I recently returned to faith and recommitted my life to Jesus after being an atheist for the past 12 years or so. One of the biggest things that brought me back to Christ was the current culture war. Even though I was a self-professing atheist, I found myself on the same side as Christians in the culture war. I found it odd that the same people who were claiming to be the rational thinkers who follow the science, were the same ones completely denying science when it didn't fit their narrative. So much of the secular liberal ideology is an assault on reality, and no one is allowed to question or disagree with the "official" narrative, no matter how absurd it is. I became frustrated, and I didn't know what to believe or who to believe anymore. I prayed, "God, I don't know if you are real, and I don't know if anyone is listening to me right now, but if you are real, please lead me back to you." God answered my prayer, and I've experienced a total transformation of my heart and mind. I find that I'm no longer angry all the time, I don't have the depressive thoughts as before, and I have a newfound desire to know God.

So it wasn't because you had a good reason to believe, it was fear-based. Well at least you're admitting it's emotional rather than intellectual.
I don't see what you're saying about society at all though, since to me valuing the well-being of others is justified for purely rational reasons: because their well-being _is_ my well-being. I just has some delicious pierogies that I'd had delivered by an online website, which were prepared by various other companies and the goods (ingredients, final product, my grocery load) were delivered by various driver. When you add up all the people involved in that order, it's easily over a hundred people _whose well-being was required for me to have enjoyed those pierogies._
Well that's an argument for valuing well-being, for cooperating, for pursuing civilization, _that doesn't require deluding ourselves that a god exists._
But that obviously on top of that purely rational argument, _people are also empathetic,_ and so they're likely to behave this way anyway. (You probably weren't a complete jerk to everyone while an atheist. Personally I'm quite polite to everyone and when I wish them to have a great day I do genuinely mean it.)

The atheism ultimately is impossible for anyone to live consistently, especially when God gives someone that humble spirit to know the truth and with people like you, the eventually find their way back to the shepherd because he has gone out looking for you. When you heard his voice calling, you recognized it and thank God you are here again.

    • @tonygoodkind7858
      @tonygoodkind7858 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@bobbymarcum772 A humble attitude towards truth means refusing to believe we know unknown ideas -- it means believing only good ideas (ideas supported by evidence). So humble people, when they realize nobody has strong, logical evidence of a god _don't believe in gods._
Is it impossible to live consistent with your non-belief in leprechauns? Well, yes. It is impossible, because non-belief doesn't involve any "living strategy" at all, so to say it's impossible to live consistently with that is pretty nonsensical, yeah? Well your comment about "living consistently" with atheism is exactly like that.

According to the survey data, for every 1 person who converts to Christianity there are over 10 people who are leaving it, so at least relatively few new people will fall victim to these ancient superstitions.

When I broke and gave myself over to Christ after repenting, then started becoming conservative.....it's a bag of different reasons. One day I was listening to Hitchens, then JBP.....JBPs bible series pushed me to listening to Mike Winger....and I broke. Now, I'm not perfect, but I am trying, many of my sins ....addictions, and my anger/anxiety.....gone. Not always completely. I still struggle with the anxiety part, but not as bad. I can identify with what is happening to some of these secular thinkers. 50 years ago I too was an unbeliever struggling with the logical consequences of unbelief - meaninglessness, purposelessness, etc. To me evangelical Christians were either hypocrites or simpletons. I mocked them. Non-evangelical Christians were Christian in name only - basically secular humanists in a thinly veiled disguise. Not worth taking seriously as Christ followers.
My problem with Christianity was that I thought it wasn't true. Then I got to know somebody well, who was an evangelical Christian and was also both genuine and intelligent. I decided Christianity might be true after all. In order to test this I decided to look at the evidence - both historical and experiential. Only when both were convincing would I believe. The historical part was the easier and quicker thing to sort out. The experiential took longer because when I found God responding to my prayers I thought I might be deluded. Eventually I could deny Him no more. Since then life has become all that I expected and much more. Not easy, but so fulfilling. Sometimes the answers to prayer have been amazing. I can't thank Jesus enough.

The uber-religious and the militant Atheists can be very dogmatic in their views, and I'm glad he did not fall into the militant category. My other friend took my compliment as intended when I said I thought he would make a great Jesuit. He was not averse to the praise at all.

