Wasn't the idea that the other costume designers were trying to shame their contestants, but Cena empowered his contestants? ... well, either way that is what the actual designers ended up doing 🤣
@rosesirencosplays1258 no it wasn't? In the movie, Cinna said, "Tonight, we have the tribute parade. I'm gonna take you out and show you off to the world." Caesar makes a big deal about this was their first look at this year's tributes. In the books, district 1 is described as looking beatiful. Shame isn't part of the parade. it is just part of the show.
I think at this point the stylists just gave up giving creative and innovative designs to tributes that are less likely to win. Mentors in the 10th hunger games are worried on mentoring kids from poorer districts that are less likely to win, it could be implied to the stylists of the games. Imagine dressing up someone with your most powerful designs only for them to die in the first day of the games. Also, perhaps there were stylists like Tigris who didnt want to be a part of the games but forced to do it because they fear Snow and what he will do with them. They’re not putting their best effort to support a game that celebrates kids murdering each other.
@@Kunehosdays the Hunger Games is, essentially, a popularity contest. The designers want to make good designs (which is a matter of perspective, given the nature of Capitol fashion). If their tribute wins, they get very popular instantly. They get lots of attention for their work and they make a lot of money in a short period of time. Like Cinna did, which Effie mentioned before the Victory Tour started. The Tribute Parade makes good impressions, helps get sponsors, increases the likelihood of a tribute receiving a parachute, and increases their likelihood of surviving long enough to win. Yes, the tributes are little more than toys to them. Shaming them is a side effect of the thing, but not the intended effect. Quelling the notion that the Districts could fight back, culling the young or strong, granting glimpses of hope only to renew despair. THAT is the point. The only reason 12’s outfits are usually humiliating is that other stylists took the coal mining idea too literally and also had little faith in the ability of a tribute from a far outlying District to win. They probably saw it as an opportunity for experience until they were allowed to style for other Districts, or gained notoriety for their work out of Games season. Cinna told Katniss he wasn’t there to make her “look pretty.” He was there to help her “make an impression.” He was a stylist with a good understanding of his job description.
Honestly, I think those costumes reflect the way capitol people misunderstand commoners quite well. The thing is that every district has it's own designer with extremly individual style and "artistic" intentions (the thing about court jester could have actually been the idea behind) who wants to stand out more then accuratelly present the district. In a world where bright crazy mummery is equivalent of jeans and t-shirt, shapeless sacks can be the high fashion. And with combination of zero awareness of real life out there, thus misled stereotypes, most of those costumes actually work pretty decently, considering the budget given to costumes that can be only seen like a half of a second.
I feel like you're forgetting that Katniss specifically said that before Cinna, district 12 was usually dressed up in a poorly glamourised miner's uniform. Besides, I think there's a bit of a symbolism behind how tacky those costumes are. Like you said, they look like cheap halloween costumes, like throwaways, because it's not meant to last more than that one day - the district kids are expendable. It's meant to stand out and then be thrown away since the district kids won't come back to wear it
I definitely get where you're coming from but both the books and the movies made a point of the fact that Cinna was going far above and beyond. Part of what made him so remarkable from the beginning was that he actually did want to help the tributes he was assigned rather than just sticking to the status quo. Other designers never bothered to actually do anything new that would get their tributes more attention and therefore any advantage. And considering the canonical status quo options were "caricatures of workers from the District" or "basically not clothed" (Katniss was worried about wearing only coal dust because the Capital is even more twisted in the books) I'm really relieved they went this route rather than putting every actor over 18 in the skimpiest thing possible. 🤷♀️ But that being said I would have loved it if they'd used some of their insane budget to get fabrics that would look less cheap on camera. Or if they'd had the costumes fit better since they were supposed to be tailor-made for each Tribute.
I’m appreciative of you sharing your pain over these costumes with us. They looked so weird and interesting in the movie, but actually seeing them, well they still look weird, only now more tacky. I enjoyed this.
