    So glad Melanie's channel is still up. My cousin is going through treatment for cancer and I made this hat for her. Now making another one! Melanie's legacy and teaching lives on! Thank you for leaving her channel for us all.

    I don't want this to come off rude but I like that you don't edit out your mistakes. It's comforting to know that not all of these youtubers are perfect and they still mess up just like i do

    I remember watching this 4 years ago when I was around 8, this was my first crochet tutorial video. The beanie I created was fitted since it was still my first time, my little brother now uses it. It was the first project I started and finished! I made 2 others for my parents and they still have it 'til now. Today, I found this video again and thought about sharing this!

    Took me 3 days and I went through about 4 different magic circles until I finally got it down. From there, I had to start 2 more beanies before I finally counted everything and knotted everything correctly. AND I FINALLY DID IT!
    If you're having trouble, keep trying! I promise, once your fingers get used to the motions, and you get used to the patterns in the yarn, it'll be so easy you'll laugh at your past frustration!
    Also, some advice would be to loosen up a little. Don't hold the yarn too tight or you'll never be able to pull the new yarn through. Happy crocheting! ❤

    I’ve been crocheting for 10+ years with only a handful of lessons. What I’ve learned, I’ve learned on my own after I was given those early personal lessons(from geriatric nursing if you care to know. Yay! Old people! I love you!) and have never watched but one or two crocheting how-to videos. The reason is because the videos were never “stupid simple”. And because I am ambidextrous, but left hand dominant, I would always do BACKWARDS, what was shown and it never came out right. I would get disheartened and stop crocheting for awhile because I couldn’t get out of my very basic, 1-3 stitches.
    I could cry watching you. I understood EVERYTHING and how it was presented. Thank you. I’m confidant to try this pattern when I get home. Thanks!

    I just received crochet hooks and some yarn at Christmas, as it was something I have always wanted to learn (my grandmother was amazing at it, but I never got the chance to learn from her). I just want to thank you so much for all your beginner videos! Your speed and explanations have been great to work with, and even though I am not 100% adept at reading written instructions, having the visual and then to compare to the written truly helps! I just followed this beanie today, however I used a 6 weight yarn and a 10mm as that was the pairing I had on hand that worked, so I did need to adjust the rows for fit. It took me around an hour, but it went wonderfully!! Again thank you!

      To change colors on any project, cut a long tail on the yarn you are currently using, then make sure to simply start using the second color of yarn in your next stich, I know this is a little confusing but I'm sure you could find a video that teaches you how to switch colors, it's easier than it sounds 😊

    • @hollydoor9435
      @hollydoor9435 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yea, it's possible, leave the needle looped in the yarn and tighten it so there's no slack, if you want to switch from one color to another from one entire double stitch to the next cut the yarn off about 2 inches from the needle (the yarn connected to the roll of yarn). Tie the other color to the loose end and clip off the tags. You should have about enough yarn of the original color to make another double stich before you transition into the next color. You may need to experiment with the length of cut offs to get the desired effect.

    Hi Melanie: I am a beginner and I have looked into several beanie videos and I finally could get answers to questions that even slowing down other videos I could not see . # 1 problem that I had was where exactly to put the hook after completing the magic ring and #2 was again, where exactly to put the hook after each row. Your camera is in the perfect position to see.
    Crocheting is a fast movement and you took the time to show slowly how and where the hook goes...and THAT makes a big difference. Before I found your video I had to take apart a beanie for the second time as it did not look good. I guessed where to put the hook....and my guess was wrong :-) There is no need to guess with your video...Christal Clear..Thank you!

    I've crocheted for many years, but only know a few stitches. I've also only made blankets and scarves. I wanted to "branch" out and make something different, but I consider myself a beginner in that regard. This video has been extremely helpful. I like her style of teaching, not too fast and not too slow. I'm able to follow her easily. My first attempt at a Beanie is not going to be perfect - I know that already. But I'll keep watching the video and I know I'll get better. She's very easy to watch and listen to.

    Your tutorial and free pattern was a SUCCESS! I tried 4 other patterns from 4 different sources and they were a huge failure because i wasn't able to understand it, despite picture examples. Even 2 TH-cam channels was nothing near how amazing yours was for a REAL beginner tutorial was. I am hooked to your channel now and am so grateful for your generosity, i can't wait to see what I'll purchase from your site as my next project. THANK YOU MELANIE!

I thought that I would be a blanket maker for the rest of my life..hahah..Thank you so much!!!

    Very nice tutorial, 2 things though.
    1: The hat will be pointy (my first one kinda funny beacuse of this).
    2: The size of the hat will be tiiiiny. If you like me got a big head you will need to expand the size MUCH faster, I'm not sure how much yet (have still to get yarn for my second hat) but I will probably try and double the rate of expansion.
    Other than that, its a great tutorial, thanks!

    • @LarissaDawn
      @LarissaDawn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hat shouldn't be pointy.
      When I make hats that turn out like a dunce hat it's because I tried to wing the pattern or I made an extra row and waited too long to start increasing.

      Maybe your adding a double crochet in the same place where you have the 2 chains at the beginning ... After you chain 2 do the 2 double crochet in the next stitch not where the 2 chains are then after you do a 2 double crochet stitch in the same chain for the next six stitches do a 1 double crochet till the sixth stitch then add the 2 double crochet in the next chain continue till the last and check once again where u made a mistake before finishing the row😊

    Good tutorial thanks, just a bit of feedback. It would really help if you made it clearer with the post-it that you do three more rows, the first 2 then 4, 2 then 5, 2 then 6. I got lost there as I thought I was doing one row! Maybe just me.. also after the transition where you replace slip stitch with the double, perhaps show how you work that into the next row as I couldn’t figure that out on my own. Thanks!

    • @KaylayaKasintaya
      @KaylayaKasintaya 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very common to do. I either change to a larger hook or I make sure to make my slip stitch loops larger. Usually if it's tight, it will loosen up a bit over time as you wear. I do like it to be a bit tight so I know it will stay on my head and not just slip off.

    • @hollydoor9435
      @hollydoor9435 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      One doesn't normally notice when they start tightening up there stitches. It took me a ridiculous amount of attempts to not tighten the stitches. It's a lot harder to keep stiches loose then one would think. It's so much easier to tighten them unkowingly which is the problem for most people. I still can't do a hole piece without tightening up the stitches by accident.

    • @cialpeachh4781

      Mark Mullins II I think you get more yarn than you think usually they sell yarn in a big ball or big clumps so I think you should use that much and the hook I would recommend between 3.5-5.00mm hooks hope that helps though I'm a month late

    • @ramidelc
      @ramidelc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would think that you're not keeping the count. Although in most things I feel you can color out of the lines and get away with it, when crocheting you need to stick to the instructions because any deviation will result in a substantial change from the model. Be sure to count your double crochets right. I was doing another one and it had a very narrow tip, I could correct it when I found Melanie's videos, though it still came out weird, the second hat I'm doing I had to undo after having knitted the first half because it was getting flat, then I realized I was knitting more double crochets than instructed, and that´s also what happens when it comes out all ruffled, you are putting more than recommended.

    • @allisonmoore5476
      @allisonmoore5476 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Were you using a chunky yarn? Mine looks a lot like a bowl and I’m using chunky yarn. I kinda thought about pulling out the row where you double crochet 2 and then double crochet 6 just because it’s so big.
