Oh those 4th of July crowds, you guys are so brave but you did find a good, quiet spot!! Also, we've been to that winery several times but have never gone down into the cave, thanks for the tour!
Driving around on the golf cart was the most fun for us.At dusk this town seems to be all about the bars and drinking. So as seniors who still enjoy a couple beers at night with dinner and back at hotel. But I did see the downside to all those who imbibe too much and watched 2 arguements happen on the street which thankfully ended up with nothing but loud words and just being pulled away by the girlfriends. The days were all about exploring the island and its attractions. 2 days here was enough for us to see it all.looking to explore another destination next year.
Yeah, it was a bit chaotic for us lol. We enjoyed Kelly’s Island much more. If you haven’t seen that video, I recommend watching that one and if you haven’t been there, be sure to add it to your list.
Number 1 rule always ask the locals! World's Lamest cave! LOL! We loved the honesty in this video sounds like we will mainly stick to Kelly's Island. Enjoyed all the fun facts the memorial did look great that view was incredible. Oh mynthat was the best appetizer ever I get lobster on birthdays and anniversary and I would not pass up on that cocktail oh my yummy!! Also laughed at all the Michael's at the end I am always saying Ronald especially when it comes to the dogs or kids! This has been a great trip can't wait to one day be full.time and do some traveling with you all!!
Looks like a lot of fun thanks for sharing we haven’t been to either ! We love caves we try to go everywhere we go best ones I’ve been to is racoon mountain in Tennessee they have a campground right there where the caves are and are worth every penny .Nice memorial 14:26
We used to stay on Middle Bass and camp and then take the Sonny S to Put In Bay. My wife and I go a few times a year but we leave the island by 2pm because it starts getting crazy. Going during the week is also fun because you can explore the ins and outs better.
We would like to camp on middle bass too. And we certainly won’t go to PIB July 4th weekend again. Lol. I do still think those islands are one of Ohio’s’ treasures!
Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan! 🇮🇩 Kami mendukung acara Anda di South Bass Island untuk merayakan 4 Juli. Semoga semuanya berjalan dengan lancar dan penuh kebahagiaan! 🎆🥳 #PutInBay4thofJuly #DukunganDariIndonesia 🌴🇺🇸🤝
There were some other caves across the street that we wish we would have went to instead. Like we stead in the video - it was cool to look at but we were all like - is that it??? Thanks for you support guys!
The ruins of the building on the North trail is the remains of the old limestone crushing plant. Years ago, freighters used to pull in on that side of the island to load stone, then on to the West Bay years later. The remains of the old quarry still remains, which you hiked on. There’s another quarry that was still in operation into the 90’s. Freighters used to pull in right across from the West Bay Inn to load, and the remains of the conveyor are still there. That’s the huge quarry on the western central portion of the island. The road used to go straight across where that quarry is until they opened it back up for operation. There’s also Horseshoe Lake on the eastern side (yes, another old quarry!). Glacial Grooves bordered the North Quarry, and it was much larger when first discovered, but was destroyed by the operation of the North Quarry. There hasn’t been many places I haven’t seen on KI, as I’ve been going there since I was on a tricycle with my parents. The state park used to be one loop, then they added the offshoots to the right back in the 90’s as well. The ONLY place I’ve yet to see in over 40 years of going on the island is the old winery ruins. Funny thing too, one of the school teachers used to be my fifth grade teacher further south. Her and her husband retired to the island, and she wound up teaching at Estes School. (R.I.P. Gwen Addy. You were my favorite teacher in grade school.) Anything you want to know about Kelley’s, I can probably tell you. My favorites? Seeing the sunrise at the state park sitting on a bench by the picnic shelter, watching a sunset at the West Bay Inn (I’m older now. LOL!) My favorite spot to eat is either the West Bay, or The Village Pump. I’m with you, Kelley’s is so much more laid back. One goes to Put In Bay to get their BUZZ ON! One goes to Kelley’s to relax. If you missed Mossbacks or Topsy Turvey’s on PIB, those are my two favorite establishments. Lake Erie love! And take care…..
Wow! Thank you so much for all of this information! You really know KI! We love it there and will definitely go back. It’s expensive to take the RV for just a weekend - we were there for 5 days this time so we would likely do that again or maybe even tent camp! It sure is beautiful! Thanks again for watching and taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment!
When I first started going there (I was four years old), we tent camped. It was always nice, until the tent leaked! LOL! It was an old tent, so with all things considered….. We had a slide-in camper back in the mid 80’s, and that was great, until the roof leaked. (Sometimes you just can’t win! LOL!) When I was able to go up on my own, I opted for the tent. There’s nothing like sleeping by the water hearing the waves roll in. Unfortunately, Erie can be an evil mistress, especially getting a nor’easter when camping at the State Park on Kelley’s! Back in the day there was nowhere to launder your clothes, or dry them if your tent leaked. Now with the marina, that’s not even a problem anymore. It was built in the 90’s, again, when the big orange boats started competing with the old Neuman Boat Line. There’s just something about tent camping you done get in an RV. Hearing everything around you at night, again, the waves rolling or sometimes crashing in, to me is preferable. Of course I’m biased! LOL! Kelley’s has sprung from a REALLY laid back place to something that has more to offer folks who travel there. I hope it doesn’t wind up getting to the point of Put-In-Bay, or it’ll lose its charm. Also, if you want REALLY REALLY laid back, check out Middle Bass Island. Last year was the first time I’d ever been there, and was really taken aback to how secluded it seemed. There’s three places to eat, one general store with a pub and grill, and a resort with a restaurant and bar. Other than that, pretty spartan. I think their state park has 12 or 14 sites, no power. LOL! It’s the place you go when you really don’t want to deal with people. LOL!
We go every year. Never did the cave or the whinery. We likeratlly just got back today. Best to walk on the weekend there. Crazy. We are never going on the weekend again.
KI was amazing. Not sure if anything has changed since you were there but i encourage you to get back there! I guess they have some kind of owl fest in the fall. Not sure if you are into birds but we are thinking about trying to get back for that next year.
Yeah we found that out after the fact. Thanks for letting us know though. We will have to check it out the next time. The one we went to was pretty disappointing. lol
After camping on KI for the past 40 years we finally gave South Bass a try last summer. We were there in late June of 2023. We share your view on the island. We were not impressed at all with the campground and we have grown past our days of going from bar to bar so downtown was not something we would do beyond a few hours. No hiking trails in the state park and not much else to do besides sit around the camp or the small beach area. Mayflies are also a factor depending when you visit. For late June it’s no bueno. We will stick to camping on Kelley’s! Thanks for your videos. I think if you can improve your video quality especially and at times your audio your content would be more popular. Your video is often over exposed and washed out, but you are on to something with your content. Thanks again.
Thank you, we appreciate the feedback. It is a learning process for us. Another factor in these particular videos and the Michigan videos is they were shot during the Canadian Wildfires so the skies were very hazy. We will definitely go back to KI! - Mike and Shelley
Mike hated the trip to Put-In- Bay because of the crowds. It didn’t bother me all that much besides almost getting killed on my bike! It got me thinking about people in the camping community often being like minded about things. Would you go to a touristy place during a holiday if the opportunity presented itself? Hey guys! It's labor day weekend, and we are pretty much laying low until Tuesday! It can be tough on the boat ramps for sure. Great share guys!
Thanks watching! Enjoy your holiday!
Oh those 4th of July crowds, you guys are so brave but you did find a good, quiet spot!! Also, we've been to that winery several times but have never gone down into the cave, thanks for the tour!
Yeah we didn’t plan very well. We did spend most of the time away from the crowds. Riding our bikes was dangerous though. Crazy!