I always thought the costumes were cheap because the contestants were both expendable and just there for entertainment, like a court jester.. It's only once they become winners that they are shown respect, glory and been welcomed by the capital, and given the luxury of quality clothes. I think also that in later books/films its explained that there are only a couple of quality dressers like Sena. The rest are of poor and non reputable
Fair assessment. I just think of it like a beauty contest - this was a chance for the designers to show off their work. It was about them and not the contestants.
I compare these to the Olympic costumes. With real pride/focus/and a budget, MOST of them are horrendous. (Though the earliest book does not refer to the eventual fate of winners, it is still presumed that the movie costume designers read the books. Or did they? I expected them to be rather more 'body conscious'. Though the capital designers did not give a rap about the combatants, they did have to see the impact that such a visible forum would have on them, the capital designers, professionally. )
I see them as designers and the contestants their runway models. You wouldn’t sent something looking terrible out there on purpose when it reflects you
I feel like a lot of these issues are due to the movie's fashion designer, and limitations they had to deal with. Like, obviously some of these are gonna look a little tacky due to them trying to imitate material they didn't have or would've been too heavy. Also, all of these (aside from District 1 and 12) are original designs, as they weren't described in the book due to most of them being side characters that served no use to the plot. Still great to have a professional's take on this.
So, I agree with what you are saying (my costuming knowledge is limited to a lot of youtube videos, so you're the expert) but I think if you want to you can actually find a perspective from which it all makes sense. I last watched the movies over three years ago and read the books back when the movies came out so my memory is not perfect, but I think that at least in the books and possibly in the movies, too, a big issue was whether the costume designers actually cared about the tributes and that Catniss was super lucky to get (let me google the name real quick and fail) Cinna (?) because he cared about her and didn't just see it as a game or something and from that point of view it kinda makes sense that the other costumes are a bit over the top and don't really actually make sense. That still doesn't account for cheap materials but it does very much account for weird design choices and the costumes not really working that well with the districts. But do correct me if I'm wrong. I plan to reread the books soon-ish and now I'm ver curious as to how that was handled in the book.
This also explains why so much more was done in the next movie. In the second book Katniss mentioned how the designers added fire to so many of the costumes and how ridiculous it was. In the second movie the costume designers put a lot more effort into the designs to show how much they all cared for their victors. I'd be interested to see a breakdown of these chariot costumes by Kirilee.
District 8's tribute's are so ready for death at that point oh my gosh. Also, I know that in the film we hardly see these costumes. We see GLIMPSES, but to make a book that showcases them you would expect them to be a little better. These honestly look like they were made by creative high schoolers in a drama program who are new to sewing. So not bad per say, but not the level you expect from a huge film like the Hunger Games
To be fair to some of the designers, some districts are a lot harder than others. I mean, coming up with a piece of clothing with the prompt "fabric" doesn't really give you much direction lol. The repeated greco-roman inspiration is probably a feature though, not a bug. Capitolites having names like Caesar and Plutarch, or even Cato in 2, is probably meant to evoke that as well.
I can see this as a series on your channel how you would redesign and make said costume. I’ve thought the same thing about the costumes I’m glad I’m not alone in my thinking.
I don't think the chariot costumes are supposed to look like the Capitol- maybe the interview outfits, but the chariot costumes are supposed to be... costume-y. Not to say these are good costumes. But I don't think that them not looking like Capitol fashion is their problem.
I actually felt like the costumes were purposefully clownish? I recall from the books that it was quite on purpose because the designers were still trying to sort of shame the district tributes. Like, they don't *deserve* the same quality or serious collaborations (fashion speaking) as a Citizen Of The Capital. Also, don't the designers have like 4 DAYS to make up the actual costumes? They probably pre-planned some stuff, but until you know if you have a 12 year old or a 16 year old, you can't really MAKE it. So the costumes are purposefully clownish and also rushed. The designers are also still largely BIGOTS against the tributes, so they don't WANT them to be taken seriously. Cinna was the outstanding person because he went against the norm and took his tributes seriously, which made them really stand out and inspired people... which is exactly why President Snow takes notice of them at their presentation. I'm also thinking of Effie's outfit with the green ruffle neckline outfit when she starts crying talking to her tributes, it's VERY clownish, but high quality. So the clownish *but cheap* aspect of the tributes costume choices is less shocking. Rue's costume was made specifically to note her innocence and youth, with the childish puffy sleeves and the glimmery overall skirt. Cinna's costumes were still thematic though, they were literally burning pieces of coal. Nothing flowing or silly, no skirts. I like how you mention her having actual pants, she's a hunter and her costume is as serious as Cinna took her. I definitely can see how a professional like you will find every flaw, when you break it down most of them really are terrible!
