  • Meet Retired Sheriff's Captain Leland McPhie. He turned 99 years young on March 10th. Captain McPhie is the oldest retired deputy in San Diego County.
    He joined the department in 1940 working in the old jail (facility prior to Central Jail currently in downtown San Diego). He took two-and-a-half years off from his law enforcement career to serve in World War II. Captain McPhie wrote the first manual or Policy and Procedure for deputies in the jail. He is a graduate of San Diego State University. His advice to new deputies? Get as much education as you can to have a long and successful career.
