I just used the link after having already booked through Hertz for Toyota Land Cruiser equivalent w/standard insurance ($2250 total). Realized after going back that there was an excess and admin fee etc etc. By using the code here, i saved USD$540 off my Blue Car rental -- only paying about $75 more than the original Hertz rental, but with zero liability. Also I can check in online up to 7 days in advance and skip the line, apparently! That was a huge time suck back in 2023 at EuropCar counter in-terminal (about 45 mins waiting in line). The Blue Car building is about 4 minutes walk from the terminal (or take the shuttlebus - in May 2023 it was sleeting and no way would I have walked). Decently close! Thanks for the advice and the code.
I’ve visited Iceland yearly since 2010 and have rented solely from Avis. There are always Americans (and I’m an American) getting into arguments with the return agents. Iceland has perils that few other countries have. If you travel east of Vik, then I highly recommend one purchase sand and ash coverage. Opening car doors which get grabbed by the wind is another. This lady is 100% correct - I purchase all of the insurances available. I’ll check out Blue Car rentals on my next trip.
If people are wondering about renting an EV in Iceland, I visited Iceland in August-September 2023. We rented a four-wheel-drive Tesla for the camp mode option, and there were many charging stations along the Ring Road. Charging was included in the rental, which was a very good deal for driving thousands of kilometers. I don't want to advertise the rental place, but it was one of the cheapest ones we found, with insurance included. To sum it up, an EV with four-wheel drive is a good pick for a rental car in Iceland, at least in the autumn.
I've just came back and I nearly got just the basic package but I folded and took the platinum. 100 quid. I'll explain my reasons though. I drive mostly in the Uk and I'm left handed so I was doing everything backward with my weaker hand. I ended up not actually needing it but I think the peace of mind was handy. There was a couple of close misses when I was changing lane and I nearly span it twice on black ice. Hey ho.
Think of Iceland as driving on a different planet rather than driving in a different country and you’ll realize why the added insurance is an excellent idea. Coolest country ever!
The "third party insurance", i.e. insurance against any damage you might cause to other, innocent users of the road is MANDATORY in Iceland - and in Europe, for that matter. You will simply not be ALLOWED to skimp on being insured any damage you might cause to other innocent road users. Icelandic authorities will come down on you like twenty tons of bricks if you try to skip out of that one!
Hey, I did not get the discount when I used the link you have mentioned. It showed me the same price which I could see earlier as well. Can you please share the discount coupon or a correct link?
I recommend checking out my company Happy Campers, if you sign up for my email list you can get a discount on your rental! icelandwithaview.com/hc-discount/
Do you know if the cars provided by Blue Car Rentals are well maintained? Per a few reviews, I've seen concerns about the vehicles' maintenance problems.
@IcelandwithaView Lagoon is located with Blue in Reykjavik but is cheaper. Does Lagoon just rent out the older, beat up vehicles? Also, discount code didn't work
Lagoon is located same building as Blue in Reykjavik but about 10% cheaper. I've seen photos in reviews of Lagoon cars having bald tires, etc. Is Lagoon just the "used" version of Blue? Discount code for Blue didn't work😢

Absolutely, great comparison!
Does your own insurance from your own country (eg America) or from your credit card cover the car in Iceland like it does elsewhere?
Not sure, you'd have to check with Blue Car on that one.
I just check blue car rental ..found so many insurances to choose 😂 and also gps wifi ..etc all separated
