Looks like the grey cover version is on Amazon now in the U.S. for even cheaper than the £60 it goes for in the UK. Good news if you're thinking about grabbing that one!
Although I kinda like the ultra premium version, the cheaper one was made more precious to me. I got it during a bad weather in the UK with my parents and it felt like we were trudging through Caradrhas to Waterstones. We wore multiple layers of clothing to keep the cold out and protect us from the rain but we were sweating buckets beneath it all. Plus it was heavy wearing all those clothing and it was hard for us to walk 10-15 mins because we rarely exercised. Then when I reached Waterstones, I desperately looked for it cause my mom wasnt in good shape and my dad was grumpier than usual. We looked through every section in the store but alas I did not find it in the Science Fiction section and my heart sank, defeated I went to find my mom who suddenly disappeared. We roamed around looking for her when she called to us on the stair of the shop which I assumed to be restricted. I felt confused at first why she was their and motioned to us to come upstairs. Each step felt closer to heaven when I saw an entirely different and jaw-dropping part of Waterstones. An entire floor dedicated to media I enjoyed and consumed, comics, manga and most importantly a section for Fantasy special editions. Then I saw another magical thing to my eyes set upon, a coffee shop was on the same floor. In my peripheral I saw glitters and my mind was still gathering itself after it blew. Then remembering why I was there I looked for the Cheap version of the Special Edition and I was mesmerized by the collection of comics and manga my eyes were hooked upon. I almost missed it if not for my mom who pointed it out. It was hidden under a tiny display table sitting in front of a mid high shelf. My mind blew again just after it picked itself up. So we got it took the last train to our small town walked another 10-15 mins walk to our house. To say the least it was a fun day.

I was given the red premium version as a Christmas present some years ago. I've never taken it out of it's slipcase and it has it's own special place on my bookshelf. When I retire in about 10-12 years, I'm going to sit down with some good brandy and read it cover to cover. In the meantime, I've got multiple paperback versions of The Hobbit and LotR to tide me over.
Now, the problem: Until I watched your video, I had no idea about all the "extras" included in this version. I now find myself battling my own willpower to leave the book untouched for another decade----yeah, I'm a real sucker for fold out maps......

I bought the premium ultra addition because when I was a kid, my grandmother read to me the Lord of the Rings (I'm talking 9-10 years old). Because she read them to me long before the movies were ever even thought up of its one of the only things I can say I was a fan of before pop culture got to it (Not that the movies are bad I loved them [she didn't]). Because of this I managed to get myself onto a pre order list for the premium copy and now I plan on sharing the story with my own son.
Your grandmother read the entire trilogy to you?! Now that was a commitment lol.
@@Remmy0930 Twice, The Hobbit a few times as well, and the Narnia stories twice (once in publishing order and once in chronological order). It helped that she lived next door so I'd just walk over or vice versa. She loved those books and would talk about them all the time hahah

I have a copy of the de luxe version and it's absolutely gorgeous. I'm a bit of a Lord of the Rings nut because I already have about eleven different hardback editions of the book, including the fiftieth anniversary edition and a set of the second edition from 1969/1970.
The red and ring inscription got me on the cheaper model. I saw that one first then I saw the more expensive one and wanted it until I was the pages were just gilded and didnt have the inscription. The cheaper one just looks os unique with that added feature, not to mention I like the first edition look to it. I pre ordered off amazon but they are out of stock so i didnt get mine from them (2nd time that has happened to me!) but luckily target had it in stock for the same $45 that Amazon did.

I bought the lower tier. Didn't know about the other. The ring script on the page edges is what really drew me to it. I have several editions of LoTR as it's my favorite work of fiction.
I got mine today: so happy with it. I wanted the "cheaper" version because it look amazing and not so heavy. I am happy with it.

The golden tengwar on the cover and the ring verse on the side both look amazing. The black hardcover with the eye of Sauron on the front and the red LORD OF THE RINGS title on the binding also gives the book a really cool menacing look. Needless to say, I LOVE mine!