@@martok2112 I used to be anti-theist myself. I listened to some pretty…dare I say abysmal…atheist podcasts (yeah, I’m talking about you Atheist Experience of Austin. Matt Dillahunty, you’re a buffoon) where to hear them talk, you’d think Theism was some kind of pandemic laying waste to all peoples. My dad turned pretty religious after my mom died and for years it became a wall between us. He used to try and get me to go to church with him on his Birthday or Fathers Day…any time he felt he could just about goad me to go, out of guilt because it was “his” day and it was what he wanted.
I made a deal with him; I’ll go to church with you, but it can’t be your church.
So we went; Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Mormon, Unitarian (what my dad called the “hippie church” - saw chanting monks there), Southern Baptist, Protestant, Presbyterian, a fairly lively Pentecostal…and you know what?
Not a single one of them did anything but sing some songs aloud, give a “pep talk” and spend just a little time together.
So, I dropped the anti-theist side and began to understand a little better.

Brilliant conversation! The current climate of our culture cannot last. After 2 years of seriously studying what has happened within our culture and the unfortunate demise of the church in Europe and progressively in America, I have arrived at the same conclusions. It warms my heart to hear "big brain" people who remain atheists actually believing that the mess we're in is due to the decline of the church and how they want that back. I love the reference to the "walking wounded." Everything that everyone appears to want and need has a solution...and that solution is the God of the Scriptures...the Jesus of redemption...the wisdom...the ancient wisdom of the Scriptures. I cannot wait!!! Churches need to prepare themselves right now and be ready for it. I also have seen that God is purifying the church. The church needs to change to be more in line with God's ideal rather than the culture. If we change to match the culture then all those disillusioned souls will have no place to go. But since it seems most conceptions of god require us humans to 1st humble ourselves by seeing ourselves as worthless first, and then this deity can start the lines of communication, it’s got a strange way of being love. I grew up in the church and it was an important part of my adolescent life, but I just didnt feel like I could honestly say I believed in God when I didn't. I liked my church, I liked the lessons the Bible taught me, but I was not comfortable saying I was a Christian when I wasnt sure if God actually existed (and I didnt want to lie about my doubt anymore, so I walked away in college).
I gave up my agnostism the night of 3/14/23 (a lot of factors, but the birth of my son was especially important to me humbling myself and asking for help from God). That night, I made the decision to at least consider that God DOES exist, and all these spiritual/religious aren't crazy and were being serious about being able to actually have the God if the universe as a part of my day to day life and beliefs..... This is not an exaggeration: the moment I had that thought and committed to at least acting/behaving as if God existed... God showed up. It struck me like a bolt of lightning made of pure love, and as I held my baby boy in my arms, it felt like I was finally letting God hold me.
It was overwhelming. Like a mix of a roller coaster and drinking from a firehose. I've taken MANY drugs over the years and am quite familiar with being high... this was different. Different to the point that I wrote the date down in a journal (that I hadn't opened in years) because it seemed important. I was confused as to how moments after being "agnostic", God seemingly became the only thing I WAS sure is real. It was the first time I understood why someone would "fear" God/the Truth.
It is overwhelming, and continues to be, but it brought me the first true peace, happiness, contentment, HOPE, guidance, and purpose in life than I've ever felt as an adult. And I've been lucky to witness a miracle or two.
Since that day (to connect it back to the podcast) my own life, my family's, my friends, and just the feeling I get in watching TH-cam videos or whatever... I get the feeling we are in the midst of a 3rd Great Awakening (look up the first two, we actually still teach about these in public schools, which I can attest to as a History teacher)
TLDR- God is pretty cool, would highly recommend. 5 stars lol ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

When we start to see the secularist in the political whelm (or elsewhere for that matter), so steeped in their approach to life and their faith in their policies working, failing to produce anything worthwhile and lasting in relieving the social ills they claim they have the answers to, coming to people of faith on even terms asking for our help, then I perceive a window of opportunity and a hesitant reawakening by them to realities they have, for a very long time, disavowed and repudiated as mere myth and superstition and ignorance. In other words, the secularists (atheistic or otherwise) are becoming more open to the possibilities of another worldview and a better way of looking at the world for the common good.

I think it’s a lot more common to see people who “grew up Christian” leave the faith simply because they were likely only Christian by proxy to begin with. They likely never got answers to the hard questions and maybe never even understood the gospel and its full implications. I honestly think that atheists who become Christian are more likely to stick with it for the long haul. I am a former atheist who became a Christian because I found the evidence compelling and now I can never go back because I have had real experiences with God in my life that have fundamentally changed me. Almost all of the stories I have heard about people leaving the faith have to do with spiritual abuse they experienced in the church over the years and essentially boils down to Christians are wicked and sinful just like everyone else and a lot of people have been lied to and convinced that being a Christian means you stop sinning altogether. Obviously it’s a lot more complicated than that but just based on what I’ve seen it seems like the church does seem to fail young people in a lot of ways and could probably do a lot better at discipleship.

There were half a dozen or so equally low quality arguments in chapter 1, so I stopped reading it.

