In 1995 I had a dream so vivid I wrote it down. I saw a weather girl on TV standing in front of a national weather map telling the forecast. While she stood to the left of the Great Lakes, I saw several states illuminated in orange .. Illinois .. Indiana .. Ohio .. Tennessee .. Kentucky into Alabama. There was a number blinking on top of Indiana 8.8 and red lines traversing south. I was unaware of San Madrid fault in 1995. I didn’t know if any fault lines were ever in Indiana at the time. The dream was short and closed with the weather lady looking at right at me while the 8.8 was blinking bold ... then the map shoot, the red lines spread south, then I abruptly woke. Days before that I had a short dream of a 7.1 earthquake in Japan. Kobe earthquake hit less than a week later, so I assumed Indiana would follow soon. I told everyone I knew ... 21 years later and nothing has happen. Doesn’t mean I don’t think it will happen. I just hope it doesn’t.

I wish they would turn this real historical natural disaster into a movie like they did for Krakatoa, it would give us such a better understanding as to what these poor settlers went through. Also it would be challenging with all the catastrophic effects that went on for months, what do you think? Would you watch it?
I don't want a fictionalized movie myself, but a Netflix documentary would be incredible. There are so many stories and scientific phenomenon to still be discovered here.
I would watch it. If it was done well. I live close to the area and the thought of when will it happen again has been on my mind from when I first heard about it. Why we don't build by earthquake standards amazes me. And it is actually hard to find interesting material on the topic.
If the series that occurred in 1811-1812 happened today, the loss of life and devastation would be unimaginable. A lot of people think that the big earthquake was just one major one, but it was several powerful quakes that occurred in the span of 3 months. This includes a 7.8, 7.6, 7.5, and 7.0 with several major aftershocks of two 6.3s and a 6.1. All of this in 3 months time... That is unprecedented even in areas like California. Data shows this is modus operandi for the seismic zone too. When it ruptures it ruptures in waves. Could you imagine seeing 4 "once in a life time" earthquakes in the span of 3 months? This is because this seismic zone is unlike typical zones along tectonic plate boundaries. New Madrid Seimic Zone (NMSZ)isn't really a fault like you would see in California, it is more like a weakness (a failed rift) in the North American plate from two series in past history where the plate almost ruptured into 2 pieces. This leaves parts of the Earth's crust in the area deeply cracked and thinner versus other areas. This alone would cause some seismic activity as there are similar weaknesses through out the US east of the Rocky Mountains and they do get some Earthquake activity, but it would not account for the massive, repeated quakes and how they seem to occur repeatedly throughout periods of 2 to 4 centuries. The special thing about NMSZ is what is happening below the Earth's crust down in the mantle. Just below the plate weakness noted above, there is very dense rock sinking deep into the Earth's mantle towards the core. This is the ancient Farallon plate which subsided under the North American plate from the west coast of America. This plate is responsible for the Rocky Mountains and much of the reason the Western US is so high in elevation. It's like a sandwich of two tectonic plates stacked on each other. The reason the Great Planes slopes upwards as you move west is because the remnants of the Farallon plate are slowly sinking into the mantle like a ramp. As the Farallon plate's remnants it gets deeper and hotter pieces begin to break off and sink more dramatically into the mantle at steeper angles. It just so happens this seemingly occurs right under the NMSZ area. This causes a downwards pull on the bottom of the North American plate and combined with the major weakness in the plate in this area is why we get earthquakes. Huge chunks of the cracked plate get put under tremendous stress and eventually let go and spring upwards. Since there are lots of these chucks of plate, one chuck releasing can start a domino effect and cause other chunks to release thus the series of major earthquakes that do not occur in this frequency along traditional fault lines. Aggravating this, there are also huge masses of igneous intrusions under the surface from magma up-welling in between the cracks of the North America when it was almost torn in half that have sense cooled into solid towers of very dense rock that lurk deep under ground (called a pluton in geology). These masses are present all around the NMSZ and constantly want to sink downwards due to there density compared to surrounding sedimentary rock. This puts additional stresses on the area from inside the North American Plate. Another major series will happen again, likely after 2100, but could happen sooner. More over smaller quakes still occur and even a single 6.0 event would cause major problems for the area. If you live int he midsouth be prepared and get Earthquake coverage on your house.

