Firstly, absolutely stellar cinematography. I played it twice just to soak in the views. Secondly, thank you for making me see my old Alto in a new light. It is truly a very capable vehicle.
My best memory of the Alto is when it crossed a water logged road outside our house without a hiccup when a Range Rover Evoque, for some reason, couldn't. I felt good seeing a Rangie getting stuck in its habitat. That's evil, yes, but just shows the sheer capability of the tiny Alto.

Yes. Among the 3 cars i drive, i love my 2016 Alto for city use over others. Never bothered to buy an automatic coz its got a super light clutch. Narrow body with good ground clearance i zip through the left most (mud roads) when get struck with crazy traffic jams in the city :)

      @santigris 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Absolutely! My uncle had once left his at our place since he was traveling to the US for six months, and just to keep it active, I reluctantly took it out the first time, to office (since I owned a Swift). And boy, within minutes I had a huge smile on my face! Its ability to squeeze into gaps, its light weight mated with a very peppy engine just won me over completely! And I came home realising that it may not be sporty, but for anything you want to do, it's a total sport!

    • @om5201
      @om5201 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@santigris Yeah. Its no way sporty. You need to revv the engine to make it pull the car fast. But yeah petrol engines are always fun to revv till max rpm. Only thing i hate in Alto is its poor breaking. I dont know about BS6 models with ABS...

on the left there is a Canal, on the right are the Farm Fields. We were heading towards Construction Site. that was awesome Drive.

The Alto 1.1litre gets an F10D, 1061cc, N.A petrol engine, same F-series engine as the 0.8L, 796cc (F8D) engine, and talking about the F series, those are very capable petrol engines and can handle extreme cold altitudes. The F10D also gets a 4cylinder making it a structurally stable engine.

This car has an emotional attachment to the family & It's undoubtedly a GOAT as you beautifully described in the video. 1st generation models of this car are rarely found on roads these days. I would have been more overjoyed if you used the same model that was used in the rally for this video but still, it turned out to be an amazing video with those splendid shots, would love to see more content like this!

    That last line is epic.
Just let me quote sirish chandran
"We have not only forgotten where we have come from, worse we have forgotten the cars we have grew up are actually capable of.
For years we have caught of in this rat race to get out hands on even more outrageous and even more in you face cars, forgetting that cars like humble little alto can do everything and then some more".
    This is an epic quote.
    And really changed my mind
I was always thinking of changing my k10 to bigger cars. While I have modified it with love with alloys, wider tyres, audio system and damping. Also it is optional model with airbags.
This statement of sirish sir just make me retain my 80k kms run k10 which runs like new as my second car and not sell it

Sirish, your grandkids are going to have a whale of a time. Man, the way you retrace your path back into memories is fantabulous. We have an Alto K10 at home and I can attest to every attribute that you have covered in this video. It is indeed the mountain goat and also the most agile set of 4 wheels after the legendary Tata Sumo for almost all kinds of terrain. This is our own improvised and desi version of an All Terrain Vehicle. No wonder why Alto still continues to be the hot favorite of commercial drivers in Himalayas. Also, about time your editor gets a good raise. The Alcazar one and this Alto one, both the videos are top notch stuff.

Alto is not just a car, its an emotion. I own one from 2016 ( a K10 ) boy oh boy that car is a rocket just bury your foot and you are off in the wind! Not big in terms of numbers ( 67bhp) but due to its size and wieght it has no problems! And the car is abuse friendly,. I just learnt driving in 2020 and i dont get the car much because i am 17, but when i do, i become a maniac, that car just pulls, i literally abuse the engine like hell revving it going 120kmph in 3rd gear ( ik thats not safe and harms the car) but it just gives you the kick in the pants feel! although there is no confidence while driving when you go above 80 but the feeling is lovely. thank you evo India for this episode!