To be fair, you can tell costuming is based on name and longer on film. The actors for districts 8-10 just were in the parade. The others were named or stunt double characters in the training and arena scenes. But I agree.., they needed proper details. What makes me sadder is the second movies’ are fantastic and we don’t see them anywhere really
The idea for the chariot ride was that the other costumes were generally bad, and Cinna and Portia (katniss and peeta's stylists) outshone every other stylists. True they look ridiculous, but as someone whos read the books, we view the world from katniss's point and she thinks capitol clothing and lifestyle is just disgusting. So i think they were supposed to look bad on purpose
Tbh I wonder why they decided to redesign district ones chariot costumes from being spray painted silver to instead their pink Feathers? (I mean i feel like both would look cheap? But like idk also I find it odd that like people say the designers make their outfits look intentionally bad? Cos in the books for example Glimmers interview outfit is specifically meant to draw attention to her (i belive katniss describes it as a nearly see through gold dress))
I actually read the books, and not watched the movies. I loved them so much and now I have to go back and read this scene because I think I remember it having more details about the districts. But I loved this and would love to see your redraws on these costumes: Just reread: and it don't tell you about any district except dist. 1 wich is spray paint silver and in a jewel cover tunic or something. And then they do make note that district 12 is always horrible because of the coal miners outfit and so they usually end up in skimpy outfits with lights on there heads. Except one year when they were naked and covered in oak dust, and Kat expected to be dress like that naked covered in dirt and all. It dose sound like they are making fun of the tributes in general. But if still love to see your take on these district related costumes.
Indeed. But that is the sexualisation of modelling to make the designer look good. I believe this idea that the designers see this as their big runway event was mossed
I clicked on this video so quickly because I instantly recognized the awful costumes because I HATED them when I watched the movie! (Also, has it really been nine years?! Holy crap...)
I feel like the parade costumes were intentionally bad. The outfits shouldn't look like Capitol fashion, as they are caricatures of worker's clothes or symbolic of an industry. In televised competitions like Eurovision, the costumes are also ridiculous to catch attention and don't match our daily fashion. Furthermore, every year there are three or more costumes that almost look the same in Eurovision, so that matches up with the metallic costumes all looking the same. From a directorial standpoint, it also breaks down the line up of costumes, so that you don't get overwhelmed by new colours and shapes every different shot. To us, the movie audience, the bad costumes signal that these poor kids are not honoured guests of the Capitol, but are being paraded as clowns in front of the real decent citizens of the Capitol (who are ironically clowns themselves). And I don't think the ruffled 'chef's' hat should get such a bad rep. Since the Capitol is very much inspired by ancient Rome, these kind of hats were the pinnacle of high fashion in late medieval and renaissance Europe, so they very much scream luxury to me. Ofcourse I can't be sure if the design of these costumes was intentional or not, as it is never explicitly stated by the costume designers, but comparing them to the rest of the movies' costumes, they stand out too much to not be intentional and from interviews the designers really sounded like they knew what they were doing. And yeah I wouldn't want to be seen in those district 8 costumes...
I have never watched the Hunger Games but those golden shoes/boots reminds me of a song in the Eurovision songcentest called 'Diggiloo diggiley' and that bolero remins me og Mickey and Minnie When you talk about 'Power' and their headpieces - I can't with that solar panels!!! This was hilarious!!!!
