      That's funny because I'm a scientist, I work in the field of Mycology.
      The IAT has never been scientifically verified to be able to determine behavior corollary to the bias that it supposedly uncovers. This article will explain to you the issues surrounding the IAT and has references to the relevant research: www.chronicle.com/article/can-we-really-measure-implicit-bias-maybe-not/
      The fact that some colleges use the IAT isn't a scientific argument supporting it.

    So basically the test biases your brain to associate African Americans with "bad" and then tells you to instantly switch it up so that now you have to associate white people with "bad", then probably calls you a racist based on the fact that you took longer on the second part probably because your brain is confused/getting used to the switch up.
    And the output is just gonna look like: Took 1.5 seconds on average to click on black/bad. Took 1.7 seconds on average to click on white/bad. Result: person is implicitly racist.

      @@pdpgb exactly, and if you have significantly more people with one bias compared to the other, the population has a tendency towards that bias. But I agree, on an individual level this test is pretty bad. I guess you would have to do it a bunch of times with like a week break each time in order to discover a true bias.

    • @pdpgb
      @pdpgb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@austinpowers7670 Probably is any number of factors could be influencing the longer time. Like what if the black people having darker skin makes your brain take longer to register it because of just the amount of light coming into your eyes?
      Or maybe you're just better at recognizing white people causing you to click faster. Doesn't mean you're racist at all towards non whites.
      They should try this exact same thing but with random categories like plant/animal/furniture/vehicle instead of good/bad and see the results then.
      There's no guarantee that the reason for the different reaction times is you associating the races with good/bad specifically.

    "In psychology, a measure is considered reliable if it has a test-retest reliability of at least 0.7, although it is preferred to be over 0.8. Studies have found that racial bias IAT studies have a test-retest reliability score of only 0.44, while the IAT overall is just around 0.5. The second major concern with IAT is its validity. Validity is best established by showing that results from the test can accurately predict behaviors in real life. However, from 2009 to 2015, four separate meta-analyses came out all suggesting that the IAT is a weak predictor of discriminating behavior (Goldhill, 2017)."

    Unpopular opinion:
    Saw the title and not sure where this will go although I feel like I have a fair idea how you feel about this. Watching and commenting at the same time. This test is actually based and backed by a plethora of research. Appreciate you naming things that may effect your results.
    I would also include how much work you’ve done in the area of race academically or not, etc. Everyone holds implicit bias so you stating that shows you don’t know what implicit bias means. I 💯 support these tests. The as fast as you can is not “weird” it’s picking up on implicit meaning what we’re doing without thinking.
    Richard, I truly wish I could chat with you sometime about these things because you have such a large platform you’ve worked on. If anyone wants to see that please like this comment so he has a better likely hood of seeing this. He clearly is a curious minded person and I do think he’s smart and has a desire to learn. I’ve taken these tests many times and have a video of this on my channel for awhile back.
    Everyone is bias. Richard you cannot be racist because you’re Black, as perceived in the US, even though you’re bi racial. Read more up on this Richard if you’re curious about the legitimacy of these tests. At the end of the day I’m glad you’re doing a video on the IATs. Richard, ugh, I wanted to help you while you’re taking the test, lol. They’re assessing speed as well. They keep in mind all the “mistakes” you’re talking about. All of it is a part of the test. All you have to do is follow the instructions and the results show.
    Richard, watching you laugh about this makes me sad. I’m halfway through and this is difficult to watch for me. You’re supposed to go as fast as you can. Mistakes are fine. I do agree with you about what you said about being humiliated and sadomasochism basically. It’s not weird they’re asking about Black people. This is an IAT based on race. The fact that you don’t know what they’re saying about Black culture breaks my heart too.
    You being “super into White girls” is likely a part of implicit bias. I’m a Brown person and used to say that too, now realizing that was an impact of color lightening. You’re not racist towards your own race. That you’re using the word “retarded” ugh. I appreciate you Richard and this video was super painful and cringeful to watch. Your voice raised toward the end as you were upset criticizing this test.
    Yes Richard I’m sure you know more then Harvard in the amount you’ve invested in this vs them. SMH and huge dislike 👎🏽 Also at the end you seem surprised that you have a preference for Whites when you’ve admitted multiple times in your videos that you prefer White women to other races. What exactly is hot about a White woman that isn’t inherently in Black and Brown ones?

