I worked for a “family” when I was right out of college. The mafia or Cosa Nostra isn’t gone, for sure. The organization is more technologically advanced and has a lot more legitimate business involvement, now. You still don’t want to cross them. If you’re loyal and know how to be discreet, they treat you really well. They’re good to their families and communities. I worked in a legitimate business, but saw a lot of things. You have no worries if you don’t cross them. The mafia gets a bad reputation for being ruthless, but they’re philosophy is, “If you do business with us, you know what you’re getting into.”

A tidbit while I am here "how did the mafia start?" sicily being midway between the continents for hundreds of years would get taken over by massive armies conquering back and forth for centuries so those living there had brotherhoods and families and clans. They lived on pretty much a historical stepping stone. When it came to drugs and olive oil they ALREADY had a secret society culture in place for hundreds of years.

Long story short, I loved in Howard beach during the late 70's till late 90's, so these 'Mafia' fellas were all we had to protect the neighborhood. To you, they're criminals, to US, they're local heroes. The stuff they did, YEAH, truly gruesome. But, back then, they were OUR neighborhood superheroes.... You pick and choose to protect your family and loved ones. Also, dating a mafia girl was the best thing possible... You were good to go, as long as YOU knew your place...

The Sicilian Mafia has origins FAR older and more honorable than expressed here. Sicily has historically known a near constant and highly diverse amount of brutal foreign occupation and oppression beginning LONG before (and later BY) Rome existed as either a republic OR empire. The Mafia existed to protect and perform the kind of functions a government normally would. They WERE generally quite honorable. That hard learned distrust for government that was so necessary to survive is the heart of their modern corruption and success and it's why it became so successful in Italian American enclaves in the United States and its why getting rid of them in Sicily and mainland Italy has been so difficult.
If you don't understand how and why it began you'll never really be able to understand the horror and tragedy of what they've become. Worse, without understanding the why and how of the matter you'll NEVER be able to ensure it doesn't happen again.

That makes sense, when the government and the military can't be reliably trusted or chooses to ignore the demands of the common person, they'll rely on anyone to fill the roles abandoned by the state even if those people aren't exactly friendly.