I think in some meta way having a roman look or aspiring roman looks sound plauseable. They are living in Panem (latin for bread) so there definitely is someinfluence lingering there. Also Collins said that she was inspired by gladiator games to write these books. The hunger games are practically gladiator shows only that the contestants aren't physically with the audience, always die and are untrained children. I could imagine the capitol children learning about the past in school (of course a twisted version) how panem rebuilt itself and the meaning behind it. Plutarch knows about it so there has to be some information. He knows what Panem means and also knows the expression Panem et Circensis. Idk, just a thought but maybe that could explain 2 and 4 with them being one of the most successfull districts i.e. having the better teams
I think the only one who liked his contestants was Cena. The rest were making them look like they thought they should, not playing to their strengths as he did.
Nine years? Wow. Time. Is. Weird. I am currently setting up my family gallery's fiber arts room, and I think we might have some variety of ideas that could have been helpful to that textile district.
Your video is very true. But I want to be optimistic and say maybe it's all on purpose. The costumes makers IN the movie want to mock and humiliate the participants and Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) is the only one who wants to make them look good.
Hmmm _ I had thought that bad, unimaginative costuming was deliberate. Doesn't Cina say that he wants to actually make Peta and Katniss stand out, as opposed to the 'same old same old' miner costumes?
I think the cringey nature of the costumes contributes to the world. They show the tone-deaf nature of the Capitol, and the Capitol's reductive attitude toward the people in the districts. They show an additional layer of torture on the tributes, being forced to wear floofy nonsense. The tributes can't even share their own thoughts by having input in to their costumes. It also shows that the stylists did not have a lot of time to sew fitted couture. Plus, the costumes had to look good in the chariot parade. So they have to be highly visible from a long distance, and had to look dynamic when the chariots were in motion to keep up the excitement of the event. If had were a stylist with a brief like that - those sacks with floofy details would be on the menu as they would clock from a distance, look good billowing in a breeze, and be easy to size.
If I remember correctly, the film designer had very little time and a very very small budget. They had to choose what they could spend the money on. I think I heard this in interview🤔
Hi, I have never seen these movies and from the description of some of the costumes, I don't think that I will make it a priority. Love to you all down under xxx
Tell us how you really feel, Kirilee 😁 It's been burning in your heart for 9 years. Would that make you the girl on fire? Your rant was spot on. They could have definitely put a bit more thought into those, but maybe they ran out of time and they weren't shown much anyways? Anyways, thanks for another fun one. Take care.
I would like to point out that the costumes you show for District 12 are not from the first movie but from the 2nd one. The first movie the costumes were orange and red like flames. Katniss's costume was a long dress.
Are they atrocious. Of course. But all throughout the books the capital and top 5 districts liken it to the olympics, and the bottom districts liken it to forced gladiator trials, and barbaric rituals. So the costumes are spot on in terms of representation from an over-romanticized "nostalgic tradition" for the futurecentric, removed from reality capital audience. Still ugly, but spot on. The real crime is that they had a huge budget and used party city costumes.
My headcanon is the tributes are cannon fodder, the casualties in the arena are exceeded only by battles like Stalingrad or any Pacific battle for the Japanese. No point in dressing them up fancy. After a tribute "wins" he/she can be given glad rags.
I'm a guy, a man's man if you will. I am a Combat Veteran who served in the 1St Infantry Division in Iraq. All that being said, I noticed the ridiculous costumes in the chariot scene. So thank you for making this video even if it were 9 years after the movie. I feel like our movies have dropped in quality. I think directors, producers of whoever is in charge of the movie industry have decided that CGI is more important than any other aspect of the film, including costume, set design, continuity, etc.
