And Richard Strauss -- the Superman love theme "owes" a lot to Tod und Verklarung. And, more subtly, the alien message in Close Encounters appears to be the opening notes of the Rosenkavalier final trio. But the Holst Mars was, I think, suggested in Star Wars because George Lucas made an advance cut of the film to it, making Williams go for a similar hammering rhythm.

you might want to check out Vaughan Williams, Malcolm Arnold, William Walton, Arthur Bliss, Elgar, William Alwyn, and a host of other English composers..including Eric Coates, who wrote one or two more "popular" tunes.....which you will DEFINITELY recognise. It`s a long tradition..
@@kieranryan6148 Yes! I have been savoring that piece since the '60s! RK is an unsung genius. So sad he suddenly died at 64, he was on the verge of what could have been his greatest work.
Superb! Holst was so amazingly prolific, and all those Planets get in the way of discovery of his output.
Holst completed Indra while on holiday with his wife in Berlin. Holst music is supposed to portray Indra, the Hindu god of rain and storm, in a struggle with a dragon, Vrita, who causes a massive drought. In the end, Indra overcomes Vrita and the rain begins to fall.

Can any of the experts of this form of music help me understand the nuances of this piece.
@@arunram.curations This really is simply Holst's interpretation of the events described in "Indra." It is an English composer at his point in time and understanding interpreting through music as he understood it. "Indra" is not like Beethoven's 6th "Pastorale" Symphony or Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" where there are special notations from the composers as to what they are intending to communicate in various themes and movements. "Indra" is best enjoyed as pure music thus allowing the listener to hear what he/she wants to hear based upon what "Indra" is about. I hope this helps.

There are various explanations for why the orchestral music of Holst (beyond The Planets) was largely ignored in his lifetime, but I agree that a reappraisal is long overdo. The majority of his output needs to be scheduled, played and heard more often.
The language of this tone poem is quite original. It is a very interesting score, very well orchestrated

This wonderful symphony was rather harshly critiqued by a prominent critic when this recording was published (being too incoherent apparently) . I'm glad others here in the comment section share my appreciation for Holst's symphonic works!

In fact, Indra of Vedic Aryans is not storm god (though he was made into so in later Hinduism and often confused) but the ultimate divine expression. He was venerated all over Eurasia in various names and forms. The first record for Indra comes from Mitanni in Syria. The "dragon" whom he fights is the symbol of lawlessness, called Vṛtra, and Vṛtra is not an "opponent", but is shown as someone who goes against the natural flow, Ṛta. (cognate with English "order") Indra as Vṛtrahan, Vrethraghan, Vahagn, was venerated all over prehistoric Eurasia, and his symbol of killing the obstacle against cosmic order was appropriated to dragon slaying of St. George into Christianity.

I wonder what his inspiration was for writing this lovely piece.
Holst's “Indian period” was brought about by reading Robert Watson Frazer's book of stories from Indian mythology, “Silent Gods and Sun-steeped Lands, which was published in 1895. Indra was Holst's earliest work using subject matter from that source. The work is a portrayal of the god Indra and his battle with the drought.

Even closer to his huge Wagnerian opera Sita, which was never performed -- partly due to his awkward libretto.
I wonder if you, or anyone else knows where he got the association of "the magician" for the planet Uranus. I have looked everywhere but have never heard of Uranus being associated with "the magician" before. Maybe it comes from an Indian tradition (Indian astrology?) as he was deeply interested in Indian religion.
Katherine A. Budd When Holst gave the planets their characteristics in The Planets, it was to an extent related directly to astrology, but it was also simply what he thought about them. Hope that helps :3
There could be no Indian astrological tradition about Uranus because their astrologers didn't know it existed! It needed a telescope, and a relatively advanced one, and therefore it was only discovered in 1781 by the Englishman Herschel. Holst's assignment of characters to the Planets is influenced by the Vedas and other Sanskrit writings, but is just as much classical. Mercury, Venus, Mars are all as the Greeks or Romans saw them; Jupiter is "Jovial". Perhaps Uranus's classical character was too grim for him, and Neptune too remote from the sea.

What a superb piece - as someone noted in terms of the piece reminding them of John Adams there is a connection between much Holst and what we today call MIMIALISM - I wonder why this has not been more commonly noted???

This sounds remarkably like the soundtrack of Superman, 1978. It could be that Mr. Williams borrowed from this great work, as "Superman" and Indra have somethings in common.

Indra is a God, Superman is a comic book character.
Indra is more like Greek Zeus, Roman Jupiter, German Odin, Baltic Perun, this are all in fact, different names refereeing to one same entity, the Sky Father God.

@@DurgeshYadav-ip1zr If we listen to the beginning theme of Superman, we can here some striking tones and cords similar to Holst's 1903 Indra. When I remarked that Superman and Indra had "somethings in common", I was suggesting that both behaved in similar fashion, not to compare their philosophical, religious or technical aspects. Fundamentally, "Superman" is like a god to humans, and is especially known for his flying and command of the sky, among other amazing powers. He is also known as a generous, open-minded cosmic being, who sees only humanity and not the social and racial divisions that humans have created for themselves, much to their own great suffering.

But the entities are not similar at all, Superman like you said, is a godlike being capable of doing extraordinary things while Indra in Rigveda is simply 'God', the one and only, he is more than just God of lighting and thunder as most assume.
I am of course, discounting the fact that Superman is a comic book character.
I think I may have unlocked the secret as to why this piece is never played. I am listening to it, and it is boring me to death.
