Some of the greatest classic Broadway musicals that might be of interest to a young person today because they all focus on various socio-cultural groups, tensions and strife between groups, their struggles and challenges. These are also some of the most beautifully scripted, composed and choreographed musicals ever to be adapted to film, IMHO, and all with stellar casts: West Side Story (1961), My Fair Lady (1964), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), Porgy and Bess (1959), The King and I (1956), Hair (1979) and South Pacific (1958). Do you mean the 1982 version for Annie? Cause I was legit thinking about this movie. I used to watch it almost every other day growing up and Ill still randomly burst out into a song from it. Man what a throwback. 🖤
@@atmorb Hello, good morning 🌞 and YES, I absolutely DID mean 1982, I have no idea why it says 1992 🤔🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ because I'm definitely old enough to know when the original came out lol! And I agree, it's an amazing musical that I've caught myself giggling about or randomly singing as well. Carol Burnett was HILARIOUS!! (** sings in broken, off key tunes while sipping out of flask** "🎵 LiTtLe liTtLe LittLe liTTle 🎵" lmao 🤣)
Olivia was a country singer, grew up in Australia, born in the UK, her songs crossed over to pop. She thought she was too old for this movie, but John Travolta came in person to convince her. She was also in Xanadu. She had 4 fights with cancer, and raised a lot of money for a cancer hospital in aussie, and one in California.
Here's an interesting bit of trivia, the day that the bad Sandy scene was filmed was in the middle of summer in Los Angeles and the temperature was over 100 degrees. Olivia Newton John didn't drink anything the hole day because the zipper on those black leather pants was broken so she was literally sown into them. She was worried about having to use the restroom so she didn't drink anything.
The slap during the dance was a French Apache(said apachee I think) dance. Cha Cha was dress in a French cancan dress. That style of dancing trended in the 50's. The dance imitates 2 lovers fighting. The woman is hit, and sometimes she gets dragged away caveman style. Also, the hand jive was a real song and dance.
I was in high school when this came out and I loved it. I still do. It's just fun. I think a musical to watch is Burlesque with Cher and Christina Aguilera. It is super corny , but the music is amazing. They both have voices that are out of this world good..
The principal was played by Eve Arden who hadher own tv show in the 50s -- Our Miss Brooks. The guy singing Beauty School Dropout is Frankie Avalon from the beach party movies in the 60s.
I don’t know all your reactions but if you like this you would also like Dirty Dancing. Those were my top movies from those time period. I grew up watching these movies. Also if you want to watch a modern musical Pitch Perfect series are my favorite.
I was eight years old when my parents took me, my brother Danny and my cousin Sandy (living with us at the time) to the movie theater to see Grease when it came out in 1978. We went in blind; there were no advertisers or reviewers and no one screened the movies early to tell everyone about it back then. My dad decided we were going bowling and to the movies that weekend so that’s what we all did as a family. They let me, Sandy (8) and Danny (11) sit in the front row by ourselves for the first time; the rows of seating were nearly identical to baseball stadium seats except for the addition of a thin hiney cushion. Should have seen the looks I gave to my brother and cousin when I saw the characters names pop up on the ginormous screen. It was the most surreal moment of my young life. The movie was hilarious and I watched it many times when it was released on HBO, Showtime and the networks. John Travolta’s swag walk makes me laugh every single time.
This came out when I was a high school band, choir, theater geek. My friends and I would pop this album on during lunch in the band room and dance and sing along. Such good memories!
An interesting story but pure fiction. No school would let their students eat lunch in the band room. And they certainly wouldn't allow pop albums in the middle of lunch. I think it's time you told the truth.
@trhansen3244 LOL... guess you grew up in a different situation than me, because we were absolutely allowed to use the sound system in both the band and choir rooms both during lunch and after school while waiting for play or marching band rehearsals to start at 4pm. But this was back in the 70's and yeah, it probably wouldn't happen today.
Theory is that Sandy died at the beginning of the movie on the beach. The whole rest of the movie was Danny's dream. Hence the corny flying car at the end. HMMMM
Great reaction, as usual. If you're going to continue your musical journey, you definitely have to see " The Wiz ". It's a musical adaptation of the wizard of oz, with Diana Ross, and Michael Jackson. Definitely one of the best musicals ever made. You won't be disappointed.
