For the black caterpillar problem, if they are chewing on the stem at the base of the plant, sprinkle diatomaceous earth on the ground around the plant. If they are chewing on the foliage, spray with Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT). Good luck

That's a good idea. I haven't been using DE yet, but I did spray BT a couple of times. It seems to have helped. It's been too wet for DE.