I live in Harrison TN above the eastern seismic zone. I was awake at 4:14 AM on dec 12, 2018 when a 4.4 magnitude hit. The first quake I have felt that was significantly strong. Most damage was minor and around the epicenter in Decatur TN with a few cracked windows and objects knocked off walls.
One place people are much less prepared is in their cars and trucks ; i remember the ' 94 Northridge, CA. quake vividly. Had the quake happened at 4:30 pm rather 4:30 am and not on a holiday (MLKday), the situation would have been much worse. Many thousands would have been stranded for who knows how long. The traffic was very light and this gave Cal Trans time to inspect bridges ect. , utility companies to shut off power ,and police and fire to get to their emergency quickly.
According to many eyewitness accounts, it wasn't just sand and water forced out in the sand blows, there were also chunks of coal, some as heavy as 20 pounds. The blows shot stuff as high as 100 feet. I can't even imagine what it was like seeing this.
Many years of reading/research have given me a tiny bit of insight on this fascinating subject. Often when large quakes happen they reveal more fault lines that were formerly unknown and very deep in the earth. This has happened in California and other places, and is probable in NMSZ as well. Unfortunately for the predictions of the scientists, it will be these hidden faults that come to light (and life) when the NMSZ lets go in the future that will exponentially increase the devastation. Forewarned is forearmed, folks should prepare for natural disasters wherever they live and have the ability to survive at least 3 weeks without outside aid..counting on the government to help would be a mistake. Naturally IMHO.

We may be in for it again, as the New Madrid zone is hit by earthquakes and hot spots recently. The early 1800's was a time of a solar minimum that affected the entire planet with droughts, crop failures, and starvation (think Irish potato blight). We are going through a solar minimum right now to rival the one in the 1800's..do you think the New Madrid will get hit..soon?
Sorry Dee....you don't get "hit" by a hot spot. Hot spots refer to certain volcanic areas. Maybe you're thinking of a 'swarm' of temblors?? (that *is* spelled correctly, you can call them 'tremors' or 'temblors', but they're NOT 'tremblors', lol) Also, pretty sure scientists would have thought of your 'solar minimum' theory....ACTUALLY, gonna give you a little science lesson here.... Solar minimum is the period of least solar activity in the 11-year solar cycle of the Sun. Period. You have a huge misunderstanding of what 'solar minimum' means. We experience solar minimums many times in a century so your theory is pretty much blown, as is your question about imminent earthquakes in the New Madrid zone. ALSO....your solar minimum theory falls apart because if that were true, wouldn't there have been earthquakes worldwide if there was a solar minimum? How, in your theory, does the solar minimum single out the New Madrid area as the only area to cause a quake? See? You didn't do your homework at all. Your understanding of the science of earthquakes and solar activity is elementary at best. AND, lastly, solar minimums DON'T cause droughts, crop failures, or starvation. Get a grip. Read a book. Educate, don't obfuscate.
Which would be a fault line of sorts. There is a chain of old extinct volcanoes all down the MS. With some of it more active through Arkansas. Even Jackson, Mississippi has an extinct volcano under it.
The world was hijacked in 1811-1812... the comet impacts that triggered the earthquakes/floods/fires, made it pretty easy to decimate the remaining survivors
Between 1985 and 1988 I had an older relative if he was attending the university in kirksville missouri. It shook so badly him and his roommate and some other people are trying to catch his grandmother's China that they had on display up on the shelf. It literally knocked things off 📴 the shelf.
I fail to understand how the measurement determination of 7.7 on the Richter scale came about [6:35] regarding these quakes since the invention of the Richter scale had not occurred yet. It did not come along until 1935! Should have stated it to be an 'estimation'.
You are correct. I used to live in the area and took an earthquakes class at Southeast Missouri State. The instructor repeatedly emphasized that it was an estimate. They should have done this here.
Is there a copy of this video available online that includes CC? I would love to use this movie as part of my introductory geology course, but I am not allowed to show any media in my classroom that doesn't include CC.
Hi Janelle, thanks for your interest. Unfortunately there isn't a captioned version of the documentary available online or on DVD. The only CC version was the one delivered to the TV stations. But I may look into the viability of getting a captioned copy on DVD. Kip Cole

