I've often wondered how painters determine the size of a given work's canvas, though I've never heard this mystery addressed. This was a fine program & Mr. Graham-Dixon & the curators' enthusiasm for the great works they're discussing is quite infectious. Makes me want to go out & create my own masterpiece; after all, it can't be that difficult, can it?
Andrew, that was wonderful, thank you. I love your presentation, but more than that, I LOVE the fantastic art that you ''discover''. I'm in art heaven. Cheers mate!
Really good to see Andrew here looking fresh and ready to educate haha :) , they've even painted the walls the same colour as my lounge , classy :) keep them coming!
Rubens was not in fact ‘the teacher’ of van Dyck. He worked as assistant in Rubens’s workshop but Rubens’s specialist assistants were not apprentices in the traditional manner but masters working in collaboration under the auspices of Rubens. A very important distinction (for Rubens did indeed have many students) and an unfortunate error from a co-chairman in Old Masters
I feel sure AGD knew that but ,as he was having to race through these pictures ( and did so with such graciousness to those he interviewed) I’m guessing that he chose to use that term than waste time explaining the situation (which any art historian knows).
So many wonderful paintings up for sale but , to me, Botticelli's painting is not as good as Da Vinci's or Durer's in its execution. Can't wait to see what they all reach in auction.
The couple of portraits attributed to Anthony Van Dyck are not painted by the same artists. The woman portrait it’s not a Van Dyck , the stile is different to the man. Her face and hands are not by the artist. To me is a surprise when so call experts don’t see the difference. On the trade we said is a different hand. It’s necessary to scan that picture before the sale, it looks like a copy of an original. Every artist has a flair a stile very characteristic impossible to re produce. The woman is not by A Van Dyck. Is like writing , everyone has a different stile, if you know about how to paint it’s very obvious the difference. Her hand is force not natural, AVD painted the hands very beautiful.
Botticelli's Christ looks like his Women in Primavera.. it has got the same expression via the shape of the mouth! I think he has done that deliberately.
Great idea to put Andrew Graham-Dixon , he is so passionate about art that is contagious. Great move Sothebys!

What a pleasure to see and learn about these paintings I would not otherwise have encountered.
The whole exhibition is marvelous! I loved hearing about the history behind the Artists and the expressions of each painting. Absolutely wonderful!

What a truly amazing man. Just received his terrific book, ''ART' for Christmas, and it has literally saved my A Level Art History

Sohlberg’s winter scene in Oslo is absolutely breathtaking.
I know you have to 'sell' these pictures, but even so these are excellent films. AGD is the perfect host.
Absolutely brilliant!!!!! Please do more
A wonderful collection of pictures. The Constable or the Four Seasons for me.
Wonderful more please
there's quite a bit of sotheby's content yet the view number is often less than my most popular video. I give these guys an A for effort.
my favourite art critic, I don't suppose I'm AG-D's only fan either, good on you, thanks.
THANK YOU!
Beautiful and very interesting.
Thought the “Salvador Mundi” has not been Authentically Proven to be by da Vinci ……it’s still questionable. Feedback please. .
I’ll have to think twice about buying it so.
"Do come, take a look... Oh, oh. Online I meant. You're too poor to actually step inside"😂
money, money, money the greatest old masters all together. Make your choice...
True
Hey come Andrew, you know perfectly well that Salvador Mundi is not a Leonardo.... bits of it yes but its not a Leonardo

The doyen of 21st century old masters broadcasting
Liked it a lot but can also see the scholarship and storytelling of AGD somewhat collide with the sales pitch of a auction house.
Sotheby's my favorite tax evasion business!

I agree, and it looks over cooked.

Good sales pitches. Not all of it true.
Good try.
