Wonderful early recording. I'll say, I've not been as saddened by the passing of any other singer or actor or known person as I have been of Gordon's. May he rest well and at ease for his life well spent, his music entrenched into our hearts and minds and souls ♥
I can't thank you enough for posting this. For a number of years I had been hoping to hear it again. I was a senior in HS in Ohio in 1965 when I turned on the TV and caught the middle of this performance of Early Morning Rain. I just learning how to play guitar and was blown away. I immediately decided I had to buy a 12 string guitar. Over the next few years I paid my way through college playing folk music. I still play this song and so glad I could hear this broadcast again
Of great historical interest. Lightfoot actually recorded JLTTB a couple of weeks before Dylan did, but Bob's version got released sooner. It was a GL single, but not released on an album for another 30 years. Lightfoot's first gigantic media exposure.
I just tried to sit through a guy named Jack Jones singing If You Could Read My Mind on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was so syrupy and sweet that I couldn’t make it halfway through it. Gordon has a special voice and his songs are not conducive to sweetening up. I do like Peter, Paul and Mary’s version of Early Morning Rain. They were very special, too.
Interesting to hear how his vocal style evolved. Much more country balladeer at this point. Even the renunciation of "plane" and train". Still has a good bit of vibrato at spots. Less of his deeper-sounding delivery and more nasal. Fascinating to me.
Yes, very interesting. One thinks a singer is born with their natural voice (e.g., his distinctive vibrato). But Lightfoot purposely evolved from his early singing.
Sounds quite dated unfortunately .... love Dylan love lightfoot...but this particular performance of just like Tom thumbs blues nah....early morning rain was alot better
Yeah, surprising that he would do a Dylan song (especially with those God awful background vocals and horn section that was pre-recorded) on what was probably his first national show and being such a great writer on his own. Glad he did Early Morning Rain too.
It IS dated. That's the point. This is a performance rescued from 1965 for an audience today, not to compare it with other times but to listen to it within the context of THAT moment.

I agree totally. I am saddened too of his passing. I considered him in his music as peaceful and inspiring. I will miss him.

Great stuff. Early Carson shows are like gold. And being a lifelong Lightfoot fan, this is a special treat. Thank you for this!
Gordon sings Bob ... damn .... love the horns
Miss you Gord. RIP. Please save a seat for me, see you up there singing with the angels.
RIP ❤ Gordon.! ACanadian icon.
May god bless gordon.
A Canadian icon, that also became part of us, that are not Canadians. A very special, Gift.
✨🕊✨
wow that performance of early morning rain.
It's a shame the video footage is missing
Canada's favorite singer.
Along with the other Gordan❤
In Australia Neil Young is Australia's favourite Canadian singer
In the early morning rain... one of my favourites sung by my favourite Canadian!

So glad you have the chance to hear it again.
Great sound. Thank you

I have several hedy Lamar films but not this one , thanks for allowing me the pleasure of viewing it 😊

Love that blues rhythm in the singing.
Wow,Gordon sings Dylan.Can’t believe it’s 65.His first album was 67 I think.
He had already recorded his first album at this time, but Albert Grossman was still shopping it to the record labels.
He recorded his first album in late 65 came out in 66❤
Thank you for posting! ♥️
Ich war 1965 in Toronto , sogar in Orillia, ich hätte ihn gerne persönlich kennengelernt.
RIP Gordon
This is a new one for me after being a huge fan for so long great version of that Dylan tune
4:08 Early Morning Rain
LOVE GORDYS VOCALS..MANY GREAT SONGS
yeah, but the backing-vocals here sounds like recorded on a mental hospital

At a time when the country was enamored with the Beatles, it’s no wonder GL didn’t make a bigger splash.
Lightfoot puts out his 21st Album next week and begins his 53rd year of touring? When does the Beatles put out their next album or perform next?
@@normpaddle You got that right bud.
Great, thanks for posting!
Wow!!!
Terrible song for a US NATIONAL DEBUT
I agree Doug...I hate those background vocals..
I always thought it was a shame that Gordon and Bob Dylan never made an album together.
I would buy the hell out of that album!
Both are in their 80's.....
They're good friends .
They jammed a lot together !
They were besties . . .
Good version of EMR - I find the album version a bit heavy-handed although this is still my favourite song of all time.
So Gordon, who like Dylan, was managed by Albert Grossman, performs a Dylan song.
I need the video footage okay?
Gordon Lightfoot wrote In the Early Morning Rain, and Peter, Paul, and Mary made it a hit, but Gord’s version is much better.
Sounds quite dated unfortunately .... love Dylan love lightfoot...but this particular performance of just like Tom thumbs blues nah....early morning rain was alot better

Early mornin' rain is phenomenal. I think Jerry Lee' s cover on The London Sessions is number 2
In the new light of his passing it is iconic.
@@nighthawk292 Will look for the Killer's version. Thanks.
A Dylan Song about getting The Clap in Juarez.or El Paso.
