Ivanchuk is such an amazing player. While it's crushing to see him cry like this, his contnued love for the game is heartwarming.

Naroditsky's reaction is kind of heart-breaking as well. I think he really feels bad for Chucky. I'm pretty sure he did not want to win the game that way. And yes, the arbiters should have left Vasily alone for a few minutes. If they had, I'm guessing Naroditsky would have been the first one to console him.

Yes, you’re right Gill, both players were quite affected by this game.

Age catches up with all us. I choose to remember how great Ivanchuk could play. Kasparov feared him and was crushed by Ivanchuks two knights vs two bishops immortal against Kasparov.

Yes, Ivanchuk is a real legend of our game.

People’s champion indeed, one of the most exciting players, even in this one. My heart goes out to him, I’ve been there, of course, not at that level, but know how it feels to drop a big one when you had the advantage

Yes, every over-the-board chess player has the battle scars.

Why died Ivanchuk cry, sob, wail, and bawl so much after losing? He lost nothing by losing. He would have gained nothing by winning. Plus, he should be satisfied knowing that not only did he lose on time, but he had a losing position in the final move as well!

I guess it was the stress and intensity of the whole day. This was round 11. It all became a bit too much. In round 1 his reaction may not have been as extreme.

chess is by far the hardest game i have ever played. one cannot truly lie to itself, which makes mistakes - especially the blundery ones - incredible hard to swallow, because you want to take your brain out and smash it to pieces. it makes you want to quit the game, but its appeal, the capability of the human mind, always draws one back in. chess is - for loss of a better term - truly hell xD

This whole thing is weird. Why would you sell tickets to let people hover over the chess boards in tournament play? Secondly, why would you then allow people to just stand and stare when someone is in distress. Thirdly, why are the people choosing to stand there and stare?

I guess it’s the same as people watching a road accident. It’s inappropriate but also inevitable.

You can find it on the Wikipedia pages of the events. This is the link to the Rapid page: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Rapid_Chess_Championship_2024
