Earth Is Temporarily Getting a Second ‘Moon’

- Starting next week, the moon, Earth’s closest celestial body, will be joined by a new neighbor: a second moon.
From Sept. 29 until Nov. 25, astronomers calculate that 2024 PT5- which is what scientists think is an asteroid but have dubbed a “mini-moon”-will be looping around Earth. It will eventually break free of the planet’s gravitational orbit.

None, it will pass/orbit further out than the Moon.
We got our moon 12,900 years ago . That was when the Younger Dryas happened and before that there is no recorded history on ever having a moon and that the poles and magnetic fields changed also !

I don't think that will be visible to anyone other than those with big telescopes. He did say its about 30ft... So it's roughly the size of a living room and kitchen combined. And right outside the atmosphere? No way to see something that small.... But I would love to be proven wrong so I can see it too!

@@jessed197 you could see Saturns moons from Saturn, moons have to have sufficient mass and be held by the gravity of the planet they orbit 30 meters is nowhere near big enough try maybe 300 KM and even then pretty sure scientists would say it’s too small but more of a discussion

A rock can be a moon at the same time as long as it is orbiting a planet.
It's orbiting the sun though, not the Earth. It's an asteroid, that's the end of the story

Neil Armstrong's probably like "Not again. That's another small step for man. Another giant leap for mankind.".
My question is that if Earth is able to capture the asteroid and keep it in orbit for 56.6 days, will it be gaining speed orbiting and thus reach escape velocity of Earth's gravity? I'm not an astrophysicist, but I know something about gravity and objects pulled into orbit should probably stay in orbit.