Thanks for your support as always. That lobster cocktail was amazing! We will absolutely be meeting up one day. We will make sure of that!
Great video! I haven't been at Perry's Monument in a long time. Looks like y'all had a great time.
I just saw today that tours to the top are closed indefinitely due to a storm messing up the elevator some how. Glad we went when we did. ⚡️

We will have to look that up and see if it’s anywhere near where we will be later this month.

We have seen both island, and like them both, but not for the same reason. PIB is more crowded for sure, still a great place to visit.
It was fun to go to once anyway. I wouldn’t mind going back but I don’t think I would ever camp there. Except maybe to get my stamp 😂
We go every year. Never did the cave or the whinery. We likeratlly just got back today. Best to walk on the weekend there. Crazy. We are never going on the weekend again.
Smart. Add never go on the 4th of July either! Thanks for sharing, we appreciate it a lot! - Safe travels! - Mike and Shelley
Yep we agree, love KI not a big fan of PIB! It's actually been years since we have been to either. We need to head back to KI sometime. 😃
KI was amazing. Not sure if anything has changed since you were there but i encourage you to get back there! I guess they have some kind of owl fest in the fall. Not sure if you are into birds but we are thinking about trying to get back for that next year.
Perrys cave is across the street......pretty large

FYI: PIB is party island. KI is quiet family island. Though everyone knew that.😏
I’ve heard it rumored!