I used to watch this movie with my mum everytime they showed up on tv and it's still my favourite memory together. Also, I think you should react to Dirty Dancing and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Both of them are like a peak in the musical movies history 👌🏻
Since you were asking about during the movie... "Mooning" was the practice of baring your behind and pressing it against a window of a car as you drive by people. And in this movie, they covered their heads during the dance so they couldn't be identified on TV.
You should check out the series as well. The series is set 4 years before the first Grease and tells how the Pink Ladies were formed. It's amazing! Shame it was canceled, but it an amazing production.
Olivia was a popular country artist in the 70s and released a pop album in the early 80s. The title track, Physical, is the biggest single of the 1980s. She was also given a State funeral in Australia when she died last year.
Great Reaction! RIP Olivia Newton John!!! #HOPELESSLYDEVOTED. You young people would never understand the ways we grew in the 70’s but still luv ya for trying ❤️
That says it nicely! Mr. Flicks appears to be a very nice young man, but how unfortunate not to know until now who Olivia Newton-John is!! Such an icon for nearly 50 years at this point! Have to give Mr. Flicks props for viewing it so openly and positively! August 8, 2022 = sad, sad day!! #RIPOLIVIANEWTONJOHN
My parents were in their early twenties when they had my oldest sister. My mom was 20, and my dad was 23. But, yeah, you're right not everyone is in their thirties and start to have kids at that age. It's perfectly okay to be younger and have kids.
Fun fact in the broadway musical Rizzo isn't making fun of sandy during look at me am Sandra dee she was pointing out the irony about people who are seen as a pure and innocent but are still over s*xualized and how Sanda dee (whos a real actress) was only putting on an act. Sandy assumes that Rizzo is talking about her. Also, the song "You're the one that I want " is meant to be an agreement between the two to have Danny respect sandy. She didn't change herself for Danny. She dressed that was to get his attention to be like, "Look at what you're missing out on." I love this movie
Grease is one of my top 5 favorite movies for sure, it’s absolutely iconic and so, so nostalgic to me 🥰 Rest in peace, miss Olivia ❤️ I hope you react to Grease 2, as well. it’s not very highly praised lol and it’s not a sequel by any means, it’s an entirely different cast, and it’s not nearly as good, but it’s almost a “so bad, it’s good/fun” type of movie.
The movie was filmed in 1978, but set in the 1950's...not sure if he caught that. So, this would have been school from 70 YEARS AGO...whoa, let that sink in!
@@mrflickswatches a lot of people on here kind of adopt a “TH-cam voice” that isn’t authentic. It’s like very over expressive lol. But you just seem like you’re being yourself and that’s refreshing lol
What he gave her is a class ring. it usually meant that they were going steady. Other ways of basically the same thing would be to give the girlfriend their varsity jacket. So to get a class ring would be a big deal as it was his way of saying, you are the one I want to go steady with. got to remember, this is the 50s. Way different time.
If you wanna go to a party like that, google swing dancing in your area, that’s what they’re doing. After most swing dancing classes there will be a “social” dance, meaning anyone is invited (for a small fee, around here it’s $5-15). There’s at least three every week where I live, at different spots too - and the classes here are usually free or cheap (and I’m in Denver, a moderately expensive city). Most people wear 1920s-1950s inspired aesthetics, it’s a grand ole time. I strongly suggest taking at least one class before going to a social, mostly for your own comfort and ability. Even if all you remember from class is the basic step, it’s so much fun to practice with and learn from others. Even just watching others dance is *so* inspiring. Swing dancing is where it’s at, and there’s a community in almost every city. Have fun
Rizzo is my favourite in this. She is in the epitome of hard shell gooey insides. Her song "There are Worse Things I Can Do" is also my favourite song in this. I love the vulnerability of it.
