What a dream to find one with a metal shell case! I do not have that, but I am fortunate to have two Model 5’s with relatively good decals, S/N 360269 (1911) and S/N 1590029 (1922), implying over 1.2 million produced in 10 years! Also have a 14” Model 3 with good decals, S/N 3687706-14, which I believe is from around 1931. Cheers.
Brilliantly done! It’s very informative and beautifully shot and narrated. If your carriage feels hard to return, consider taking a few clicks off of the mainspring tension. I also wonder whether new springs might help shifting the carriage with less effort. Take care, Daniel
Thank you for your praise! As for the carriage, the heavy feel is something I've felt in several of these models. It could for all I know be that they are wound tight all of them of course, but it is after all a pretty dense contruction of steel and iron.
You've given us an excellent resource. I have found an Underwood 5 about the same fine condition as yours. I'd love to put it under such a hood or in that old Underwood box you show at the end. But considering how rare they apparently are, I think I'll have to make whatever I end up with. Where might I find ideas for a period appropriate box or cover?
The old shipping crates are pretty rare, yes. I stumbled across mine as an item sold at an antique store who had it covered with a table cloth and sold it as a "shabby-chique coffee table". It was originally a shipping crate for a 13-inch No 3, so it doesn't fully match the No 5, but obviously it does fit as it is larger than need be. The metal sheet boxes are more common than the shipping crates, but also not something you come across every day. Underwood kinda set a standard for what a professional typewriter looked like, so many other producers made machines that size. Therefore lid covers for other models might also work for the Underwood, but obviously there's not going to be a guarantee. Later era covers were made from plywood with veneer and could also work, but again: No guarantee. Note that quite often when I see a lid for sale online on for example eBay it is lacking the bottom plate which the lid would typically latch onto for secure transportation. In these cases the lid still covers the machine, but you need to lift the lid and put it away before you can move the machine. If you want to DIY either a lid or recreate the old shipping crate, feel free to ask and I'm sure I can supply some rudimentary measurements.
I am getting ready to do a (probably not very) quick clean and shine on a № 5 for a client and one of my own waiting in line. This will actually be the first № 5 I've worked on because mine keeps getting bumped by other machines
Thanks for another interesting annd informative video. Does the right shift key on that green portable sit lower than the left? I have the same green model and my shift keys are different heights.
God bedring!
Excellent Video, one of my favorite old typewriters
Beautiful video, very interesting facts. Keep it up !
Great summary! Learned a lot about a machine I thought I knew lots about already! Especially appreciated the 1/2 vs 3/4/5 comparison :)
Very nice video, thanks so much for creating it! I own a No. 3 with 12"carriage and a No 6 with 12" carriage. Love them both! One is elite one pica
Wow!
Well done!
Thank you! Coming from you that means a lot :) I'm a fan of your content!

I was very happy to find it in this condition for sure, thanks! Congrats on your finds as well!

It's a fairly simple machine to work on, so it can be a satisfying and interesting project! I wish you luck on yours :)

Thank you! I agree, it looks like it does in the video, but in reality both shift keys are aligned with the lower bank of keys, ie. the same height.
What a nice miss-click. Subscribed.

Lykke til på jakten! Den kommer jevnelig en opp på Finn, men det er klart at er man begrenset til et bestemt område så reduseres mulighetene litt. 🤞