They're doing sillmarillion in the same way too, author illustrated with a matching deluxe version. I ended up buying this when I pre-ordered the sillmarillion as well as tales of numenor (again, same style but illustrated by Alan lee instead of Tolkien himself). I really dislike dust jackets on books in general, I find them awkward to read with, think they look great with the art work etc. So I ended up with the deluxe versing, it is surprising how much of it you still get with the cheaper hardback btw like it's not too crazy of a difference
I got the 50th anniversary edition. Around the same price as the new ones, but one of the things is that the pages for some reason touch all the way to the bottom of the book, rather than having a little bit of room like other books. I suppose this doesn’t matter as it’s always in the slipcase, but it does make it awkward to hold.
Just got the premium version - found it inBath, England and shipped it here to Tennessee. I love it!
Picked up the quarter leather today from Amazon for £70. Can’t grumble at that price. I just hope the print isn’t as bad as some folks have received.
Or do what I did... get the cheaper one, then commission a leather cover for it by an expert cowboy leathersmith and bask in the glory 👌
I have the Harper Collins leather pocket edition of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit has illustration by J.R.R. Tolkien. And colored maps too.
Got the cheaper one for my wife’s birthday. She loves it to bits. It’s a gorgeous version. Lovely to read.

why pay so much more for a quarter of the cover being leather and the rest is the same as the other ? i would pay more for FULL leather hardcover but not just a spine

I got the 50th Anniversary Deluxe edition since it came out on my birthday. I attempted LotR a few years ago but I got frustrated with it and quit at the battle of Helm's Deep. My taste has greatly evolved so I thought I'll probably like it better now and shelled out some extra money for this edition. I had a one volume paperback and given its smaller dimensions I probably got strained from having to read a smaller font

Best version is probably the non illustrated one. The Lord of the Rings:50th Anniversary hardcover Edition,probably has the best design on it.My opinion on this the red leather spine looks better.

my most precious edition is the green 1995 paperback edition from 1995. Was the cheapest available, the print smudges when you rub overit. My exs rat from back in early 2000‘s gnawed it, it’s covered in notes from 30 years of reading and the pages are yellow brown, some fixed with tape. Wouldn’t give it away for anything.
If you're getting the "cheap* one, i also recommend getting the illustrated Hobbit and Silmarillion. All three go well together.

I don't understand why not every single hardcover book is bound like this. Also I don't understand why it's so rare to have REAL leather books. Most leather bounds are bonded leather. Can't order Easton press in Netherlands. And leather usually asks a premium.
But it makes no sense. Bonded leather is maybe even worse for durability than cardboard. But looks great.
Actual leather is CHEAP AF. Idk why everyone pretends like leather is expensive when cow, sheep etc leather is a fkn by product of the meat industry. You can buy real leather and real leather products for super cheap in most of the world. But in the west "leather is a luxury" and it's priced absurdly high and eco psychos want to ban it when it's 1000000000000000x better for the planet than faux leathers made from oils and shit
EDIT: I'm pretty sur ethe future is ereaders. Like even when i have a physical copy and despite enjoying the feeling of a nice book in my hands. I prefer my ereader or have my ereader next to me to constantly take notes and highlight stuff.
So the books I buy are literally more display items. And I don't ever buy paper backs. Because I rather spend a little more on a nice hardcover. I buy special editions and leather bounds for books i love. I read almost everything on my ereader

thanks for the review. im looking for a nice illustrated (colourful / cheerful not dull illustration preferably) hard cover edition. but most of the so called illustrated editions have just sporadic illustrations and i would expect 1 or two per chapter. any suggestions? thanks

I heard the same thing. ‘Supposedly’ limited to 5,000 copies.
However, the deluxe version is easy to buy at most places. I think it’s all a rumour.
Also, checking the HarperCollins UK publisher site, no edition size is listed.
So I’d like to know how many were / are actually being published (of the deluxe). 🤔

Small correction: these editions are not limited at all and it was known from the start that the nombers announced by Harper Collins were for advertising purposes / sales communication 😉

These books seem like collectors items and seem very thick and heavy to read. Do people actually read these? Or is it better to just keep it as a collectors item and buy the cheaper paperback versions for reading? I’m considering buying one of these nicer premium ones but need more info. Thanks
The cheaper version of these has actually become my preferred reading edition. But hey, everyone's tastes are different!

Would you suggest this(expensive one) or the 40th(2004) anniversary edition or the 50th(2014) anniversary one?? Trying to decide which one to buy.
Friends on your priorities. The bre one is better for shelf appeal and for the novelty of Tolkien's own illustrations. It will also likely archive better than the others. If the quality of the illustrations matters, though, then Alan Lee's are better. (Sorry Professor.)