Olivia Newton-John was a HUGE singer. She was born in England, raised in Australia and originally came to the US & had hit songs on the Billboard Country Singles chart. Her "first" huge hit was "I Honestly Love You" that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1974. There was a huge age difference in this movie as she was 30 years old (playing a high school senior) when this was released & became life-long friends with John Travolta (they would do another movie together in 1983 called "Two Of A Kind"). "Hopelessly Devoted To You" was specifically written for her to sing in this movie (it hit #3 on the Hot 100 Chart). "Summer Nights" peaked at #5 & "You're The One I Want" went to #1. Olivia had the biggest song of the entire decade for the 1980s, when the biggest hit of her career, "Physical" went to #1 and stayed there for 10 consecutive weeks at the end of 1981 to the beginning of 1982. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and originally defeated it with her going into remission but sadly it came back and it was what eventually took her life in 2022 just about a month and half shy of her 74th birthday.
I remember my mum showed me this when I was like 5/6 and it was on vhs. As soon as the movie ended I rewound it back to the start and watched it all over again 🤣
Hair gel? They're not wearing gel, they're wearing grease - thus the movie's name. And they didn't know cigarettes were bad for you back in the 1950s. The problem in the first place was not that Danny was ashamed of Sandy, the problem is that he was trying to act cool in front of his friends - being cool in the 1950s meant, you didn't get overly excited about things and, if you were a guy, you especially didn't get overly excited over a chick; and if you were a girl, you were the kind of girl who didn't say no (though that meant you had a bad reputation). The 50s were pretty misogynistic. why are you talking about 70s and 80s parties? The movie was made in the 70s but takes place in the 50s.
Enjoyed your reaction. Sandy (Olivia) died of cancer at age 73. Some of my favorite musicals are Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserable (Hugh Jackman), Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Depp), La La Land,
Musical suggestion agreement: Singin’ in the Rain. It’s SO much fun, and iconic for a reason. The dancing and performances and over the fucking top amazing, impressive, athletic, all the things. And the singing is so beautiful.

I was 9 years old when i saw grease when it originally came out in the movie theaters in 1978. Saw it with my then best friend, a fellow fanatic about the movies. We talked, read, ate, drank, and slept the movies. And we went to the movies together once a week for a lot of years from the 1970s-1980s. There was no particular reason we went to see Grease. We tried to see all the new movies coming out as much as we could regardless of the genre (he loved horror movies, i preferred comedies), plot, critics reviews, or who starred in it. And Grease just happened to be one of the new movies that just came out. I dont exactly recall my friends reaction (except that he was very much amused by the Greased Lightning number), but i loved it right from the very first viewing. It quickly became my number one favorite movie. The fact that actors in their 20s-30s were portraying teenaged high school seniors didnt faze me in the least. Because to my 9 year old eyes, in real life, teenaged high school seniors were grown up people. Practically adults. So, seeing adults in their 20s-30s portray teens in the movie, i really couldnt tell the difference at the time. You wouldn’t think that a movie such as Grease would appeal to a 9 year old boy, but it did. Being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional household, it managed to hit me in the very right places at the very right time. So, I say to the actors and the behind the camera crew of Grease, from the bottom of the heart of an abused boy, thank you all very, very much.
What a lovely reaction! I just found you, and you have a new subscriber. I saw Grease about seven times in the theater when I was 8 years old back in the day and it was just the biggest movie the world had ever seen. And, John Travolta was devastated as we all were when Olivia passed and he gave a special little tribute to her at the Oscars this year. She really didn't do many films but was a fantastic singer and this film was enough to make her a legend forever. ❤
I have to be honest, growing up, I knew there were innuendos, but I forgot how many there actually were. And when I was a kid, I had a thing for Frenchie and Marty Maraschino. They weren't Topanga, Kelly Kapowski, Brandy, Monica, Myra from Family Matters, Mya or the middle daughter from Step By Step, but it's hard to beat a 90s girl.

Beauty School Dropout is my favorite song. It's just something about it being so serious and shady at the same time. Lol
Well, they couldn't teach you anything
You think you're such a looker
But no customer would go to you
Unless she was a hooker
🤣
I really love the second film as well
Michelle Pfeifer killed it
Also La La Land is completely rated, shit was talked about massively when it released
I actually like grease 2 better than grease. That and Xanadu are two of my guilty pleasures.
@@thomasbradley4505 yeah as much as i adore the original
Theres just something special in my heart for the 2nd as well
Just here making sure someone said this! Love Michelle Pfeiffer and Lorna Luft in that movie
Found my people. 😂 Somehow 2 was my favorite from the beginning and I still listen to the soundtrack.❤
Sound of Music older musical. Can't believe you noticed the "trainers" shoes they wore.