Thank you for your comment. It made me smile ^_^ needless to say, you are not the normal demographic I get on my channel so honestly, it was lovely to hear from you
These are my honest thoughts: (I'm not gonna talk about the production value or materials because I have no clue about that) District 1 - On theme, but super disappointing. Its clearly supposed to be luxury but it looks a complete mess. District 2 - I liked these but, idk if I'm being dense but, how is this masonry? District 3 - I liked the girl's outfit but the boy's was dull. District 4 - Yeah, it's alright, I quite like it. On theme. It's a little shapeless though. District 5 - Awful. It's boring, it's unflattering, and you have to reallyyyy stretch to make it make sense. District 6 - Yeah, I hate this one too. Same problems. I get its meant to be space travel but that concept is literally never brought up in the story. We see trains, jets, etc... but nothing gives the impression that Panem is invested in space travel. District 7 - I actually really liked this one. It's on theme and the the origami inspiration is super interesting. District 8 - Hate it. The worst costume. District 9 - Also really bad. Bland, too similar to 3 and 5, unflattering yet again, and nothing about it says 'grain'. District 10 - I get what they were going for but it just feels kinda out of place. Something's just a bit off. District 11 - Yeah, I like these ones, they're cute. District 12 - Amazing, obviously. (Also, I do know that in the book Katniss talks about tributes from 12 in the past getting awful costumes because they are a poor district that never win so no-one cares about making them look good. I assume is would extend to many of the other poorer districts too but, in that case, I feel like we would at least expect 1, 2, and 4 to look amazing.)
I truly believe they just wanted to save budget for the movie since most tributes are not relevant and were not going to be shown at the parade, so they went with the most cheap looking ensembles they could find.
The bad costumes for the chariots are straight from the book. They are described as weird and corny. They are NOT meant to be Capitol fashion. They are meant to reflect the industry of the district. Do you really think the designers for the film failed on this one scene? They got it right. The fictional Panem designers for the tributes failed. Cinna's work is meant to be above and beyond all of the others. You don't get it. As a movie viewer you are supposed to think these costumes are the worst.
I read the books before I watched the movie :) I do get it. There is a difference between corny and cheap imo. Cinema’s work is about the rest as he sees Katniss and Peeta are real people (as it is commented in the book). But the other districts would have at designers who would have done corny and over the top designs…. Not cheap which is what we got in the movie.
Wasn't the idea that the other costume designers were trying to shame their contestants, but Cena empowered his contestants? ... well, either way that is what the actual designers ended up doing 🤣

I definitely can see how a professional like you will find every flaw, when you break it down most of them really are terrible!
Interesting point
I am upset considering District 1 of Luxury goods had been described as "Glittered jewels, icy, cold, silver."
Yet we get animal fur and fuchia
Haha you’re not wrong
To be fair, you can tell costuming is based on name and longer on film. The actors for districts 8-10 just were in the parade. The others were named or stunt double characters in the training and arena scenes. But I agree.., they needed proper details.
What makes me sadder is the second movies’ are fantastic and we don’t see them anywhere really
True :)
Interesting. I have also read the books.
3, 5, 9, 10 she was amused i almost died of laughing.
Yay
Tbh I wonder why they decided to redesign district ones chariot costumes from being spray painted silver to instead their pink Feathers? (I mean i feel like both would look cheap? But like idk also I find it odd that like people say the designers make their outfits look intentionally bad? Cos in the books for example Glimmers interview outfit is specifically meant to draw attention to her (i belive katniss describes it as a nearly see through gold dress))
Yeh that was weird
I actually read the books, and not watched the movies. I loved them so much and now I have to go back and read this scene because I think I remember it having more details about the districts. But I loved this and would love to see your redraws on these costumes:
Just reread: and it don't tell you about any district except dist.
In the movie district 8 boy looked like he loved the parade and you can see him waving really big lmao
Hahaha
I clicked on this video so quickly because I instantly recognized the awful costumes because I HATED them when I watched the movie! (Also, has it really been nine years?! Holy crap...)
Hahaha I am glad to bring you the joy of pain again
Interesting
I have never watched the Hunger Games but those golden shoes/boots reminds me of a song in the Eurovision songcentest called 'Diggiloo diggiley' and that bolero remins me og Mickey and Minnie
When you talk about 'Power' and their headpieces - I can't with that solar panels!!!
This was hilarious!!!!
Hahaha yes! Eurovision! That’s a good analogy!
