I'll always have fond memories of cutting class in the the mid 80s and hopping the train into the city from Brooklyn. I remember the day me and a few friends made our last trip to the banks and found it fenced off, I was so pissed.
These were what we called the banks. The big banks were 2 minutes away but they werent skated much. This was the meeting place for just about every skater in NYC at the time.Meet up here, skate for a while and go to other spots.
I remember skating those banks as a young teenager back in '85 '86 '87. I lived in NJ so my mom would drop me off where my dad worked on 35th St in the morning then pick me up at 5:00pm at South St Seaport. I'd head straight to Washington Square Park where I'd always find other skaters to hang with. We would migrate down to the banks and skate all day. Amazing !! So sad to hear that its gone now.
hey 301, did you ever know a skater named Harry Humonji (Humonte Humongy) ??? Used to run into him mid to late 1980's NYC. He was like Philipino or Brazilian or some mix. He would show up to a spot with a gallon of Vodka, drunk/high as hell and still skate crazy good.
Ken West Yea dude, Herry is a NYC legend. If you search him on youtube (Harry Humonji) you can find some footage of him skating and doing some low key hijix type shit. I would love to see footage of him from the 80's. BTW you sound chill af, coming from one of the raddest eras in skating in one of the coolest places to be during that time
Started skating there in middle school around '02. Taking the train in from L.I. to skate the city was about the furthest id ever ventured into the world on my own. the small section was relatively unskatable but this was before they made it skate friendly and put in the rails and whatnot. Sad its gone but thats how i'll remember it.
unfortunately, no i don't have anymore. but if anyone out there has some old skate footage from the banks ( or any other NYC spots) sitting in their attic/basement feel free to contact me. i'd be happy to digitally restore it and post the footage. I'm mainly interested in the late 1980's and early 1990's.
In 89 if you slated the banks and didn't have 3's down you were in trouble. Entered every contest came in first except one to my boy. Dad to see it go but people did start hitting cars when they opened the runway.
i wish i skated back in the fishboard dayz alongside with steve rodriguez and anthony poppalardo. especially while that 2nd bank wa still there, would have been rad seshin that shit!
Man, it's amazing to see old Delury Square in Lower Manhattan on Fulton & Gold before they recently destroyed it for a new park. Although I was way young when this was filmed, I always remembered it as a popular skate spot.
We took the hour long train out from Long Island. We loved every minute of it. Musta been '90-'94. Sad to find out this skate spot is no longer around.
That first trick cue does is ill, How Pang does 360flips with an oldskool deck is beyond me glad I stumbled upon this clip
its so rad that skaters look almost equivalent to this in 2014. i mean foreal. The snapbacks, chinos, long sleeve shirts & t shirts.
the banks back in the day were the best. its crazy how different things are now, in NYC and in skating in general. awesome clip thx man.
