as a canadian person who has been seen way too many of these videos, I can say that that's legit the most expressive reaction (of an american) towards McGill

@@natalia.948 As far as I knew McGill, there is no consideration of extracurriculars for what Americans could apply to (until one gets waitlisted, in which case you may list your ECs in your LOCI; Quebec residents can apply to accelerated law or med, but it's only there where extracurriculars count); however, majors do matter...

    Hi, Natalie.
First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your hard work and getting into some prestigious colleges!!
I cannot begin to express how fathomed I was when I listened to your entire profile. I am LITERALLY a carbon copy of you. I’m currently in the situation you were in.
I’m definitely going for medicine one day and my high school extracurricular activities revolve around medicine. Your stats are by far the MOST realistic and relatable I have seen thus far.
My GPA right now is a 4.0 (3.9~ give or take but I’m pretty sure it’s a 4.0 and my weighted is higher but don’t know about that either), my SAT is a 1190, and my extracurricular activities aren’t looking too good. Well, I’ve only taken one SAT so far and I’m currently a sophomore but becoming a junior next school year. I will hopefully take all the next SATs but I heavily doubt I will get any higher than a 1400 (I probably won’t even reach a 1300 😢).
I’ve also taken 3 APs this year (World History, Seminar, Environmental Science) and I haven’t gotten my scores back yet but I’m pretty sure I got a 1 on my WH exam, possibly a 3 in seminar, and most likely a 3 or 4 on Env Sci (5 would be a blessing somehow). My school offers 11 aps in total so I’m going to take 4 next year and the last 4 in senior year. So, I’m with you in terms of taking APs and doing very well but not on the tests (pain 😩🥺🙄). I foresee myself not doing too well in the next APs but I’m going to study a lot harder than I did this year (was kind of lazy and unmotivated since this is my first time being back at school since 3 years of COVID.
But anyways, I’m pretty fucked at extracurriculars. As of right now, I have none. COVID-19 takes a huge BLAME. My entire freshman year was lost because of it and this year was also really bad because there were still bad outbreaks and lockdowns at some points, so yeah, it pretty much sucked this year as well.
I pretty much have 1 more year to get in my extracurriculars before applications. So, my current extracurriculars are nothing but I am hopefully going to get a nursing home job this summer. Unfortunately, it’s very hard to find a hospital volunteer job: #1: COVID and #2: High demand for volunteering and #3: commuting problems since I don’t live close to many problems and my family isn’t willing to commute for a variety of reasons.
I am very much so hoping to join Student government next year and POTENTIALLY start my own club (99.9% likely won’t because of my crazy amount of time consuming classes and since next year is the most important year to keep my GPA high so I need time to study and keep my mental health in check. Also, if I don’t do so well in my next SAT August, I will have to devote some of my time next year to it which would be extraordinarily depressing (hope I won’t have to).
Hoping to join the National Honors Society next year (my school also offers NHS only during 11th and 12th grade, unfortunately, just like your school). I’m also going to a similar residency this summer like Tuft’s mini med program! It’s a similar medical residency at St. Jonhs University. Also expensive, 4,000 ( pretty much the same as the mini med, well that would be 5,500 for residential and I’d have to go residential since I don’t live in MA). But yeah.
What I’m trying to ask you, though, is how did you get volunteering jobs at hospitals during COVID??!! Even right now with covid not being as bad, it’s still VERY hard to find anything, especially local, since either those volunteering jobs are unavailable, just reopening, or have fewer spots to compensate for everyone’s safety.
I’m praying I will be able to volunteer at a hospital next year (hopefully the entire year) and I’d just really like to know how you made that happen.
Thank you for this incredible video and of course, reading this freaking long essay about my currently messed up life lol.
    Have a nice day/night!

omg hi! thank you for taking the time to write this all out! i'm so glad to have brought a realistic perspective to this whole process! to answer your question, i did my in-person hospital volunteer work prior to the pandemic :/ in terms of how i got this opportunity, a lot of hospitals have junior volunteer programs for children under 18, so i would research whether your local hospitals offer a similar program! a lot of the time those programs are competitive- i had to submit an essay and interview, so just make sure you're read up on the program requirements. i rlly struggled to find opportunities throughout the pandemic, so i focused on things i could do that relate to my other interests- like teaching music to children who cannot afford music lessons (virtually). to maintain the medical-theme i wrote letters to nursing home residents. towards the end of the pandemic, i got a virtual internship at a hospital (i knew i wanted to study a particular psychological disorder, and i reached out to local doctors within hospital institutions if i could join their team and contribute). one doctor reached back out to me, and i've been interning virtually ever since! the medical residency program you are going to participate in is great for gaining experience (and for your resume haha). it sounds like you're a good student with a passion and drive, and that is the most important thing! i wish you the best of luck, and i hope more volunteer opportunities open up asap!

Many of those US colleges are not average, and are much, much harder to get into than McGill. McGill is not that prestigious

As an old McGill alum (‘81) I can say that McGill is relatively easy to get into, but it was (is) a lot harder than the more selective American schools. Science and engineering are sink or swim, professors give out low, failing grades routinely. The place destroyed my self esteem for a long time. Having said this, Montreal is a truly great city for a young person to experience adulthood for the first time.

I’ve been taking French at school for 6 years so I’m able to understand a lot and can converse at a intermediate level. I also plan to continue taking French classes in uni :)

You're right. I think because I did the program there, I thought I had a chance (judging from the large acceptance rate from my school there) however, I later learned they were all faculty kids... basically the data I was basing my calculations on was flawed. It all worked out tho :)