Also probably ' wrong ', because at first you get used to the confusing controls and game associations you have to play, and when they switch them up, you start slowing down or making mistakes until you get the hang of it until they switch it again. I dunno if they take into account that when they switch it up there's a bit of re-learning every now and again, and how would they even take it into account , but it will skew your results if they don't, since it's says that it's the only thing they actually base your results on.

    This test is more of how you associate the E and I keys rather than races and good or bad. It lets you build muscle memory for each being on one side then once you have that muscle memory switches it over so you're more likely to make a mistake. The controls should not be a factor in this test

    They're testing implicit bias so split judgments based off of superficial features. If you had time to think most people would choose the most non-racial answer. I not a fan of this method but I don't know how else to judge implicit bias. So do think implicit bias is more against black people or for them?

    It test how quickly your brain can associate white as good and bad vs black people with good and bad. The inherent flaw may be accounted for with their algorithm. (Practice at this would defeat the "Implicit" part its trying to measure. The whole point is, it wants to test how easily you can sort these categories in your head. )
    You having a small preference doesn't mean you're racist to your own kind, it just means you can associate white with good slightly faster than black.

    I believe this test is counterbalanced, so there’s a 50% chance you would start with AA+good mapped to the same key instead. Taking it several times, allowing some time to pass in between tests will improve measurement accuracy.
    The questions at the end are not part of the IAT, they are for the psychologists to examine correlations between implicit associations and overtly held attitudes about race. The test doesn’t say anything about if you act upon subconscious biases, but it is helpful to know one’s biases so that you can compensate for them. Thus taking the test is itself can curb biased behavior by raising self-awareness.
    A racist is someone who knows they have a bias but feels no remorse about acting upon it. Racism isn’t too common anymore, especially when you contrast it with how people think about species. Many people declare that humans are intrinsically worth more than nonhumans on the basis of species alone, and take pride in being speciesist. That’s the evil we should be concerned about, not whether we have an implicit bias that we make an effort founded in fairness to compensate for.
    By neglecting to even study species bias, despite the far greater discrimination nonhumans experience, these scientists reveal their own implicit bigotry devoid of the very self-awareness their test seeks to provide. Ironic and hypocritical are the most charitable words I can use to address this grievous oversight.

    • @Nick_Lyston
      @Nick_Lyston 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@multishit6664 Well, the AI threat is real, and whether we survive the technological singularity will depend on whether our moral advancement has caught up with our scientific advancement by that time. If we are still speciesist at that point, the non-living non-human sentients will retaliate in a way that living nonhuman sentients lack the power to. We must stop living by Might Makes Right or we will end up dying by it. Balance is always achieved in the end, by one way or the other. And we should be grateful the universe works this way, by action and reaction. We can only truly cherish that we have gracefully and nobly earned.

  • @perplexedon9834
    @perplexedon9834 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A couple of things about this as I actually had to do a Racial bias report in a psych class for my degree. The IAT has awful test retest reliability as has been mentioned in the comments, but a lot of your criticisms don't apply as the test is designed to be done on a large volume of people, and the categories and order are randomised such that overall factors like the same key being used for bad and black first as opposed to bad and white first. The test is designed to be done super quickly under the theory that you will be faster to correctly identify items you associate, such as bad and black, and that you'll take longer to enter those when the categories contradict your bias. Of course you'll make mistakes, that's the idea. Ultimately the idea isn't too bad, but in practice studies find that it is unreliable and doesn't predict behaviour or beliefs. The test isn't biased though.

    Americans have a tendency to self-segregate to some level, and that can be seen in the cultures being described (white culture, black culture). It does exist to some extent in america, and could be something that is lost on a person from Canada, where the lines between races may be a bit more blurred and racism is less self-imposed as part of the countries zeitgeist