Once I had been there in Manali with my friends.. nd it was in December.. heavy snow fall.. roads were filled with thick snow.. we had to travel around 15 kms to catch our bus to delhi nd kind of clueless situation.. fortunately a taxiwala came into the picture with his alto 800.. he introduced him as bada bhai from mandi.. nd that journey of 15 kms was such a memorable (horrible at the same time 😄) experience for us.. he was drifting his tiny alto like a pro.. drifting from one side of the road (rocks) to the other end (river)... Sometimes we thought, it would be our last journey..😂 but he took us to the bus station safely nd we were able to catch the bus.. otherwise we would stuck in manali in midst of the snow in that night.. Thanks to Bada bhai and his super powered alto for saving us and for that memorable journey.. 🥰❤️

Alto is such a versatile car. In 120 kmph, crossing a barricade in a Alto is super easy. Other cars will obviously slow down to cross it. But Alto does it with ease.

As a former Alto owner, I know the capabilities of this car. And to be honest it is any day better than these Psuedo SUVs in challenging areas as I experience this. My Alto never stuck. And one time when its left wheel is in a deep pothole I lifted it on myself it so light. It was Fun. Nothing like a Simple car. They age better and last forever. Not saying that modern cars are bad but G.O.A.T is G.O.A.T.

The Alto: I was a school kid when it was launched. An old friend of mine had a green one. I wanted one, but my family couldn't afford one. We finally bought a car, but that wasn't an alto. I grew up got married and surprise, my wife's family had one. The decade old girl was sparingly used. And I became the primary user. The maruti impressed me with its reliability and versatility. In a way it reminded me of my own humble origins.
As for Mr. Sirish Chandran.. I was a young boy from a small town in Kerala who used to save up enough money to buy auto magazines. What caught my attention was this young bespectacled guy who gave detailed reviews with clarity. As I matured over the years so did Mr. Sirish. He covered events both in India and abroad. He drove the fastest and the most expensive vehicles. And now when that same journo reviews the humble Alto atop the mighty Himalayas, and myself is typing in theses words into a video streaming handheld computer, I reflect upon the past, of much much different times, how the past two decades have gone by, and where we are today.
Thank you Sirish. Thank you EVO.

Plain people will analyse and over analyse why the mountain people like alto but the simple reason is that it's cheap, small, spare parts are easily available and cheap, roadside mechanics can easily repair it. One more thing, NCAP is irrelevant in the mountain twisties, there are no head on collision in the slow roads and when a car roll for 500 meters on the cliffs of the Himalayas, even a 50 star NCAP rating won't save you. The very few people who survive these are those who didn't wear seatbelts and flew out of a rolling car.

I liked this very much. I can really see the joy and emergence of nostalgia in your face.
We had an Alto. The standard version (without AC) bdw. In those days especially in our areas of NE, AC was not essential at all. You feel hot temperature, just open the glass and face the breeze.
But the thing is, I miss the old look of the Alto. I personally feel the front look of current Alto is unattractive. If they bring the look of old Alto (especially the K10 one), I may consider it as our second car in the garage.

  • @fancyyahoo

I learnt to drive with my grandparents' 2003 Tata Indigo LS and 2001 Maruti Alto LXi. I kept wanting to go for the Alto because its engine was really responsive and that made it fun to drive. Plus the size and light weight makes it very easy to steer and navigate in cramped locations. This video made me emotional, and it reminded me of the car being very close to my heart. I would kill for a 120 hp version of the Alto, if Maruti would make one.

few points in my mind before watching the video
    1. It's more stable than a two wheeler
    2. Small in size, so good for narrow roads
    3. Has small wheelbase which makes up for ground clearance in rough areas
    4. Has a roof and AC which is better for the harsh climate instead of a bike
    5. Most importantly, runs at a cost of a bike and provide all the extras mentioned above
    6. Lastly the tried and tested engine and parts availability in even the farthest corners
and all these while being CHEAP

Always wondered why there were so many altos in the Nilgiri hills while i drove around my 4x2 suv from the city over there. My aunt lives in the hills and she still has her early 2000s Maruti omni and now an automatic ritz....Almost everyhome has a small Maruti car with altos topping the list... indeed Maruti's are everywhere remote.. ..i guess altos are mountain goats.....what an apt title...
