Warré's book makes no mention of "tens of millions of years" and them having endured "climatological and environmental changes". The doctrine "bees know best because they have evolved over millions of years" is a fairly recent one that Warré did not subscribe to. It is unfortunate that these words are put in the mouth of Warré.
Great demonstration Chris If possible don't use plywood ! I keep hearing the Warré hive being talked about as basically a "set it up and walk away" kind of thing. Does this philosophy extend to pest control? i.e. Do Warré purists eschew mite treatment or hive beetle control measures?
"Warre Purist" - well put. I believe the "purists" do avoid any and all measure. Speaking for myself though, I do not. I take whatever steps I can to eliminate the things that threaten my colonies - hence the screened bottom board.
Ugcheleuce (and anyone else) - while it was not my intention to put words into Warre's mouth, clearly I did just that in this video. The "10 Million years - Climate change" comment was solely mine, and I wrongly dovetailed it into Warre's belief. Rather than investing more time and resources to reshoot this video, I'm hoping that this can serve as a disclaimer for doing so.
The measurements in inches work just fine. I use 11 3/4 X 8 1/4 instead of 300mm X 210mm. the spacing is 1/2 inch and the widths of the bar is 1 inch. The I don't have to deal with 32nds and 16th and the inch measurements are so close that the bees are doing fine.
Truciolara - Thank you for your information. Anyone who has used the Warre for 45 years certainly has a great deal to offer and I am all ears! Our Queen ring that we developed for introducing the queen cage is now sold with a removable plug so that beekeepers can elect to offer the bees a second entrance higher up in the hive.
