  • The reasons why Mike Krzyzewski became the winningest coach in college basketball history go far beyond the talent he recruited. Certainly, talent is required to go to championships. However, many seriously talented teams consistently underperform. According to 'Coach K,' the foundations of his team's successes at Duke and with Team USA have to do with a consistent and purposeful focus on values and developing a culture where talented people can thrive and reach their potential. In this session of 'Leadership Lessons from the Fast Lane,' Coach K discusses what it takes to build teams that succeed on the court and in life.
    In this session, they discuss:
    1. How our leadership abilities develop over time and are accelerated in difficult times.
    2. How a team's success depends on the purposeful development of a 'winning culture'- an environment where caring and honesty are the norms.
    3. Experienced leaders are being challenged to communicate differently. To be successful, leaders must constantly adapt to how people on the team access information.
    4. Leaders need to be able to have more candid conversations. Learning from experience is always the result of discomfort where our ideas are challenged, and our best efforts are expected.
    5. Every person on the team must adopt a 'next play mentality.' The future is created looking forward - spending far less time looking in the rearview mirror.
    6. The importance of surrounding yourself with good people! It's good for recruiting and even better for life.