As an atheist, I don’t see what’s so surprising about all this. I actually became an atheist during a period of listening to Justin’s show back in 2010 or even earlier. As a new atheist, I tried a couple secular, atheist and humanist groups. It was fun with the newness of seeing the world in a new way, but I quickly lost interest. My preexisting friend group works for me. Most of them are Christians (though some of my Christian friends abandoned me upon my losing faith), but I have a few Buddhists and a couple apatheistic “nones” as well. No church, no clubs or anything else needed for me. I still get newsletters from a local humanist and secular group and they seem to be going strong.
The church has been fragmenting since Peter and Paul. So many denominations. Why would Sean and Justin expect anything else from atheists? It’s what humans do. Thing is, while it seems the “new atheists” have stopped being so much of a bother to Christians, believers- especially apologists- continue to be jerks (for lack of a better term atm) toward atheists. They insist we actually believe and suppress our knowledge of god in order to persevere in sin and such (Rom 1:18ff). They insist that they have special knowledge and it’s absolute, they strive to convert children and disadvantaged others, significantly overstate their case (as Justin does here), are generally rude (when they know you’re not a prospective convert) and so on.
PS. Peter Boghossian is no person I’d take pride in having on my side as he’s such an intellectual pansy.

just as some christians might speak harsh - so do many atheists. That impression is mere bias.
Also, people DO come to God and one big thing is walking away from sin - which resides in the natural wants and perversions of the flesh. Once you have this experience you DO realize how much your prior rejection of God was not wanting to lose your fleshly wants. They say this from having walked through it, not as an insult to the atheist.
You might call it projection…. or perhaps there is more truth to it there than you want to acknowledge. Even if delivered with less tact than would be nice.

So I ended up among Atheists, they were great when they found out I'd left the church, but when they discovered I still believed in God they accused me of being irrational and unable the think critically, of being what is wrong with the world (immoral) and only worthy of eradication, (get rid of the religious and then the world will be a better place). But belief in God is still falling. Atheism is experiencing what Christianity has over the centuries - that of splitting into a myriad of different groups. Because atheism is only the response to a single issue, it is inevitable that those actively involved in the debate need other issues to differentiate themselves from others. I suspect this is also because the fundamental argument of whether the Christian God exists, is all powerful, all good, etc has been largely settled in the negative - and so other things are needed to argue about.

Yea but it would be a book, not a TH-cam post 😂 Basically, religion no longer helps some people make sense of their world. In fact, religion makes daily life more confusing because the reality we experience does not often align with the principles of the Bible. Developing a non religious worldview takes time because there is not a weekly meeting where people tell you what to think and how to live, but doing the hard work of making sense of the world without religion can be well worth the effort and peace of mind. Religion can create unnecessary divisions that a secular perspective is free to question and discard. Of course humans are humans, whether they are religious or not, but atheists have the opportunity to reconsider long held practices. That’s the best I can do by typing on my phone 👍

Brierly has been such a great moderator over the years that I'm shocked he's so staggeringly dishonest in this vid.
    1. Atheism is just non-belief in gods. That's it. It's the rational position because don't know gods exist. (Until the evidence changes, non-belief is the only reasonable position for truth-seeking people.)
    2. Because atheism by definition involves no gods, it can't be described as "religious".
    3. Because atheism by definition is just non-belief (or disbelief) in gods, you can't accuse it of always adhering to scientific materialism.
    4. A book someone likes isn't their "holy text".
    4. Teachers of a sensible position aren't religious leaders, they're just people trying to help you detach from a horrible belief.
    5. Atheism isn't a 'cause about something'. It's non-belief in gods. _That's it!_
Does 5 make sense to theists? It's like Gary calling into question what _your_ non-belief in leprechauns (your "cause") is really about -- it's not about anything, except truth! We don't know leprechauns exist, Gary. We don't have evidence of them. So we just don't believe in that garbage idea. Well it's the same with gods.