I saw it in the theater for its 20th anniversary. It would have been #1 at the box office except for a little movie called The Titanic,
i'm almost 58, old school parties are my specialty.
I'm 46(almost 47), my father is 74 and I know what a sock hop is… at least that's better than most people, even from my gen…
I don’t know all your reactions but if you like this you would also like Dirty Dancing. Those were my top movies from those time period. I grew up watching these movies. Also if you want to watch a modern musical Pitch Perfect series are my favorite.
Pitch perfect movies are coming as well !
Kewl story
Love this movie and Olivia Newton-John so much that my cat is named after her!
I've seen Grease hundreds of times, but I've never laughed so hard! You have a new fan here, for life!
I first saw this movie as a young teenager and loved it. But omg, your commentary cracked me up. 😄 Very fun reaction!
Jesus Christ Superstar is a pretty insane one, preformance wise the original one naturally :)
Agree if I remember it came out in 1973 … god I feel so old !!!!!
Iconic! I was a 50's poodle skirt girl for like, 3 Halloween's, because of this movie.
Little Shop of Horror! Def a Halloween musical. Great reaction!
That song is called beauty school dropout is sung by Frankie Avalon
The Blob 1988 is definitely worth a reaction.
A special gesture (like a ring) at the right time can make a big difference.
Okay … that one I have seen ! And the wizard of oz lol
Good. Okay suggestion number two and three. Xanadu, also Olivia Newton John, and Greece 2. Just as good if not better than the first. Guaranteed.
Grease 2 isn't very good but that's just my opinion. @@kendonovin
I used to watch this movie with my mum everytime they showed up on tv and it's still my favourite memory together. Also, I think you should react to Dirty Dancing and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Both of them are like a peak in the musical movies history 👌🏻
Olivia's music catalog is quite impressive. Beautiful voice, RIP.
Since you were asking about during the movie... "Mooning" was the practice of baring your behind and pressing it against a window of a car as you drive by people. And in this movie, they covered their heads during the dance so they couldn't be identified on TV.
Burlesque is another musical you've gotta check out! Cher and Christina Aguilera were *ICONIC* !!!
If you want to see 2 great older musicals, My Fair Lady, and Little Shop of Horrors. They are 2 classics.
My favourite is "Oliver".
You should check out the series as well. The series is set 4 years before the first Grease and tells how the Pink Ladies were formed. It's amazing! Shame it was canceled, but it an amazing production.
I hope you watch the second one it doesn’t deserve the hate it gets
Yes it does but I will give it Cool Rider
@@dakert40cool rider saved that movie 😂 I only watch it for that
I absolutely hate Grease 2. Not a single memorable song or dance in the whole film. Lifeless sequel.
@@trhansen3244 I love Grease 2 and "Cool Rider" is AWESOME!
@@LittleBlueOwl318 You should be deported immediately!
Good fun watching this reaction. It' obvious you get it. Even though she's passed, you're carrying it on.
Indeed ✔️🙏🏼
Fun fact in the broadway musical Rizzo isn't making fun of sandy during look at me am Sandra dee she was pointing out the irony about people who are seen as a pure and innocent but are still over s*xualized and how Sanda dee (whos a real actress) was only putting on an act. Sandy assumes that Rizzo is talking about her. Also, the song "You're the one that I want " is meant to be an agreement between the two to have Danny respect sandy. She didn't change herself for Danny. She dressed that was to get his attention to be like, "Look at what you're missing out on." I love this movie
Another musical with ONJ is Xanadu. She had such a beautiful voice. Great reaction!
This movie is very iconic! One of the best musicals of all time. 2 is a great movie too! ❤
Grease is one of my top 5 favorite movies for sure, it’s absolutely iconic and so, so nostalgic to me 🥰 Rest in peace, miss Olivia ❤️
I hope you react to Grease 2, as well. it’s not very highly praised lol and it’s not a sequel by any means, it’s an entirely different cast, and it’s not nearly as good, but it’s almost a “so bad, it’s good/fun” type of movie.
The movie was filmed in 1978, but set in the 1950's...not sure if he caught that. So, this would have been school from 70 YEARS AGO...whoa, let that sink in!
