Another bit that Bob did on Steve Allen's show was as a guy who had spent years training a bird to speak and do complex tricks. After a lengthy build up Bob accidentally lets the bird escape the cage and the bird flew up into the rafters of the studio. Bob does a complete deadpan as he comes to understand that his life's work is lost due to a moments inattention. The bit worked because of Bob's flat expression and his incredible deadpan.

Master of the deadpan. No one could just stay in character forever like that like Bob Einstein. It became quite a trademark. It's too bad Steve didn't have confidence in the audience to catch on. Hey, if someone at home didn't get it, well, maybe they should be watching something else. Steve was always pretty hip. Remember Steve's comeback to an audience member who asked him they get his show back in Cleveland. Steve: "Well, they watch it, but they don't get it."

In Bob's best bit with Steve Allen, Bob played a martial arts guy who repeatedly requested that Steve attack him with a 2×4 from different angles. Each time, Steve successfully clobbered Bob, demonstrating Bob's character's ineptitde as a supposed self-defense professional. It was a comedy classic and fifty years later, I still chuckle. I hope that segment was preserved and eventually finds its way to TH-cam.

Bob Einstein passed away on January 2, 2019, at the age of 76, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm series creator Larry David said in a statement: "Never have I seen an actor enjoy a role the way Bob did playing 'Marty Funkhouser' on Curb. It was an amazing, unforgettable experience knowing and working with him. There was no one like him, as he told us again and again. We're all in a state of shock." And sitting next to Bob, is Pat Harrington, Jr., who could also deliver lines with perfect deadpan. Just for fun, you might enjoy this clip of Pat playing against James Coburn in the 1967 (ahead of its time) comedy film The President's Analyst: th-cam.com/video/s2NNZdigSXg/w-d-xo.html