*1. Atheism is just non-belief in gods. That's it. It's the rational position because don't know gods exist. (Until the evidence changes, non-belief is the only reasonable position for truth-seeking people.)*
No. Just no. 1st of all, you are guilty of the false equivalence fallacy. Brierly doesn't care about a person's non-belief in deities when he uses the term 'atheist'. He is explicitly using the term in the context of Enlightenment Naturalism. It's not the Brierly is being dishonest, it's that you aren't thinking.
Secondly, atheism isn't 'the rational position'. It's just one of many. Just because you don't have the education to know how the term 'atheist' is used in many different contexts doesn't mean that you get a monopoly on what is and is not 'rational'.
*2. Because atheism by definition involves no gods, it can't be described as "religious".*
Bullshit. This, more than the other points on the list encapsulates you utter lack of education. It's like you don't understand that Far Eastern Religions exist. And that's extremely telling.
Moreover, in many key ways, you are probably religious in some ways, such as a belief ion the unfounded delusion known as human rights, or secular governments, etc.
*3. Because atheism by definition is just non-belief (or disbelief) in gods, you can't accuse it of always adhering to scientific materialism.*
Except I can. In the Enlightenment tradition, atheism is a Naturalistic philosophy. It literally can't be anything else except adhering to scientific materialism.
*4. Teachers of a sensible position aren't religious leaders, they're just people trying to help you detach from a horrible belief.*
      TRANSLATION:
The beliefs of non-white Westerners scare me. Non-White people NEED to agree with me and my incel virgin thoughts.
      *5. Atheism isn't a 'cause about something'. It's non-belief in gods. That's it!*
I'm genuine shock that you're this stupid. If you believe in God, that means something. If you don't believe in God that also means something. Non-belief causes things to happen within the universe, just as belief does. This is something that can be ascertained by a 1st grader. What's your excuse?

@@thepalegalilean1. Confirming Brierly's dishonesty by repeating it doesn't address my point. The majority of people self-identifying as atheist are non-believers, which is why when you google "atheism" you get things like "disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods," and the first-sentence summary on Wikipedia, _"Atheism, in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of deities."_ The majority of atheist guests he's had on his show hold this position.
2 The definition of religion is, _"the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a God or gods."_ Hurling insults towards this fact _doesn't change the fact._ So any ideology that doesn't involve a god (or superhuman power(s)) isn't religion. Well atheism is non-belief in any gods, so by definition it _must not_ be religion, and therefore calling it religious is dishonest.
(Note in particular how I'm the one supporting my claims with evidence -- facts of reality -- while your objections are just you vaguely disagreeing for no good reason. That tells us who's on the side of truth here.)
      3. You can _wrongly_ accuse it of that, but again _we just saw the definition of atheism_ (in '1' above) and it doesn't involve any other parts of a worldview, so I'm not sure why you would make such a clear mistake.
      4. If you know you have to slide that far off topic that you aren't even addressing my point, then you know you're wrong. Well if you know you're wrong...why are you disagreeing?
      5. What does your non-belief in leprechauns mean? Oh, it doesn't have a meaning? Now you're caught up and hopefully realize that non-belief in gods carries no intrinsic meaning. Any meaning is from other sources. Countless atheists have made this point, but apparently you haven't been listening (or perhaps you've only listened to theists tell you lies on the topic).
_Most importantly, see how you haven't presented strong, logical evidence of a god?_ Well that's the centerpiece of the conversation: the reason to remain unconvinced that god(s) exist is the lack of any convincing argument that they exist!

In answer to your question, Sean, about how to best reach out to people to move them away from atheism and scepticism to a relationship with Christ, the answer is very simple and close to what you concluded: It's not to have all the apologetic answers or to bring them to church, but mainly to be filled with the Holy Spirit, specifically the Spirit of love for one another and for them (John 13:34-35).

I’m a bit further on, so another comment- Regarding Ravi Zacharias scandal, it was the atheist community (especially Banjo Playing Atheist here on YT) and theologian Randal Rauser (who also represented an anonymous Christian) who brought it to light months before it broke. The evangelical community was rather harsh and strictly denied any possibility of such a thing, standing up for Zacharias. It was truly sad to see.
Cancel culture lacks something Christianity has- grace. It depends on where you look. Christianity is the original cancel culture from cancelling the gods others believed in in antiquity to cancelling games, toys, movies, books, whole belief systems, music, food, other people, holidays, science, and so much, either calling the thing immoral or claiming Satan is at the root. It’s really quite silly and continues.
“Atheists are less interested in arguing about evolution.” Actually, the idiocy of evolution denial has been pretty well pushed to the margins of Christianity. Most of the mainstream that still does not accept evolution simply don’t talk about it, leaving the true wackos to push YEC. Why should atheists (or better, scientists) waste their time arguing with the fringe who are effectively silent (or muted) on the matter these days?

If you think "Atheism" is a religion, you probably think not collecting stamps is a hobby.
The only thing we realized around 2011 is that there didn't need to be a "movement". The masses were leaving religion organically, and they still are. Dawkins, Hitchens and others got caught up in hating on Islam after 9/11, with good reason in my opinion, which far left liberals didn't like... that's what did them in. Political correctness ruined their careers, not a resurgence in the belief in god.

A lot of "Christians" believe in God, but they live like atheists. God says one thing, and adherents of traditional Christianity do the opposite. One of the greatest examples of this is Christmas, Easter, and Sunday services. God plainly said "don't practice the way of the heathen", and "Christianity" still reason that these inherently idolatrous festivals are Christian because _they_ say so.