I really like that you speak naturally instead of using a “TH-cam” voice. Makes the reaction that much better lol
Explain what you mean by that exactly lol 👀
@@mrflickswatches a lot of people on here kind of adopt a “TH-cam voice” that isn’t authentic. It’s like very over expressive lol. But you just seem like you’re being yourself and that’s refreshing lol
@@hailmaary8616 ohhh I get you yeah I’m myself at all times! All my videos give the same energy! So thank you 🙏🏼
Grease 2 is underrated imo it has some amazing songs
Have fun
Might have to check that out ! Thanks ! 🔥
You got to see Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta his dancing is fabulous the music song from The Bee Gees fabulous
So many musicals to see! I definitely recommend exploring Sondheim’s work, alongside Roger and Hammerstein’s musicals. So much fun! :)
The Sound of Music is classic.
Rizzo is my favourite in this. She is in the epitome of hard shell gooey insides. Her song "There are Worse Things I Can Do" is also my favourite song in this. I love the vulnerability of it.
I forget how young you are. When I was young, this movie, Saturday night fever and Star Wars were the shit. I love watching people react to them.
The football player that Sandy dates is actually played by Lorenzo Lamas.
FYI, ONJ was 28 when the movie was filmed in 1977, at 29 when it was released in June of 1978, She didn't turned 30 until September 26, 1978.
I remember my mum showed me this when I was like 5/6 and it was on vhs. As soon as the movie ended I rewound it back to the start and watched it all over again 🤣
I feel you lol I used to do that with Men in Black 🤣
@@mrflickswatches that’s a great one too 😆
@@NikkieTwix my next musicals are Hamilton and The greatest showman
Idk if you’ve seen either but excited for those! 🔥
They had sew Sandy into those pants. And the look started a fashion trend after this movie came out. The tops, the pants and the shoes.
Olivia was a singer first and then became an actress she was great at both
Enjoyed your reaction. Sandy (Olivia) died of cancer at age 73. Some of my favorite musicals are Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserable (Hugh Jackman), Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Depp), La La Land,
Fun fact: the leather pants Olivia Newton John wore at the end… they sewed them directly onto her legs each time they filmed this scene
As a theater kid, Grease was probably my favorite musical I was part of in school.
I don’t understand how people have so much energy in the mornings
Rizzo played one of the Aunts in Practical Magic
Musical suggestion agreement: Singin’ in the Rain. It’s SO much fun, and iconic for a reason. The dancing and performances and over the fucking top amazing, impressive, athletic, all the things. And the singing is so beautiful.
I love this movie musicals are one of my favorite genres and my favorite character is between Frenchie and Rizzo I sing there are worst things I could do a lot it’s one of my go to songs for karaoke night this was such a great reaction I just recently watched cry-baby it’s really good that’s one I’d like to see you and your lady watch together or Chicago if you haven’t seen it 🫶🏽🍿🔥
I was 9 years old when i saw grease when it originally came out in the movie theaters in 1978.
31:58 among musical theatre students memorising and correctly reciting this song is considered a milestone
I have so much fun "watching" movies with you. You seem like a genuinely nice and fun guy.
“You’re cruising for a bruising”
My mom used to use that line on me when I was a kid 😅
What a lovely reaction! I just found you, and you have a new subscriber. I saw Grease about seven times in the theater when I was 8 years old back in the day and it was just the biggest movie the world had ever seen. And, John Travolta was devastated as we all were when Olivia passed and he gave a special little tribute to her at the Oscars this year. She really didn't do many films but was a fantastic singer and this film was enough to make her a legend forever. ❤
Welcome 🙏🏼
I have to be honest, growing up, I knew there were innuendos, but I forgot how many there actually were. And when I was a kid, I had a thing for Frenchie and Marty Maraschino. They weren't Topanga, Kelly Kapowski, Brandy, Monica, Myra from Family Matters, Mya or the middle daughter from Step By Step, but it's hard to beat a 90s girl.
Do not not miss out on the 1940s and 50s it was the heyday of musicals and there are far too many to mention … west side story in 61 was amazing too
I would add a few movies from the 30s, such as Born to Dance and Broadway Melody of 1936. And just about any Astaire & Rogers is going to entertain.