I think now that the powers that be know the fault exists and where it is, I would hope they are not allowing new homes to be built, or new businesses to build buildings in the towns on the fault. But I suspect that isn’t happening. Because it is not if a bad earthquake happens, it is when it happens.
The US Army Corps of Engineers aren't that worried about the bridges crossing the Mississippi River at Menphis, Helena and Vicksburg or further north where the Ohio joins the Mississippi. The southern bridges are outside the higher risk regions and the northern bridge is well set into bedrock. The ACoE did take the precautions to have all oil and gas pipelines cross the river well to the south of Vicksburg and north in Central Illinois.
I grew up in California. Had earthquake insurance. Moved to South Carolina where in 1886 there was a 7.0 size earthquake. I have earthquake insurance here. It’s cheap.
It would appear that these powerful quakes in this fault zone are equally powerful to and more destructive than California earthquakes, but on average powerful series of quakes happen once every 400 to 550 years. While active in the interim, the quakes in between the big series of quakes are comparatively weak. But every 400 to 550 years expect several big ones over a 6 month period. Given the frequency of large quake groupings being at at least 400 yr intervals, the next 140 years should be rather quiet. I would start really worrying 140 yrs from now.
That's a failed pre-Cambrian rift zone. An older one is the Mid-Continent Rift Zone that looped like an inverted U from North Central Oklahoma up to Lake Superior then down thru Michigan into Alabama. These occurred before the Applilachian - Ouachita Mountain Chain was uplifted when Pangea was created when Rodina collided with Africa and South America. The Ouachita Mountains ran across Arkansas and Mississippi to join the Southern Appalachian Mountains in Alabama. Then that section of mountains rode over the Bermuda Hot Spot which caused them to rise in elevation where they started eroding faster. Then their remains dropped in elevation as the plate moved away from the hot spot creating the deep Mississippi Ebayment that held the rift zone at the northern end. It was filled with water when the Pacific Ocean found a way into the depression that became the Gulf of Mexico. The ebayment began filling up with sediment from the ancient Ohio and Missouri -Mississippi Rivers. They ran down separate channels on either side of Crowley's Ridge. The geologists believe the shifting failed rift forced the Missouri -Mississippi into the Ohio River's channel with more earthquakes forcing the Ohio into its present channel since it once ran across Southern Illinois to join the Mo-Miss.
I think there's a bigger issue today if this was to occur on the Nevada test site the last blast was called faultless unfortunately they have been trying to fix the fault ever since Yellowstone Yellowstone is the big problem
The bad news... In a 7.5 or greater earthquake, Memphis will be a complete and total loss. The good news... In a 7.5 or greater earthquake, Memphis will be a complete and total loss!
I get tired on people bashing Memphis. Memphis has its problems just like any dense urban area. But it is not nearly as much of a battleground as the media likes to portray it. I lived there for 45 years and had no real problems.

Also rattled church bells in Boston..
Although I'd originally heard that, too, I found out differently... here's an excerpt from the page where I posted my song (which you hear the first and last verses of during the video's rolling credits)..."Thanks also to Chris McGoldrick, Gary Patterson, Charles Langston, and Kent Moran, at the Center for Earthquake Research and Information at the University of Memphis, for reviewing the lyrics for historical accuracy. (*) Early reports say bells rang in Boston, but the Center's historian (Kent Moran) says that Charleston, SC is more correct. I also originally wrote "chimneys fell in Maine", another historical misnomer, which I changed to "chimneys fell like rain" to keep the rhyme."BTW, the mp3 of the full ballad can be heard on the song page... just Google on the title:The Days the Earth Would Not Stand Still
Larry Holder Are you that old you experienced these things? Just kidding. Would it be so impossible to believe bells rang in both towns?

We may be in for it again, as the New Madrid zone is hit by earthquakes and hot spots recently. The early 1800's was a time of a solar minimum that affected the entire planet with droughts, crop failures, and starvation (think Irish potato blight). We are going through a solar minimum right now to rival the one in the 1800's..do you think the New Madrid will get hit..soon?
Dee Zimmo Everyone here might be interested in this historian’s take on the subject : th-cam.com/video/-8qNQXs2EwA/w-d-xo.html
Maybe it's not a fault like.. Maybe it's a chain of underground volcanoes
Brandon Garcia What a jackass , the dude in the white shirt
You talking about fault line?
Which would be a fault line of sorts. There is a chain of old extinct volcanoes all down the MS. With some of it more active through Arkansas. Even Jackson, Mississippi has an extinct volcano under it.
Maybe your brain is a buried turd.
The world was hijacked in 1811-1812... the comet impacts that triggered the earthquakes/floods/fires, made it pretty easy to decimate the remaining survivors
Its weird living in a small town with such a big reputation.

It was an estimate from first hand accounts, historical record and geological transformation. The time machine was helpful too.

New Madrid is a continental rip that began but stopped mid-rip.

And before the Earthquake event(s) they had a Solar Eclipse that passed right over the area plus the 'Great Comet' passed in the starry night. Guess what! We are repeating History (But with the 'Devil's Comet'). Could there possibly be a repeat of events?

I’m here before everybody comes from the news. it will happen soon.
I'm stoned lol
Brandon Garcia Everyone here might be interested in this historian’s take on the subject : th-cam.com/video/-8qNQXs2EwA/w-d-xo.html
