Sorry to say that I agree that the 3d humans are a step backward. A lot of the nuance of the human performance is just not there in the animated CG human. (0:49) It's super noticeable in the first two humans of the game (from the demo). Also, due to the lighting engine having to be a little more flat to cater for more viewpoints from the player... some of the dramatic stills with high contrast and deep shadows kinda get washed out, which takes away from some of the magnificent set pieces. (0:38) But then even outside, it looks like the colour palette and contrast has been subdued a bit (0:29). And there are art direction changes too. One of the coolest "rides" was underwater (0:51)... Rings of energy that kept the crystal blue water away from the track... so cool...and now this is so dark so you cannot see you're underwater anymore. At 0:57, the islands above are clearly "better" as they fit more into the world, they're the islands in water and the control panel is a representation of their "natural" formation... in the remastered game, the "islands" look more like tetris puzzle pieces, breaking the connection to why they are placed in water (unless they're all alcatrazzes). It was fun to see and make these connections in the old game... leaps of deduction by paying close attention to the details. I hope this isn't an indication of how they've dumbed the puzzles down. I love all things Cyan. Played them all multiple times. Myst has the distinguished honour of being my first Apple Macintosh game in 1994. That was also my first mac. Criticisms aside, I will definitely buy the title as I wish nothing but love and success to the folks of Cyan who've gifted me some of my most memorable gaming moments and hope they've got more Myst-like games coming soon.
Could not agree more. It's amazing to me that after 27 years of technological advancement, it was not possible to make an objectively better version of the game. Of course, being able to roam in full 3D is an objective improvement and will be amazing to experience (especially looking forward to trying it in VR)! It is just a shame that the compromises that have come along with that have meant that this remake is overall looking to be an inferior experience to the original. My main disappointment is definitely the loss of the human performances! The ideal result would be to combine this full 3D, freely explorable world with the original FMV performances. I wonder if in the future some bright community member may find a way to mod this remake and somehow splice those original FMV scenes into place! Or perhaps a future patch could bring a great improvement to the quality of those CG characters. In the demo they currently look rather like wax sculptures and don't appear to be the same quality as the world they have been placed in. I have to say though, all of this is a testament to just how phenomenal the original Riven is. What a masterpiece! 27 years later and it still can't be beaten. And perhaps it is not such a bad thing for the original to not be superseded entirely. I am very grateful to Cyan for ensuring that Riven has been kept up-to-date to work on modern machines so we can all continue to enjoy it and share it with others now and into the future!
The original is still the best in my opinion. For me, a lot of the atmosphere and magic is lost in the remakes. And I prefer the live actors. I wish they would have done the remak in the same way as the original, with still renders. It's still nice they remade it all the same.
I don't like to say this, but I agree. Of course I will purchase though because I like the game, but that sucks. They did the same mistakes in the previous Myst remake, the "look and feel" of the game is totally lost. They failed to mimic properly the genuine colors, contrast, lighting of the game. Sad.
@@luckyfuzz1478 Have you played the Demo? This is nothing like the Myst remake. That changed up the entire graphical tone and feel of the world whereas this is extremely faithful. There's opinions that are just flat out wrong and this is one of them.

Bad acting, especially the intro sequence when arriving on Riven. If you call that "extremely faithful", your eyes must be half closed. But I won't argue with you, no time to lose.
Cyan did an amzing job with this one. Captures the original atmosphere and vibe perfectly, while changing many details and riddles, so it's woth re-playing for Riven veterans too. And VR as well! The Myst remake was by far not on that level, I'm so happy they took their time and effort to make Riven right.
I played the demo while also running the original on another monitor, and I was kinda surprised by just how much is different. lots of changes to the puzzles, presumable so they will work better in VR. also theres a new maglev track, or at least a track that wasn't rendered originally, so i think there may be some new content. The room with the cage chair thing near the mosaic room at the start is in an entirely new location too. Aside from that, the game so far seems to be super close to the original, and it looks gorgeous.
The world and environment look amazing in this remake! But I wish so much that they could have found a way to retain the FMV performances of the actors. So much is lost by switching to these 3D models. I have a group of friends who have never played the original and I was going to suggest for them to wait for the remake and play that. But now that I’ve seen what the new animated characters look like, I am going to have to suggest they just play the original instead. I will still take a look at this remake myself just to enjoy being able to explore Riven in full 3D. The environment artists really have done a phenomenal job.

Absolutely agree with you on this one. Even if it meant introducing a few obvious pixels for the FMV scenes, the original acting was fantastic and immersed you in the world in ways the new animated models already don't.
Sometimes it is better, sometimes not, now it will all move a bit, the old version had the advantage that the image was still. Replacing humans with bad computer models is not a good idea. It is clearly a regression instead of a progress.
It’s the remake of one of the best selling graphic adventure ever made and a masterpiece of game design. It’s all about exploration, logic and hard puzzle solving, a true journey. If you like more action games it could be the wrong choice (and it’s ok!), but if you love loose yourself in a fantastic world in a mesmerizing journey, PLAY IT, spend your intelligence, your attention, your deduction skill to solve puzzle masterfully integrated with the plot. I LOVE Riven, so I am not objective, but I assure you these things are recognized by great parte of the critic. Is it well aged? IMO yes, but it’s subjective.
Looks like it has lost the hot, bright Mediterranean summer vacation look of the original, and the FMV scenes are replaced with badly modelled 3D, like the Myst remake. Cyan has never been good at character modelling. Original Riven was - and after looking at this version still is - my favourite game of all time.
Yes, characters are not top notch, but give it a try thanks to the demo, I think you will notice the soul of the game is still there and graphics is outstanding! I am an old fan of Riven and I also see some shots remain better on the original, but this is better in other ways. More, I’ll look forward to play it in VR.

Agree with most of this but the contrast differences are only present in this trailer. The game still has those dark blacks and stark contrasts.
Stylistically the fire bursting across the page to open the linking book portal can’t be beaten 🔥

They really should have kept the fmv's. Some of the photo realism is lost in replacing them with performance capture.

The remake is AMAZING, I am playing the demo on a Steamdeck, but the original is still unbelievable…
