A bag of granulated chlorine every 100 feet in the affected section would suffice but A pipe that big I’d say every 20 feet just dump a bag before recharging
Depends on the system pumps, and/or the reservoir height while at rest (not pumping). We usually pumped up to 150psi. And to regulate the pressure into the city (outlet the reservoir) we used pressure reducing valves (Cla-val) at specific points throughout the system.

42" valves are a bitch to shut off especially if theres a bit of crap on the valve and can't get it to close properly turning it for ages And then the recharge don't wanna get water hanmer and blow it back up
At the beginning is a bitch to turn, then, still a bitch. Specially when tuberculation builds around inside the gate, then have to work it up and down several times, gaining only 1/8th of a turn at a time and is like 70 turns and it gets very hard at 55, not fun, not fun at all...
Don't believe a thing he said... The 12-inch water main outside my house broke, and it took the city crew 2 days to fix... the city crew didn't even have to build an access road ! Either the city crew is super slow, or this crew is super fast !
It depends on the circumstances. Sometimes the water can be impossible to shut down and line stops will have to be used. It could have been super deep; lots of service lines etc. There could be many reasons for this although I am in the business myself and to fix a standard watermain break usually takes an 8 hour work day from start to final paving.
If the Foreman ,was telling the Excavator Operator To bash the Pipe ! With the Bucket ! Why wasn't there ! A Concrete saw ! ? And Jack Hammer !? Surely a Crew ! That Large !! Would have had those ! THERE !!
Its easier, faster, and safer to just break that size of line throughout the portion you are going to replace and afterwards you can easily cut it evenly past the broken edges on both sides with saws.
@@davidwillard7334 you have an excavator? You've never used a 300 machine to break concrete or demo? And think that there's going to be damage done. You're funny.

Yeah they were too busy working. They wasn't worried about making a TikTok video on changing a huge pipe
Your were lucky to have an old-school boss like that, who knows how to take charge and get it done safely. It's a tall order. Well done.
36 hours that’s hard work and dedication. Respect ✊
Lesson learned : use ductile iron pipe material in the future for transmission main replacement projects!

Those motor-operated valves oughta get excecised now & then... It's only when machines DON'T work that we are reminded how powerful they are. 😂😢😢

That’s big papa he’s alright
If we emptied the water flow in the water main by using suitable valves which are well functioning it would be easy to do the repair.
You are exactly right, clean clothes office worker's getting some picture time in!
Multiple sluice valves not isolating reflects a poor maintenance/operation program i.e OPEX budget.
I hate those types of "look at me!" "I'm the daddy" with his capital D cess tanks.
I think these people need a comprehensive right of way matieance program..those trees on top your pipe is not helping you
