I have 2 shotguns and 3 rifles, just had to apply for a licence through the police and buy a gun safe for our home. Then a firearms officer comes to visit my home and approved my home to be safe. If you have no criminal record you're basically allowed to purchase any firearm. Also we had the IRA in our country to literally wage war against England and take the fight to them until a peace settlement was reached in 1998 to disarm the IRA so this might be why people assume Ireland is unarmed. I think it definitely goes both ways in that people from the UK think you can just walk into a walmart and buy a gun instantly, then people from the US think that the UK has a knife licence. Obviously we know that in the UK and ireland we can own firearms its just a few more hoops to jump through which in my opinion are sensible hoops (to an extent) but you definitely dont need a licence for a chefs knife