Indeed
I think the only one who liked his contestants was Cena. The rest were making them look like they thought they should, not playing to their strengths as he did.
Indeed - that is how the book has it
I love the movies, but I prefer the books.
Nine years? Wow. Time. Is. Weird. I am currently setting up my family gallery's fiber arts room, and I think we might have some variety of ideas that could have been helpful to that textile district.
Hahaha nice!
Your video is very true. But I want to be optimistic and say maybe it's all on purpose. The costumes makers IN the movie want to mock and humiliate the participants and Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) is the only one who wants to make them look good.
I disagree. They are designers, these were their models that were to partake in a massive runway
@@KirileeCosplay You are right, I wanted to find them an excuse 🙂
super interesting!
Glad you think so!
Hmmm _ I had thought that bad, unimaginative costuming was deliberate. Doesn't Cina say that he wants to actually make Peta and Katniss stand out, as opposed to the 'same old same old' miner costumes?
Interesting
Agreed
If I remember correctly, the film designer had very little time and a very very small budget. They had to choose what they could spend the money on. I think I heard this in interview🤔
That would make sense
Hi, I have never seen these movies and from the description of some of the costumes, I don't think that I will make it a priority. Love to you all down under xxx
They are honestly great movies. This is just me have a dig at one TINY part
Take care.
Hahaha thank you hun!
am i seriously the only one who loved the district 8 costumes? 😝🤣😂
Hahaha
I would like to point out that the costumes you show for District 12 are not from the first movie but from the 2nd one. The first movie the costumes were orange and red like flames. Katniss's costume was a long dress.
Okay
Dejavu of making paper snowflakes in primary school
Hahaha you’re not wrong!
sorry for commenting on such an old video, but i personally really enjoy district 4's outfits
All good! If you like it then you like it :)
6 was one of my faves.
Each to their own
I need to make that barrette you're wearing.
Go ahead
Are they atrocious. Of course. But all throughout the books the capital and top 5 districts liken it to the olympics, and the bottom districts liken it to forced gladiator trials, and barbaric rituals. So the costumes are spot on in terms of representation from an over-romanticized "nostalgic tradition" for the futurecentric, removed from reality capital audience. Still ugly, but spot on. The real crime is that they had a huge budget and used party city costumes.
I still think it could have been better
Okay can you do from catching fire now pt2
The costumes didn't really go into as much detail in catching fire I don't think
My headcanon is the tributes are cannon fodder, the casualties in the arena are exceeded only by battles like Stalingrad or any Pacific battle for the Japanese.
No point in dressing them up fancy. After a tribute "wins" he/she can be given glad rags.
Interesting idea!
The films got praised for its costume design and for a reason, but the chariot ones as you said were just a missed opportunity...
Indeed!
It made me smile ^_^ needless to say, you are not the normal demographic I get on my channel so honestly, it was lovely to hear from you
My bet is on district 8 like they’re so nice🤧
Cool
Yes, from a cosplay standpoint, they're awful. From the story context, they're brilliant because they were supposed to be like that!
I disagree with you. I have read the books and the designers see this as their big showcase.
These are my honest thoughts:
(I'm not gonna talk about the production value or materials because I have no clue about that)
District 1 - On theme, but super disappointing.
Cool thoughts
District 9 is more accurate to District 1, than District 1 was supposed to be based off the books
Interesting
I wish there was a Hunger Games series to correct some mistakes from the first movie
Alas, it is what it is
I truly believe they just wanted to save budget for the movie since most tributes are not relevant and were not going to be shown at the parade, so they went with the most cheap looking ensembles they could find.
Agreed
Had alot of thoughts and feeling my a**
You should really consider be a costume designer for a movie
Hahaha why thank you
Who gets the worst costumes?
The TEXTILE district😂😂😂
I know right?!
You need to read the new book she has on the background of Snow it's called: the song and ballad of songbirds
so well worth it and enlightening
Thanks
Your name is gorgeous.
Thanks
🤭
:)
I've made my own version s of the costumes for the parades so if u have insta I'll share them with u
That’s cool
