I had the means, but I think a redesign in a couple years would extend the life of the C8. Great video!

That's amazing how you transformed the new C8 to unify the body lines. I was wondering, how would the new C8 look with the C7 rear end converted?
I really am hoping that we do get that front and/or side view of the C8. I do agree with the majority of your points for the side with line continuity to improve the overall look, and the only thing I would probably do different on the back would be to keep the exhausts where they are and instead add a diffuser so that the spots where they go don't look out of place.
On a different note, I agree with t3ch fre4k's idea of a second gen. Camaro, and specifically the years of 79-81 in my opinion as they are more likely going to be an easier base to work with.
I find it amazing that a man with the most questionable design aesthetic has the gall to say that this Corvette to be re-done. Some of your refreshes have left me speechless and not in a good way. But you do hit the nail on the head sometimes and I happen to agree with your take in this case.
Just a suggestion, but I would love to see a series of you going through some popular modern sports cars and supercars from a design perspective, and just breaking down what you like and don't like about them design wise.
The house you talk about is in my home town!
The side intake on the C8 took inspiration from the side intake on the CERV III
That house is in Canterbury which is a medieval City (very small city) in the Southeast of England. That is Canterbury Cathedral in the background, where the Archbishop of Canterbury presides. It doesn't look that wonky in person.
Well I'm glad you actually find the C7 beautiful. I have one and totally agree - best looking Corvette in a very long time.
I do agree on some of your flow and angle comments, but as a car designer you should understand that it's not "easy" to move the exhaust to the center in a mid-engine car.
I think the reason for the big black area at the bottom rear is to help make the rear view of the car not look quite as tall, so adding body color to the bottom kind of defeats that purpose. The bigger airflow exhausts do look better, though.
Kind of wish you'd done more of a side angle of the car because I do think the rear fender area seems a bit too tall in reference the wheel well/tire.
I think it would be cool if you modernized the lancia stratos.
